Pretty much that
Going to Lanzarote tomorrow and woke up Sunday with sore throat.
Anyway yesterday I had a lots of phlegm and felt like I had a head cold.
Had a test lying around and it was a strong positive.
I've never had covid before but at the minute it feels like a cold.
No temperature and I haven't lost my appetite /don't feel sick or anything just feel like I have a head cold.
I feel guilty having to get on a plane with covid but if I don't go it's a £3000 holiday
I am okay now to go abroad with covid aren't I?

The stress you feel about this will be doing you more harm. You are in contact with people with Covid if you go out and about - go to the shops, go on public transport, go to work..

Of course people are leaving the house with Covid!

I don’t feel stressed about this, because thankfully in my world I’m surrounded by people who aren’t selfish enough to knowingly spread illnesses around. If I turned up to work, social event, family’s house obviously poorly I’d be sent home and rightly so.

Most people I know have had covid. I don’t know a single person who was asymptomatic. I accept that there must be some who are, but I don’t know a single one. Everyone I know has been at least as ill as a bad cold, most ill like bad flu. I know more people who have long lasting/ permanent lung damage than people who were asymptomatic. You were one of the lucky ones, don’t forget that when you’re being so flippant about spreading it around.

Well it started late Saturday night /early Sunday so by Wednesday night I'm nearly passed the 5 days I'm contagious
So I'm hoping that and a mask and hand gel will be okay.

As a teacher I was told by the Head to take 3 days off when I recently had Covid.

I felt ill for longer so was absent for longer but if I'd have felt well, I'd have gone in after the 3 days.

No legal requirement to test and half the plane probably have Covid without knowing.

If you feel okay enough to travel, wear a mask on the plane and go - have a great holiday!

I find it quite unbelievable that your entire social and professional circle never goes anywhere poorly. Far more likely they just don't tell you to avoid the drama.

How would you or they know? They wouldn’t test. Not when it was based on symptoms and definitely not now as hardly anyone is

The NHS are telling staff not to test for work purpose. They are also requesting staff continue to work as normal unless they feel unwell. These are the staff you encounter at midwife appointments and the gp surgery. As this thread has shown, there are many who will have it with minimal symptoms and not realise and the chances are you will come into contact with them no matter what ‘your world’ of social contacts do.

No one is suggesting turning upto anything poorly, just that if you feel well enough, life continues as normal

A couple of posters seem to think their small sample of people who have had Covid with severe symptoms represent the general population. Newsflash - they don’t!! The official statistics clearly show there is significant asymptomatic spread - this is how it spread in the first place and we ended up using lockdowns to try limit it.

Don’t be so fucking stupid. Acknowledging a new strain is severe is nothing like touting for lockdowns! We are NOT and will never lock down again but covid that doesn’t mean the new strain is a walk in the park. Such black and white thinking.

You don’t know a single asymptomatic person? Read that through again and have a little think…

How do you know nobody is walking around the supermarket with Covid? Do you personally test them all? Ditto your work? Ditto every public place.

Nobody is testing anymore!!

Well, people don’t come to work ill or they get sent home. I don’t have any control over this. I’ve never had any drama with anybody about turning up to social events etc ill because people just don’t do it. It’s not a topic of conversation here. People just stay at home to get better when they’re ill so they don’t spread it.

Once again, you are missing the point. The new strain was severe for you and those you know. That does NOT represent the general population. It will be severe for some and mild for others - like the OP of this post.

I haven’t for a second suggested you are touting for lockdowns, just explained the reason we needed to lockdown previously was because the level of asymptomatic spread was underestimated by the government in Feb/March 2020. We haven’t required similar measures for other SARS viruses because the symptoms are so severe, people are isolated before they can spread it

We all tested regularly in the early days of covid. We did this to make sure we didn’t have covid and spread it around if we were asymptomatic! I don’t know anybody who tested positive without any symptoms!

FrenchandSaunders · 26/10/2023 07:57

When you say millions, do you mean worldwide.

as far as the Uk is concerned:

Just under 227,000 people died in the UK with Covid-19 listed as one of the causes on their death certificate. This includes those who had not been tested for the virus prior to their death.

Obviously it’s world wide duh.

6,631,663 people have died from covid and counting. Just think about that number. It’s absolutely enormous.

Then compare how many deaths from your average common cold and you will see how totally ridiculous and inaccurate it is to compare the two.

Yes, back in the first couple of years of covid we regularly tested, multiple times per week. To ensure that we weren’t asymptomatic and spreading it! Not one person tested positive without symptoms. I’m not saying it doesn’t happen, but from my experience it isn’t common to be asymptomatic.

With respect you are missing the point. You haven’t even had the latest strain yet, so come back on here when you do and I will tell you it’s just a cold.

Every single person I know with this strain has been totally flattened bar nobody - even young kids. I can’t be bothered to describe to you just how hideous it is this time around, but you are wedged firmly in denial. 🤷🏼‍♀️ So you do you.

Died of Covid and died with Covid are not the same thing. Before calling others stupid, maybe you should consider how biased and clouded your own judgement is

I don’t think it’s specific geographical area that’s making the difference but I’ve clearly got a much nicer and more considerate social circle, family and workplace than mumsnet…

Unless you know about 7 people total that's just not possible.
Come back when your kid is at school and tell us again that you never go anywhere with a cold.

Exactly. Everyone I know who’s had it since schools have gone back have been really unwell. People with no health issues etc. People have been off work for 3+ weeks.

I work in a very large office and have a normal sized group of friends and family, thanks. All people with kids who manage not to bring their colds into work/ to social events.
It’s not my fault that you and your people don’t give a shit about one another.

Resorting to insults when you can’t argue back?!

I am a medical professional with more than 10 years experience in appraising literature. I separated from my then toddlers and worked front line on intensive care units and Covid wards for the first lockdown in March 2020. I saw first hand the effects of the virus. I have also seen the difference the vaccine has made. I have a parent who is immunosuppressed and have full insight on the need for the vulnerable to protect themselves.

Your uneducated opinion based on your tiny sample size of your social circle is meaningless in comparison
