I'll leave it to you what constitutes a classic. I'm not the thread police.

I'm torn between Anne of Green Gables, Black Beauty and A Little Princess.

What were your favourites growing up?

The Secret Garden - Frances Hodgson Burnett. One of my favourite books ever, it captures bereavement, loss and recovery so perfectly.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 22/10/2023 18:07

I really enjoyed the Paddington bear stories, also 101 Dalmatians is a great story.

I’ll add King of the Wind - I always dreamed of owning an Arab horse and now I do. I also loved the Jinny at Finmory books - For Love of a Horse, A Devil to Ride.

Wotwotwotwotwot · 22/10/2023 18:10

The Little White Horse by Elizabeth Goudge. I've read it so many times, it's perfect! And one of JKRs favourites apparently, I feel like I can see the influence in HP a little

ArtichokeAardvark · 22/10/2023 18:10

The Phantom Tollbooth.

The Giraffe, the Pelly and Me
Peter Pan and Wendy (the real one, not the Disney travesties!)
The Worst Witch.
The Angelina Ballerina series.
The Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe.

And because I'm sure they will one day be counted as classics - Harry Potter.

Terfosaurus · 22/10/2023 18:11

Ballet Shoes. Noel Streatfeild

Also loved The secret Garden, A little Princess and The Painted Garden.

Another vote for The Secret Garden.
Also the Chronicles of Narnia of course, and Children of the New Forest by Captain Marryat.
I've read most of the books on the thread so far but these I've all read many times.

A Little Princess

What Katy Did - bit trite but the school of pain poem has got me through a few tough times.

Anne of green gables - bend in the road Smile

Tom’s Midnight Garden

Loved them all.

I was a complete bookworm but could never get into Noel Streatfeild's books. None of her characters ever gelled with me.
