I’ve had a lovely day after my trip back to Scotland. My eldest daughter appeared in my bedroom about 8 am and had breakfast with me then said come round for your lunch after the gym mum. So I did. I also had a visit from a daughter in law and one of my grandsons before going round to another daughters for dinner. We had a delicious Biryani even though it floored me and when I arrived home at 7 I got straight into bed and slept for 3 hours. It wasn’t a very good idea as I’ll be up most of the night now but in this house we judge a Biryani on how quickly it knocks you out after eating it. Tonight’s was a good one!

Tilllly · 19/10/2023 20:22

@sueelleker
Looks lovely
But I'm lazy

Make it and post it to me please 😁

MissConductUS · 19/10/2023 20:27

Wow, the thread is only two days old and we already have over 100 posts! Thank you to all of the energetic joiners.

@ForfarBridie, why does Biryani (had to google it) knock you out?

I just had a lovely email from the WP (wedding planner). There are still some lovely venues available for DD's date next June. I was seriously starting to worry that we'd have to rent a hall somewhere and have it catered. She's going to visit one on Friday and another next Tuesday. Thank goodness we hired her.

Lemons we went to Mwnt and Llangrannog last year - both beautiful & the cakes in the NT cafe at Llangrannog were amazing.
I love Christmas cake and Christmas pudding - sadly, I love most high calorie foodsGrin. I make a chocolate yule log as an alternative pudding choice for Christmas Dinner, none of my grandchildren like dried fruit.
Miss belated congratulations on your DD's upcoming wedding.

therealcookiemonster · 19/10/2023 23:07

@MissConductUS tbh I find anything rice heavy - especially white rice knocks me out. in Bangladesh we have a special term for the nap one has after eating rice. biryani is pretty rice and fat heavy and its hard not to eat multiple helpings if it is well made. hence it will knock anyone out... I have heard that Indian food is not as readily available in the US as in the UK, is that true?

glad the wedding planning is going well. :-)

@IWanderedLonely I do love a yule log... but I do like to make nigella's chocolate brioche bread and butter pudding for Xmas. it is truly decadent...

Mumtobabyhavoc · 19/10/2023 23:26

Loving all the Christmas dessert tips! 😋😋

Havoc had dental hygiene today and am now trying to encourage a nap... but, we are meowing at each other and I am trying not to laugh. I just replied, Meow meow. Mummy loves you. Havoc said, Kisses? 🥰🥰🥰
Hallowe'en lights tonight again and thankfully the storm has passed and rain has stopped!!!

Mumtobabyhavoc · 19/10/2023 23:28

btw, we have excellent Indian food here!!!!
There is a dish of lamb in red curry I love.
(drooling now...). 😋😋😋😋

therealcookiemonster · 19/10/2023 23:28

@Mumtobabyhavoc that's adorable. it is important to get used to feline communication at an early age. :-)

Silkiefloof · 19/10/2023 23:33

Glad you had a good biryani Birdie I don't think I have ever tried one but we have though on every Indian menu here. I do love an Indian meal though often have veg korma or passanda or a curry with fruit with pilau rice and a bit of peshwari naan. I love mango chutney as well. And love Thai and Chinese food.

Just having some champagne from yesterday. This is young Floof and the birthday cake. We also had cupcakes. DS has eaten an impressive amount of them over 24 hours, 7 cupcakes and 1 slice of cake, all red velvet.

We heard from kitchen guys that they hope to be in tomorrow or Monday, should be final time and then can put kitchen things back. The painters and decorators did day 3 out of 15 today but weather forecast is looking very iffy now on, about one day a week of not rain all day but there's no rush and they are also doing a good job. Its a mother and daughter team. Floof was a bit scared by the electric sander and went under my bed but I got his fishing rod out and he happily gamed. Rare to see Floof scared.

Went swimming today and DH stayed on the loungers as he has ear issues so I could swim more and did 150 lengths X 15m and jacuzzi steam room and sauna before DH told me it was getting late. Was lovely though fairly empty.

Tilllly · 20/10/2023 02:42

Awww Floof!! Love that pic

My girls get scared by the fireworks but Buttons sits on the windowsill and watches them

DilemmaDelilah · 20/10/2023 05:16

I had the nicest day yesterday. Went to buy my sister's Christmas present and then had lunch out. It might not sound like much, but it is the first time I have felt well enough to leave the house except for hospital appointments since the end of June.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 20/10/2023 05:50

Good for you Dilemma. 😊

WmFnKdSg1234 · 20/10/2023 07:54

Both cake and cat look fab @Silkiefloof
.

Have started my day with quiet. Relaxing with the first and only coffee I have for the day.

Nothing planned as yet, I do believe that I have a flu jab appointment don't know the time, will ring doctor's surgery to find out would not want to miss it.

I have a very good book that I am reading that I hope to finish.

Has anyone anything interesting planned for this weekend?

Tilllly · 20/10/2023 08:00

That's great @DilemmaDelilah 😊

It doesn’t take much for me to decide I’m not going to the gym, but this weather… 💨 🌧️ I don’t want to drive in it!

Am having a facepack and a pedicure, putting the heating on, staying in

Silkiefloof · 20/10/2023 08:17

Thanks Tilllly Floof is only 1 but seemed OK with fireworks. Enjoy your day out.

Well done @DilemmaDelilah

Thanks WmFnKdSg1234 Hope flu jab goes OK.

DD has just left for school. Painters won't come today as it's rainy today. They will be in Monday and Friday next week weather permitting forecast is ok for that atm but having 3 days off for half term.

This weekend DD is doing her punting job one day and school frisbee team the other day and some A level work. DH and I will go swimming probably Sunday evening. If the kitchen guys appear today I will faint with shock we will hopefully put kitchen back. We could actually put back anyway but a bit nervous then will create lots of dust etc as they have one worktop to trim and forecast is dubious for outside.

whyyy321 · 20/10/2023 10:21

DH dropped DS at nursery this morning AND took dog with him- meant I got 30 min of truly alone time at home! Obviously I just cleaned the kitchen, but still!

Just been to osteopath, back is blissful.

Good reminder about the fireworks. Dog hasn't minded in past but with the move and stuff I wonder if he might this time....

MissConductUS · 20/10/2023 14:00

cookiemonster, I have never been to the UK so I cannot judge if Indian restaurants are more common there than here. I suspect that they are, as Wikipedia tells me that there are about five million people of South Asian heritage in the US out of about 330 million. I think the cohort is much larger in the UK. They are heavily concentrated in certain areas, including New York and New Jersey. Anecdotally, my medium-sized town has two Indian restaurants. Italian, Chinese, and American style restaurants are much more common.

And you can hardly throw a rock without hitting a pizza place. One difference I've noted regarding pizza is that MN'ers seem to order mostly from pizza chains, like Papa John's or Domino's. Independent family owned pizza places are much more common here than the chain stores.

DS and I are both taking the day off. We're going to meet the WP at one of the venues this morning for a tour and then going to the cinema this afternoon. DH will meet her next Tuesday at another venue to see it. It's pretty close to where he works.

@WmFnKdSg1234 hope your flu jab goes well, I am due for mine and a covid top up... ive lost count how many boosters I've had. what are you reading btw, I am always on the hunt for books to read...
@Silkiefloof did you give floof a little taste of the icing?

@MissConductUS I have to say pizza in the chains in the UK are nothing resembling actual pizza and I feel they have all gone even more downhill in recent years. thankfully we are getting more independent proper pizza places, at least in urban areas. I live in Birmingham and we have a few now.

yes indian food is hugely, if not the most popular cuisine in the UK. although sadly most places churn out very watered down/mutilated version of dishes that no self respecting south Asian person would want to eat. your wedding planning seems to be going well, are you looking at hotels or more outdoorsy type places?

I did some cooking today - cream of cauliflower soup and a chocolate and orange cake with ganache. I also made a big batch of pizza dough - I leave it in the fridge and it lasts for upto 4 days. its easy to just take it out and make a quick pizza when I am in a rush.

TattyOne · 20/10/2023 16:42

I cleaned out the cat litter try this morning, I don't know how our beloved little fluff god managed to pass something so massive! Thankfully we've got a tub of Canac Cat Litter Deodoriser which makes the litter pong quite pretty!

Loads of boring washing up by hand...large kitchen with a washing machine and fridge but no space for a dishwasher...thankfully hubby and I take it in turns and it was HIS job this time! WEEEE!

Had our ex-landlord, who we rented our previous business address from and also a flat, pestering us today in our new place, here at work and our house ... we live in the attic above our shop...he thought that as I'm a woman I was going to sit there behind my works desk crying and whimpering but I stood my ground again and hubby had a go at him as landlord tried to intimidate him too and failed miserably! The old fart's in his 80s and well hated around here!

The rest of our day went quite well!

So that's my dull uninteresting news for the day!

Mumtobabyhavoc · 20/10/2023 17:29

Miss, a matinee??? That's such a school-skipping treat! 😁😁😁

I'm also getting flu shot soon-likely next week. Just had pregnancy DTaP & new covid one. Need two weeks wait for flu. Must book Havoc for flu/covid combo and arrange same for my mum.
Halloween lights again last night was fun! Havoc running around in costume was adorable. 🥰
One of the displays last night. Called "Club 27". Different rock music playing..took me a bit to realize it was all dead musicians...took me even longer to clue in reference was to musicians who died age 27.... Morrison/Winehouse/Joplin and others. Suitably grim for Hallowe'en.

Silkiefloof · 20/10/2023 18:00

Impressive lights Havoc if a little macabre.

No kitchen guys or outside of house today but kitchen said here on Monday, said that as an option twice now so think will come and painters are also coming that day and Friday. I just hope kitchen people finish and take stuff, there's very little to do but lots of bitty things.

Just changing to fleece bedding, get colder here. Suddenly gone very Autumny and not in a good way, dark and cold but on the plus side does mean swimming pool etc is much emptier.

Silkiefloof · 20/10/2023 18:01

Lovely meal cookie No icing for Floof. He found the flames fascinating but scary and ran after.

mathanxiety · 20/10/2023 18:51

suelleker
The Mary Berry recipe was the one with equal amounts of all ingredients. DD weighed the eggs first, then added the same amount of flour, sugar, etc. The HP book stated measurements for the ingredients and a set number of eggs. Plus it required far too little baking powder.

Having a quiet Friday at work here, after defeating a heavy cold that got the better of me earlier in the week. A doctor's appointment I had set up ages ago for mid December was canceled so I called to reschedule.

The trees are starting to turn here. The sugar maples look really fiery. I sent a box of heavier sweaters to DD in New England on Monday, which arrived safely on Thursday, and she reports T-shirt and jeans weather today.

MissConductUS · 20/10/2023 18:59

Welcome, @TattyOne, and thanks for sharing your mundane cat, washing, and horrid landlord news. Apologies to any other newcomer I've missed. The thread is moving very fast, and I'm in a spin about all of the wedding issues at the moment.

Cookie, the wedding planning turned a bit rough today. The place we went to visit was very run down. Neither the WP or I would recommend it to DD. Then DH found out that the place he and WP had planned to visit next Tuesday is not available on DD's date. They had mistakenly told DD that it was. They do have a smaller facility on the same property, but it would require cuts to the guest list as it can only seat 115 people. Of course, her fiancee's family massively took the piss with their list, so they can make the cuts needed without touching our list or the friends the couple wants to invite. The WP still has a few other places to look at.

To answer your question about the venue, they want a church ceremony, with the reception someplace rustic. We hadn't thought of a hotel as there aren't many that are suitable in the area. We live in an area called The Hudson Highlands that is borderline suburban and rural, with more rural as you get further north. Because the area is quite historic there are some nice places to have the reception, but DD's timeline for next June is very tight. She's been as stubborn as a mule quite set on the date, but she may have to reconsider, given how limiting it's turning out to be.

@TattyOne sorry you had an awful time with your ex-landlord today... surely they can't harrass you like this after you have moved out? also... any chance of a kitty pic? I am a sucker for those...
@MissConductUS yes June is peak wedding season 🤔i wish you the best of luck with finding a suitable venue... I mean if you are really stuck, I think a nice marquee in a scenic location can be endearing?
@Mumtobabyhavoc those Halloween lights are very different to anything I have seen before lol. very original...
