17 isn’t freezing. If 21 is a warm/ hot day in summer then 17 is nice an comfortable.

I would need a warm jumper at 17 degrees. 17 degrees indoors in winter feels different to 17 degrees outdoors on a spring or autumn day.

BastetsWhiskers · 17/10/2023 21:16

Off here. It's 10°c and does feel a bit nippy.

Vettrianofan · 17/10/2023 22:07

17C is freezing.

43ontherocksporfavor · 17/10/2023 22:08

Yes but we can wear warm jumpers in the house. You can’t expect to walk about in shorts and a t shirt inside in autumn unless you want a massively heating bill. I like to be warm but have cool air around me. I’m currently sitting up in bed next to an open window. Perfect.

Can’t bear stuffy houses. Dries your skin out.

Help. I don't understand how heating works. I'm a fairly intelligent adult but I have a massive brain block.

My house is currently 15.4. The thermostat thing is in the living room (which is right, right? It should be in the room you're always in?).

I have Hive- if I set the schedule for 17, (from 7-9am and 5-9pm) does this mean it'll always come on and make the house as warm as 17 during those times? Cos 17 is freezing. Some people on this thread are saying they have it 23- if I put it as 23, will it always try to make the house 23?

Yes. I have mine set at 23C to dry washing through the night, but in general I would be freezing with room temperature at 17. It's always working hard to keep the house 23C, with the hive heating system.

Edited

Cool air in a house in autumn doesn't dry clothes unfortunately.

cardibach · 17/10/2023 23:17

No. I’m a ’heating in thermostat control’ person. It comes on when it gets cold (ie below 18).

cardibach · 17/10/2023 23:40

Vettrianofan · 16/10/2023 21:36

Yes. I live in Scotland!!

What’s your location got to do with it? 23 is 23 in Aberdeen or Bermuda.

The thermostat is usually put in the coldest spot in the house. Normally a hallway. You then balance the radiators and adjust the valves/thermostatic valves on those to adjust each room.

If a thermostat is set to a certain temperature it means the heating will come on if the thermostat records that it has dropped below that temperature.

Why would you put the thermostat in the coldest place? Put it where you sit and decide how warm you want that place, then set the thermostat to keep it there. No need for adjustments.

Because it tends to get coldest in Scotland over anywhere else. That's why. Putting my thermostat on at 20C wouldn't make a dent in heating the house.

I don't understand this. 20c in the house feels the same in any house, doesn't it?
The heating will have to work harder to keep it at 20c when it's colder outside though.

RampantIvy · 18/10/2023 06:29

No it doesn't @Stonemaiden. It depends on the humidity and where the thermostat is situated.

Crumpetdisappointment · 18/10/2023 06:49

our thermostat is in the hall, we had no choice in this

43ontherocksporfavor · 18/10/2023 06:58

@Vettrianofan washing dries here, not overnight but it dries. Consider a heated drying rack if not to save heating the whole house for a 1m by 1 m requirement.

I don't expect the washing to dry completely overnight, but what I don't want is the clothes to smell damp and that will only happen if no heating is on overnight.

No thanks, have tried those aired heaters. They are useless.

RampantIvy · 18/10/2023 07:29

Get a dehumidifier @Vettrianofan. They are a game changer.

43ontherocksporfavor · 18/10/2023 07:30

My washing does not smell.

When our heating engineer replace our boiler he put the thermostat on the wall in the stairwell. Seems to work ok and keep the whole house at the required temperature.

margotrose · 18/10/2023 07:42

Ours is on as it's only about 4 degrees when I leave for work in the mornings.

It's on for an hour in the morning and an hour when I get in from work - we only have it set to 18.5 though.

Sleeplessinseattle234 · 18/10/2023 09:38

Mine this morning was still at 18. And I wasn’t cold. So not on today.

This makes no sense. If you set it to 20 and it doesn’t get to 20 then it won’t get any hotter putting it to 23.

You see this quite often. People want their houses at 20 and think it will get there more quickly if they crank the thermostat up to 35. It won’t.

Vettrianofan · 18/10/2023 17:06

Think we are at cross purposes here @cardibach . I don't intend to heat it to 20C as that just isn't warm enough in the home for my own circumstances and health.

Not everyone has a well insulated house or a new build. I am sure it wouldn't need to be cranked up if it was better insulated.
