It crossed my mind for the first time today to stick the heating on for an hour or so

I haven't - but anyone else toasting themselves yet?

SE - have put it on this morning as 3 degrees when I woke up and felt cold! It probably could do with being turned off now but I have a cat on my lap so feel too toasty and cosy to get up😀.

RampantIvy · 15/10/2023 10:34

but i just went and got changed into more appropriate clothes

Don't most people wear weather appropriate clothes anyway? I will always wear warmer clothes in cold weather, but when it reaches a point where the ambient temperature is uncomfortably cold no amount of jumpers and socks will warm me up.

Berninaa · 15/10/2023 10:39

Changing into more appropriate clothes doesn't help the air temperature or my severe asthma.

Exactly this. The bloody smugness in those words is unbearable. I have Raynauds, so am already dressed warmly. I rarely have bare feet even in summer due to it. 15.9° in the house is very much a tipping point for putting the heating on.

We had 30 minutes today, to take the chill off.

xogossipgirlxo · 15/10/2023 11:25

I put heating on demand for now. It was 17C in the bedroom so my husband put heating on. When it gets warm I just switch it off, which is around 20C. Nearer December we will set the timer on I suppose. I don’t want to keep house too warm, but not too cold either as we have a baby now and I want him to feel comfortable.

i wasnt being smug!
i was talking about me,
i was wearing short trousers, a t shirt, a light cardigan, so i got changed,
no need to take it personally - i am not suggesting you do the same am it?

Actually, there is that inference, yes.

Nope, others before me thought the same.

MartyFunkhouser · 15/10/2023 11:34

We haven’t put the heating on yet but we lit the wood burner last night as it was quite cold here.

Crumpetdisappointment · 15/10/2023 11:34

i have hit a nerve with my innocent comment about what i do?
you are hitting out at me because i changed my clothes into something more appropriate, this is Your issue, not mine @NoWordForFluffy

JonHammIsMyJamm · 15/10/2023 11:43

FWIW, I didn’t read your comment as snarky @Crumpetdisappointment .

Crumpetdisappointment · 15/10/2023 11:47

good to know , thanks @JonHammIsMyJamm

Do you always take things so personally
Changing from shorts and and t.shirt in the house to tracksuit is a perfectly reasonable thing for any healthy adult to do.
Of course this may not apply to people with certain conditions but the comment was a general post on a thread, not a personal comment about you.

Do you always fail to read the countless others who've posted the same thing as I have?

2 other people
1 saying the do that anyway
1 saying it doesn't help them

You say that doesn't help me because...... is fine
To call others smug because a reply doesnt suit a specific condition you have on a post not aimed at you is not.

Polis · 16/10/2023 09:39

That link says a minimum of 18, particularly if you are over 65, not very mobile or have health conditions. But then says minimum of 16 if you have a sleeping baby.

What about sleeping adults?

RampantIvy · 16/10/2023 10:02

What about sleeping adults?

Unless they are old or infirm an adult wouldn't need a temperature of 16 degrees at night when under a nice warm duvet. We both feel the cold, but very rarely have the heating on at night - only if it is required to prevent the pipes from freezing.

43ontherocksporfavor · 16/10/2023 16:21

Heating always off at night here! All adults but we are in bed under a duvet with pyjamas on. I grew up in the 70s when you woke up with frost on your nose!

HideTheCroissants · 16/10/2023 20:53

bungletru · 15/10/2023 08:34

Heating on. Have to, we have a baby!

We didn’t actually have central heating at home until I was 12 years old. DHs childhood was similar. Us and our siblings all survived.

However the radiator in my bathroom was warm this morning so the temperature must have dropped below 17.5 at some point between 5:30 am and 6:30 am. There was frost on the shed roofs too. Heating hasn’t come on this evening though.

No amount of layers or hot water bottles or hot chocolates or cups of tea/coffee warms me up if it's stone cold in a house. Heating on at 23/24 at least from October. Needs to be toasty. Also need to fend off mould where we are. Which would be more costly if it got out of control.

Vettrianofan · 16/10/2023 21:21

Heating on night and day at 23C. Couldn't cope sleeping in a cold house.

But it doesn't matter if you bring on your asthma attack due to the cold in your home, as long as you are saving money and not switching on the heating in the winter months remember 😃

Albioncreed · 16/10/2023 21:28

Yes. In northern Scotland. Inside our
house is always colder that outside. If we don’t have the heating on, then our clothes won’t dry.

I also have migraines every year at this time due to the change to cold weather. So having the heating on helps
