It crossed my mind for the first time today to stick the heating on for an hour or so

I haven't - but anyone else toasting themselves yet?

Off today. It did consider it this morning but put dressing gown, slippers and blanket on and was warm by the time I needed to get moving.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 14/10/2023 15:25

I have a stand alone electric heater which I put on for about an hour last night just to warm up the room I was in. That was the first time I’d used any heating this season.

Kam610 · 14/10/2023 15:28

It's only 5° here in NE Scotland so we have our heating on for sure! But we have a wood burning stove which also heats the radiators and hot water so not worried about having it on as we're not using oil which is so expensive right now.

DyslexicPoster · 14/10/2023 15:28

Off until November I hope! Not doing what I did last year and getting down to 7 degrees! The boiler is being serviced next week so I'm hoping for a warmer winter ( unless it's condemned of course in which case I'm happy to freeze until I get the money for a new heating system). I'm waiting for about 15-12 degrees then it can go on

ListenLinda · 14/10/2023 15:29

Off currently, but was debating in earlier when we got home from the park.

I am a bit chilly, thermostat is reading 17.3 degrees in the coldest room in the house (kitchen, north facing). We are all currently in the (south facing) living room. DH is fine.
Only reason for holding off is my kids are currently sat in short sleeved t shirts and havent mentioned feeling cold.

Stonemaiden · 14/10/2023 15:30

Mine was on today as we'd left several windows open overnight and the temperature dropped fairly dramatically overnight. So the thermostat goes on at 18c I think. Turned it off as soon as we realised!

Soontobe60 · 14/10/2023 15:31

We have lit our wood burner today! Its cold and damp here.

BloodandGlitter · 14/10/2023 16:00

Not a chance, no way I can afford it yet. Won't get any better as it gets colder but I'm in the East Midlands and have my window open all day and night.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 14/10/2023 16:06

Heating off.Log burner on low.

Enderunicorn · 14/10/2023 16:10

It's still 21 in the house even with a few windows open. Still have ceiling fan on low at night.

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 14/10/2023 16:10

Not yet. The thermostat shows 15.9 so definitely close to putting it on! Our main living space though is full south facing with huge windows so I've been sitting in there in just a t shirt, it is only when I go in the rest of the house I realise how cold it feels. So spend the day on the warm bit then in the North facing living room snuggle under blanket in the evening. Rarely heat bedrooms anyway as I end up too hot.

DahliaMacNamara · 14/10/2023 16:16

Not yet. It's 12 degrees outside and sunny, so perfectly cosy indoors for now. The next couple of days might want a bit of warming up though.

RampantIvy · 14/10/2023 16:19

What's with all the heating threads?
It's cold outside - 7 degrees, so my heating is on. I am not prepared to be a martyr to the cold, and it is not a moral failing to feel the cold.

Where is it still warm enough in the UK to need a fan?

Neekoh · 14/10/2023 16:20

Humidity is a huge factor as well - the more humid, the worse the cold feels. Dry air/heat is a lot more comfortable at lower temps.

Crooklodge · 14/10/2023 16:22

Mine's been on for a month or so at least. Fuck being cold. I do have a medical condition made worse by the cold and am one of those permanently cold people though.

My parents never got central heating until I moved out, nae use having fires/stoves in rooms that no one wants to sit in.

RampantIvy · 14/10/2023 16:22

Good point @Neekoh, and altitude. We are always a degree or two colder than the village down the hill.

Sleeplessinseattle234 · 14/10/2023 16:23

Nope. My thermostat has read that the house has been 21 today. Been cold outside and windy but the house is still warm. I’m in suffolk. So it’s not really cold enough here to put it on. I had a fan on last night.

garlictwist · 14/10/2023 16:24

The wind is really cold today where I am (Yorkshire). I am sitting inside with a hot water bottle on my feet and heating on.

JonHammIsMyJamm · 14/10/2023 16:26

Ours is controlled thermostatically and has only kicked in a couple of times recently. It’s still mild where I am though.

Titsywoo · 14/10/2023 16:27

Nowhere near cold enough in our house yet - hasn't dropped below 20 but we do have very good insulation. This autumn has been fairly warm in the SE so far so no need for coats or anything yet. I hope we can get to November without using it to save some money.

Nopenopenopenopenopenope · 14/10/2023 16:30

I've only had one month this year without at least one fire.

But yes, heating clicked on this morning. I live in an old house and it needs heating to stave off the moisture.

DinnaeFashYersel · 14/10/2023 16:33

Mine has been on for weeks.

8C today

Will be 2C overnight.

megletthesecond · 14/10/2023 16:34

Finally gone on here in Hampshire. It's set to 18°.

Izzy24 · 14/10/2023 16:36

Moveoverdarlin · 14/10/2023 15:14

Nope. I’m in the SW and currently sat in the garden in glorious sunshine.

Same 😊

saythatagaintome · 14/10/2023 16:40

Gymmum82 · 14/10/2023 15:16

No. We’re holding out until 1st November at the earliest. Even then it’ll only be set to 15 degrees and on for 2 hours a day max.

We managed last year with extra layers and hot water bottles. Can’t afford to have it on more than the bare minimum

As I’m reading everyone’s responses to this, I have one question…

how do you tolerate it? To work so hard to live in a place you can’t feel warm in, because you can’t afford the heating? Do you ever dream of moving somewhere warm and if yes, what’s stoping you?
