Pretty much that
Going to Lanzarote tomorrow and woke up Sunday with sore throat.
Anyway yesterday I had a lots of phlegm and felt like I had a head cold.
Had a test lying around and it was a strong positive.
I've never had covid before but at the minute it feels like a cold.
No temperature and I haven't lost my appetite /don't feel sick or anything just feel like I have a head cold.
I feel guilty having to get on a plane with covid but if I don't go it's a £3000 holiday
I am okay now to go abroad with covid aren't I?

Exactly. Everyone I know who’s had it since schools have gone back have been really unwell. People with no health issues etc. People have been off work for 3+ weeks.

There is no point in even trying to educate them, they are entrenched in their Cold War mentality, ‘all is fine it’s just a cold’. That is not the reality with this particular strain. At all.

Now wait for the screams of protest when I say of our cohort of healthy young friends - 35% of us needed to go to hospital with it, due to oxygen levels, extremely high heart rate and chest pain. Two for blood vessels bursting in their eyes due to brain inflammation.

It makes me so angry to listen to the denial brigade - whom are equally as bad as those calling for a lockdown every other minute. It’s ridiculously polarised thinking, born from fear I imagine.

Covid has killed millions, it will go on to kill millions more this winter. That is a fact.

I work in a very large office and have a normal sized group of friends and family, thanks. All people with kids who manage not to bring their colds into work/ to social events.
It’s not my fault that you and your people don’t give a shit about one another.

You're truly delusional if you think that's true.

I can see you’re getting angry but so many times I’ve seen this just you wait posting. Throughout the pandemic

Whereabouts are you? It may well have spread considerably given how much we are just living normally.

There’s no denial. If you would stick to facts and not anecdotal evidence that would be great.

The denial comes from people like you who simply can’t accept that Covid will circulate every year, just like flu and other nasty viruses. That’s how we are viewing it now. Some people get very ill with flu. Some people develop complications with colds. There are many nasty viruses going round. Best think we can do is be healthy, eat well and focus on having a strong immune system.

Covid isn’t special any more. Despite a few of you insisting it is..

Who is ‘we’? You do know there are official estimates for asymptomatic cases based on actual government data versus your family?

‘We’ is a large office of people each with their own families and social circles. Great for ‘official estimates’, but I’m talking based on my experience of thousands of tests taken over the years.

Right. As another poster said - delusional.

There are official stats on this - look them up if you want.

I don’t ‘think’ it’s true. It’s my life and I’m telling you that when one of my friends of family has a cold they say “we’ve got stinking colds so won’t be out for lunch, see you next week instead”, or colleagues call in sick or work from home if they’re able to.

Resorting to insults when you can’t argue back?!

I am a medical professional with more than 10 years experience in appraising literature. I separated from my then toddlers and worked front line on intensive care units and Covid wards for the first lockdown in March 2020. I saw first hand the effects of the virus. I have also seen the difference the vaccine has made. I have a parent who is immunosuppressed and have full insight on the need for the vulnerable to protect themselves.

Your uneducated opinion based on your tiny sample size of your social circle is meaningless in comparison

If that is actually true and you are not just cleaning the toilets on a ward somewhere. You would know of the thousands of healthy people being admitted into hospital with this strain. You would know this strain is causing real concern amongst scientists world wide due to its mutations. You would know that there is deep concern that it may evade some vaccines.

It just doesn’t stack up what you are saying. Someone that sees young, healthy pregnant women die from covid would never ever ever describe this horror as just a ‘cold’

You over egged it, not remotely credible.

New COVID Strain May Evade Vaccines, Alarming Health Officials

A new strain of COVID-19 that was only identified a week ago in the U.S. has prompted the CDC to take the rare step of issuing a formal message that it could evade vaccines or the protection of natural immunity.

What is amusing is that you think you are party to all these thousands of tests that your friends and colleagues have done. That every time they have taken a test (apparently multiple tests every week!) that they report them back to you…

Once again throwing around accusations. Look back through my comments - not once have I described Covid as a cold. I am just stating that your tiny sample does not represent the world population and that your interpretation of statistics is deeply flawed.

I am fully aware of the concerns, especially for those who are immunocompromised which is why my parent currently limits all social contact, especially as the weather is getting colder.

It is not worth arguing with anyone that resorts to insults when they disagree with something.

It isn’t possible that your office plus families are an anomaly

It really isn’t. In a way it doesn’t matter that you have comfort in your view. But at the same time it’s illogical and you are being exposed to Covid, you just think it’s not happening

I am sorry to break it to you - covid is ‘special’ for all of the wrong reasons.

If you can’t deal with the bald facts and reality - then may I suggest professional help? Living in some kind of delusion that we are out of the woods, covid is a cold and it’s all over is very worrying. It’s simply not true.

Yes… like many workplaces we had to test multiple times per week as a requirement. If someone wasn’t at work we’d all be told if they had covid so we could self isolate if we’d been in close proximity to them. It’s not rocket science

I hate to break it to you but most people had their last vaccines quite some time ago. You won’t be getting much protection unless you get a booster every 6 months..

However, what has changed between now and 2020? Covid is not a novel virus that can rip through the population the same way. We have a combination of vaccine immunity and a bit of innate immunity in the population. Some people will still suffer a nasty illness but many won’t.

I for one am more worried about flu this year. Lockdowns didn’t help with immunity for that. And obviously we saw some nasty RSV cases in children and babies. Most people are disproportionately scared of Covid..

2023shady · 26/10/2023 10:59

I don't get why people get worked up about being stuck in 2020 and laughing at people who are "hiding away" and then in the next sentence say the vulnerable need to protect themselves

Our work rules are if you test positive or you have cold/flu/covid symptoms then you WFH or are off sick depending on if you're unwell. They don't want people in with covid (or a cold)

I'm not in contact with people daily and managing to isolate myself as much as possible, it's not anxiety, it's consultant advice and balancing being realistic with being cautious. So I will go to an outdoor swim meet up but I won't go to a busy restaurant. I ask people who are visiting (friends etc) to take a covid test which I'll give them so they don't need to pay, or if it's workmen etc then I'll leave the house and make sure the windows are open

I'm not stuck in 2020 or I would be totally alone 365 days of the year but I've had covid, was unwell and don't want it again because of the long term effects, being unwell short term, loss of money...

In 2020…

Like I said your workplace doesn’t represent a viable sample size versus the national data that the government has.

I mean I could say I know lots of people (including my own children) who were asymptomatic. But it wouldn’t be a strong argument so I’ll stick to the official figures.

You can’t argue that Covid often isn’t asymptomatic- it’s fact backed by evidence. In fact I think it’s something like 30% of all cases - I’d need to check the OFFiCIAL figures though…

You replied with such speed that you couldn’t possibly have even read my previous posts to establish if I changed my stance or not. You are just hellbent on arguing with anyone who dares have a different opinion despite your obvious lack of education on the topic.

It is an utter waste of time discussing this with you. Fortunately OP lives in the real world and did not miss her holiday, you do you with your scare mongering.

FYI - posting weblinks without actually appraising the research behind it is sending someone’s opinion. There are a lot of things professionals consider before deciding whether the evidence is actually worth following. Something you appear to be blissfully unaware of
