Going on holiday tomorrow and I have covid ...

navyplaint · 24/10/2023 07:36

Pretty much that
Going to Lanzarote tomorrow and woke up Sunday with sore throat.
Anyway yesterday I had a lots of phlegm and felt like I had a head cold.
Had a test lying around and it was a strong positive.
I've never had covid before but at the minute it feels like a cold.
No temperature and I haven't lost my appetite /don't feel sick or anything just feel like I have a head cold.
I feel guilty having to get on a plane with covid but if I don't go it's a £3000 holiday
I am okay now to go abroad with covid aren't I?

There are people with Covid everywhere and we are all coming into contact with it all the time. That's the reality.

Bellabelloo · 25/10/2023 22:59

@ttcat37 So are you isolating? If not you are probably in contact with multiple people a day who have Covid - with or without symptoms. I know you don't think you're overreacting, but the level of anxiety you are displaying on this thread is worrying. I have more than a handful of friends who are pregnant at the moment and not one has displayed any concern about getting Covid. We've been to restaurants, cinemas, birthday parties, on public transport etc. One of them had Covid a couple of weeks ago and never once mentioned it being of serious concern. You seem to be stuck in 2020.

I’m not isolating, because thankfully no, I’m not in contact with multiple people a day with covid.

This ongoing theme of “I’m concerned for your anxiety!” Well, I’m not- I’m astounded at the selfishness of people on mumsnet. Nobody I know would go out knowingly with covid. Covid is banned in our workplace. My friends, family and colleagues stay away from others when they’re poorly- this includes coughs and colds etc. It’s not a new thing, this is normal behaviour as far as I’m concerned, and probably why I’m so astounded that people would leave the house with covid?! It’s outrageous honestly! So selfish that people are willing to put themselves and their own wishes above others’ health.

Overthebow · 25/10/2023 23:23

Covid is banned in our workplace

😂An airborne virus is banned. What about people who haven’t tested, either because they only have very mild symptoms or simply don’t want to, or who have tested but they aren’t effective? What about those who are asymptomatic so wouldn’t have tested anyway? How do you ban a virus?

Yes, you can't exactly ban a virus... they pay no heed to the rules!
I'm off on holiday on Saturday. I got ill a couple of days ago: raw throat, headache... it's very reminiscent of the COVID I had last year, but without the upset stomach. I have no tests at home (except 3 year old ones that I wouldn't trust!) and I'm not feeling too bad, so off on holiday I'm going.
I think this is the case for most people these days... you don't test and make a judgement depending on how you're feeling.

Gcsunnyside23 · 26/10/2023 00:13

Why can't you go? As long as you feel well enough go ahead. If you hadn't done the test would you question going as in are you well enough and if the answer is yes then there you go

Topseyt123 · 26/10/2023 02:22

Covid is banned in our workplace. 🤣🤣🤣

You can't ban a virus, that's such a ridiculous comment. The little buggers really won't listen. Do you pick them up and propel them out of the door and onto the street shouting "begone with you" after them?

Plenty of people are asymptomatic with Covid, and with other viruses too. So they wouldn't even know that they were carrying things. Do you perhaps have decontamination lamps at each entrance to the building like in science fiction movies? I can't think of anything else that would work other than banning people themselves.

Maybe they work in a scotch egg factory Grin

Eeeeeh the shit this government come out with during the pandemic. Imagine the history books of the future discussing how you could have a pint but only if it was accompanied by at least a scotch egg? Mad time.

Lastchancechica · 26/10/2023 04:52

If one more person calls covid a cold… grrrr.

It lasts for over three weeks not 3 days! Some people die from it, do you know anyone that died from a cold?

Covid kills, and has killed millions of people! Real covid can make anyone seriously ill.

Stop minimising and living in denial.
Yes we must live normally 100%, but we do so considerately. You don’t get to write off millions of deaths and ignore them as if they don’t matter. It’s deeply offensive.

We are all learning to live with a disease that can kill us or a loved one. I can see how people manage this in different ways, but denial is not a healthy response either.

I fully understand why a pregnant woman might feel incredibly vulnerable given the sheer number that have been hospitalised and died.

tuvamoodyson · 26/10/2023 07:09

So, you’ve got Covid and you’re going on holiday….what was your question?

PurpleFlower1983 · 26/10/2023 07:13

Loads of people have it at the moment but are not testing. There will be others on the plane with it. It depends how you feel but with head cold symptoms nothing is stopping you going. I would wear a mask on the plane though.

NewUsernameJT · 26/10/2023 07:19

Enjoy your holiday op. Fwiw i would have done the same 🏖️☀️

PurpleFlower1983 · 26/10/2023 07:20

Sorry just seen you’re already there! Have a great time! We go on Saturday and have had colds all week! Hoping some sun will sort it out!

Universalsnail · 26/10/2023 07:35

I don't know why people are still testing.

I see this all the time, people with cold symptoms testing then getting a positive and then debating whether they can or can't do something.

In your situation there's no way I would have tested unless I was so ill I was stuck in bed and having to cancel anyway, because now you know for sure you have a complete moral dilemma. You can't really get on a plane with covid, just like you couldn't travel on a plane if your kid got chicken pox or something. So I don't think really you can go.

But I know I sure couldn't just loose 3k like that. There is no way I would have taken a covid test in this situation if I otherwise felt well enough to travel be it a bit under the weather.

counter - I don’t know anyone ANYONE personal or professional who has been otherwise healthy and not had cold and flu style symptoms for a few days.

if you’re vulnerable or generally ‘sicky’ people then yes I’m sure it can be worse.

news flash, in 2019 the very old, vulnerable and ill people all died of things we used to just call a Cold.

BeavisMcTavish · 26/10/2023 07:43

I’d also love to know what your ‘real’ covid is - having had it 3 times I know of when I was an avid tester in 2020/22 when we didn’t know much about it - I’m not sure if I had the fake one that only lasts a few days 🙄

EasternStandard · 26/10/2023 07:45

Enjoy your holiday op. Let us know if you get through it without feeling worse at any point

FrenchandSaunders · 26/10/2023 07:57

When you say millions, do you mean worldwide.

as far as the Uk is concerned:

Just under 227,000 people died in the UK with Covid-19 listed as one of the causes on their death certificate. This includes those who had not been tested for the virus prior to their death.

Flopsythebunny · 26/10/2023 08:03

2023shady · 24/10/2023 18:05

@Flopsythebunny will they not give you your boosters? I'm permanently neutropenic and had mine with no questions (0.3 last bloods)

No, they said I wasn't well enough.

Flopsythebunny · 26/10/2023 08:17

lemmein · 24/10/2023 14:26

The cev have just been forgotten about it seems

Oh behave! The economy and NHS has been wrecked because of restrictions. People were unable to leave their homes for the best part of 2 years to protect the cev. Children's education was massively disrupted - some died in abusive homes due to lockdown for a virus unlikely to affect them.

People need to stop calling others selfish for living their lives; if you're vulnerable take precautions to protect your own health - the country cannot afford to keep locking positive people away for mild cold symptoms!

None of it was done to protect the CEV. Where did you get that from? The cev protected themselves by shielding.
All we ask is that you realise that you have a transmitable disease that can be fatal to some and leave others with life changing disabilities and act appropriately

navyplaint · 26/10/2023 08:54

@EasternStandard Thankyou -feel absolutely fine this morning
No symptoms at all
The nose has cleared up
Fingers crossed no other symptoms appear

This! There seems to be a tiny handful of people here who know SO many people who died or were seriously effected by covid. I know none. I had an elderly relative with end-of-life cancer and covid was put on the death certificate. Conversely I had 2 elderly and very frail relatives in care homes who got it and were absolutely fine. The government used scare policies and these have continued to scare some - the very few - but some. There have always been illnesses that can have serious effects on certain people. We can't live our lives based on the stats from 2020. It was obviously tragic that people died, but it was a very small amount.

The stress you feel about this will be doing you more harm. You are in contact with people with Covid if you go out and about - go to the shops, go on public transport, go to work..

Of course people are leaving the house with Covid!

It does not last for 3 weeks for everyone. Some people are asymptomatic (wandering around with it!). Some have mild symptoms for a few days (maybe not even as bad as a cold). Some may be ill for a few weeks. Some sadly develop long Covid (though this can be true for many viruses - post viral fatigue can last for months).

We are not ‘learning to live with a disease that can kills is. We are living with another virus which has different affects on people. Much like many die from the flu. It is lumped in with that category now. You should be no more scared of Covid than you are of flu.

To be fair - flu worries me far more. I was ill for months after flu. Covid I felt a bit fatigued for a week or so. And yes I am one of those people who have had worse colds. I’ve had nasty chest infections that took weeks to shift. Much worse than Covid. For me.

TheThingIsYeah · 26/10/2023 09:50

@navyplaint

Glad you went and arrived safely.

I don't for a minute believe that the "Don't Go!" crowd on here would have actually practised what they preached. Would anyone really be prepared to wave goodbye to 3 grand? C'mon be honest.

During peak covid I had friends and family who were really hectoring. "Wear masks!", "Don't go out!", "Stay 2 metres apart!" - the usual mantra, yet the minute travel restrictions were lifted they were straight on a plane to Spain. When I picked them up on their hypocrisy the message was, ah, but "we" do it responsibly, it's everyone else that must follow the guidelines. They all got covid multiple times anyway.

I agree I can’t relate to that post.

I know Covid is circulating and those who still suffer over people going out are likely mixing with positive cases all the time.
