Going on holiday tomorrow and I have covid ...

navyplaint · 24/10/2023 07:36

Pretty much that
Going to Lanzarote tomorrow and woke up Sunday with sore throat.
Anyway yesterday I had a lots of phlegm and felt like I had a head cold.
Had a test lying around and it was a strong positive.
I've never had covid before but at the minute it feels like a cold.
No temperature and I haven't lost my appetite /don't feel sick or anything just feel like I have a head cold.
I feel guilty having to get on a plane with covid but if I don't go it's a £3000 holiday
I am okay now to go abroad with covid aren't I?

Oh Dear!

As others have said, there is no longer anything illegal about going out and about when you have Covid, if you are not feeling ill enough to e.g. stay off work. No requirement to test either. The view from the powers that be, is that now folks are vaccinated, Covid needs to just be allowed to go through the population.

My OH and I both had Covid in March this year. I barely had any symptoms at all. Was a bit tired for a couple of days ( explained away initially, by having travelled down South for a funeral and hadn't slept for 2 nights properly) had a runny nose followed by a stuffy nose for around 24 hours - (I have allergies) -and that was it. My OH had what we thought was a head cold ( and they always go into his sinuses and take a week or 2 to clear). We went about our business as normal before we knew. Only tested because a friend we had been to the funeral with, in a car, tested and was positive. Both strongly positive and I tested Positive for 10 days, in spite of feeling completely well after 2/3!! We did stay home, after we discovered we had it, but we are retired, so could do that.

That doesn't mean that some folks aren't more vulnerable than others, nor that some people won't be much sicker than others if they do get it. There are plenty of other viruses in a similar category - Influenza being one of them. I'm telling you this, because it is a guarantee that there will be lots of people out there with it, who have no idea that they have!

The only things I would say are

  1. If you feel worse tomorrow, you might want to cancel in case you are one of the unlucky ones who continues to get worse and it's no fun not having access to your own bed

  2. Your family members might catch it, and also be much more unwell than you, while away. Someone in the family might be too unwell to travel home on the booked day. So, have you got decent travel Insurance?

I don't envy you, your dilemma to be honest, but I'm not going to tell you to stay home and lose your holiday. You just need to weigh up the risks for yourself and your family. I don't think you are being selfish to others if you go, because as I already said, loads of people will probably be on the plane, who have it and don't know and catching a virus - any virus- is a constant hazard with airflights

itsallfunand · 24/10/2023 09:26

Don't be so ridiculous 🙄

Not ridiculous...someone else who responded acknowledged that there are bugs etc and the likelihood of catching something is high. COVID can be brutal. But since you're one of these people who are confident you'll never catch it good for you.

@allsfairin

"How will you sleep for the rest of your life not knowing who you infected and whether they lived or died?"

You can put that on a person. It is the responsibility of the individual to risk assess but other people. It is not illegal to get on a plane with covid and therefore if an individual feels at risk/vulnerable then they should avoid it.

can't not* can

FrenchandSaunders · 24/10/2023 10:37

I can't believe we're over 3.5 years on from the start of this and all this nonsense still prevails.

Youthinkyoureuniqueyourejustastatistic · 24/10/2023 10:40

Whilst I am still cautious at avoiding covid, I understand the mitigation of it has changed.
There is no rule to self isolate either here or in Spain.

I would wear a well fitting FFP3 mask like an 3M Aura for the whole time on the aeroplane and in queues in the airport. Forgoing any meals and snacks. Mainly as to not ruin someone else’s holiday or give it to someone else who is immunocompromised and likely away from home.

I’d check I have a plan in place of it did get bad as a backup.

Like everyone says, I’d assume any indoor unmasked venue is likely to be covid positive people these days and that’s a choice everyone takes when they go.

But there will be people on that plane who don't know they are vulnerable- the Op will be exposing hundreds of people to it- some of them will definitely get ill, and some will get seriously ill.

We are talking about covid, not flu

BiggerBoat1 · 24/10/2023 10:43

Of course you can go as long as you feel well enough. You'd go if you had a cold. Enjoy your holiday.

It's mind blowing isn't it. I've not met a person in real life who like this but Mumsnet is full of them. I've read something on here today that if op gets on the plane then she is responsible for a persons death 🤯🤯

because they could well be, from an action done knowingly,

Covid is still killing dozens of people a week, and leaving many more disabled

Beaverbridge · 24/10/2023 10:47

I'd go but obvs mask up. Folk roaming about all over with it now.

3catsandcounting · 24/10/2023 10:50

Twiglets1 · 24/10/2023 08:33

I think the point at which people were told they had to go into work even if testing positive for Covid, that was the point at which many decided they would just get on with their lives with or without Covid.

When I worked in a school we were told to come in if feeling well enough, even if we tested positive. Sure, we could pass it in to vulnerable students or those who had medically vulnerable parents/grandparents. But the rules have changed.

This!

We're absolutely expected to go into school whilst infected, as long we feel ok, and yet I have friends in small and large companies who are told to stay at home for 5 days or until they get a negative test.

welshweasel · 24/10/2023 10:54

Of course you should go. Wear a mask if it assuages your guilt. When NHS workers are going to work as normal when they have Covid, with no requirement to wear a mask, we have to accept that times have changed. Your mistake was testing at all!

Hope you have a fabulous holiday.

MrsJPinkman · 24/10/2023 10:56

You know you shouldn't morally but there are no laws in place to tell you not do so.

Comedycook · 24/10/2023 10:58

If someone is vulnerable enough, many viruses and illnesses could kill them. It's not really practical to stay in all the time and some things are contagious before you have symptoms so you wouldn't even know. I wouldn't lose my holiday in these circumstances....there's a good chance someone else on the plane could have covid anyway!

Mariposista · 24/10/2023 10:59

OP the only thing you redact for is posting this on this forum - gently said, you know what types of reaction you would get.
Enjoy your holiday! Go and get some sun and feel better soon!

FrenchandSaunders · 24/10/2023 11:01

@itsallfunand exactly, nobody I know in real life even mentions the word covid.

Silvers11 · 24/10/2023 11:04

@allsfairin You said

So it's ok to get in a plane with Influenza? That's what your last statement implies 🙄

Influenza kills many people too every year - especially the elderly, but not exclusively so. Yes, Covid still appears to be more deadly than Influenza, now that people are vaccinated, but Influenza still kills thousands every year

WeAreWarriors · 24/10/2023 11:08

I went to a nativity play with covid! This was at the height of covid, I had tested as felt unwell, got a negative, wore a mask and later tested again which was positive. Cold symptoms, nothing more.

But, I wore a mask. No one got it (I fessed up on the WhatsApp).

So go, wear a mask and have a good time.

mummymayhem18 · 24/10/2023 11:10

It's all iii, me me me. It doesn't matter what is currently the law or not it's about being a decent person. You might be fine with it but another person could die from it. I'm a high risk person so if I was to get it this could be me ending up in hospital,I've just had my booster the other day. It's bloody selfish and irresponsible. What if someone in your family caught it from someone and they ended up very ill or died. I'm sure you would change your tune then. And I don't know what cheap insurance you bought but I bought holiday insurance twice over the last couple of months for my daughter and Covid cover was standard. And so were a lot of the other quotes from other companies.
