I'll leave it to you what constitutes a classic. I'm not the thread police.

I'm torn between Anne of Green Gables, Black Beauty and A Little Princess.

What were your favourites growing up?

Heidi
The Railway Children

FeverBeam · 22/10/2023 18:39

My favourite E Nesbit book was The Story of the Treasure Seekers, but it doesn't seem to get mentioned as much as some of her others.

I was a complete bookworm but could never get into Noel Streatfeild's books. None of her characters ever gelled with me.

I was also a complete bookworm but somehow I've never read a single book by her.

George's marvellous medicine, cops and robbers

The Animal's of Farthing Wood series.

I adored those. I loved the show too and avidly collected the magazines.

Though I wouldn't necessarily call cops and robbers a classic, just a classic from my own childhood

Henrietta’s House, by Elizabeth Goudge
The Swish of the Curtain, Pamela Brown
The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe
Peter Pan
Heidi
Black Beauty

I LOVED The Swish of the Curtain. Tried in vain to get the sequels!

Also The Borrowers, the Trebizon series and another series set in a school where there were twins and one was into falconry.

The Hundred and One Dalmatians. I borrowed it from the local library and - honestly - kept renewing it for about a year. I did have lots of books but my mother wouldn’t buy this one as I’d “already read it”.
Swallows and Amazons
Black Beauty
What Katy Did
all the Famous Five books
all the Pullein-Thompson sisters’ pony books (I still have a few beside my bed)

Gilead · 22/10/2023 18:54

Tom’s Midnight Garden,
Everything Evelyn Nesbit (Five children and it etc.)
Everything Noel Streatfield (Ballet Shoes etc)
Half Magic, Edward Eager

Lansonmaid · 22/10/2023 18:54

Swallows and Amazons, Peter Duck, We didn't mean to go to sea and Secret Water - my favourite Arthur Ransome books.
The Famous Five and the Adventure series
The Chronicles of Narnia
Also a series of horse stories by Hazel.M .Peel
Elidor - even though it scared the living daylights out of me
Watership Down

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 22/10/2023 18:55

Any love for the Mr Whisper books by Brenda Macrow? God, I love those two books so much, used to borrow them from Exeter City children's library on rotation. Haven't been able to find a single copy since.
Oh, and Starlight Barking. Better than 101 Dalmations IMO.

AdaColeman · 22/10/2023 18:55

And when a little older...
The Eagle of the Ninth series
The Ruritanian series starting with The Prisoner of Zenda
The Count of Monte Cristo. (The classic tale of revenge!)

Burgundylover · 22/10/2023 18:56

I love many of these with A Secret Garden being my favourite. I would add the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and Little Women.

SirenSays · 22/10/2023 18:56

The Velveteen Rabbit

Barbadossunset · 22/10/2023 18:58

I think some books you either get or don’t.

Some of these here I saw on TV, eg Worzel Gummidge but never saw the books to read.

Watership Down I think I saw the book but by then I’d seen the film which scared me, so don’t think I wanted to read the book after that.

Wherethewildthymeblows · 22/10/2023 19:01

Winnie the Pooh
The Wind in the Willows
Laura Ingalls Wilder series
Swallows and Amazons series
Carbonel

And a random few people may not know:
The Magic Pudding by Norman Lindsay
The Wind on the Moon by Eric Linklater
A lemon and a Star by E C Spykman

PandyMoanyMum · 22/10/2023 19:05

All the E Nesbit books. I wish they’d remake some of the series on BBC. Loved the Phoenix and the Carpet, The Enchanted Castle.
All the Diane Wynne Jones books - especially the Chrestomanci Chronicles

muchalover · 22/10/2023 19:05

The borrowers. 10x over.
