We have used our wood burner a few times over the last few days. Heating is on a auto system if it drops below 15 degrees I think it kicked in this morning but we had ground frost here so it was pretty damn cold this morning!

Heating on night and day at 23C. Couldn't cope sleeping in a cold house.

23 degrees at night?

23 degrees at night?

Yes. I live in Scotland!!

Vettrianofan · 16/10/2023 21:37

It's been very cold in Scotland for at least a few weeks now. Warrants having the heating on 🥶

Vettrianofan · 16/10/2023 21:39

If I have the heating set at less than 23C it doesn't activate and clothing doesn't dry on clothes horses and they smell of damp. Hive heating system.

EggTheParrot · 16/10/2023 22:02

No but the fire is on

Are we heating on or off?

We didn’t actually have central heating at home until I was 12 years old. DHs childhood was similar. Us and our siblings all survived.

However the radiator in my bathroom was warm this morning so the temperature must have dropped below 17.5 at some point between 5:30 am and 6:30 am. There was frost on the shed roofs too. Heating hasn’t come on this evening though.

Probably was the case when I was a baby too! But our house is v cold.. and lots on unsolicited advice gets me paranoid 😂

caringcarer · 16/10/2023 22:27

I haven't put it on yet. I probably should do becaus it is chilly, but I'm going on holiday in 10 days for 2 weeks and I was really hoping not to put it on until we get back November 11th.

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 17/10/2023 06:22

I caved yesterday. NE England. End terrace. It was 14C in the house when I got home from work so heating is on. Timer with thermostat so just takes then edge off in the morning for getting up and at home from school and work time then a bit warmer in the evening. In the day and overnight it is doesn't come on.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 17/10/2023 06:35

It’s been kicking in for weeks now when the temperature has dropped lower enough (I’m in the north). I use my heating when the temperature dictates, not the calendar.

Berninaa · 17/10/2023 06:47

I put mine on at 2am for an hour in the night as it had dropped to 16.9 degrees and was triggering my asthma. I'll turn the minimum up to 21 today, it doesn't come on during the day once we have left for work and comes on again at about 4pm.

soupweather · 17/10/2023 07:03

-3 outside this morning. Heating is on.

Decafflatteplease · 17/10/2023 07:11

13 degrees in our house currently. I'm already bored of the cold! Can't afford to put it on yet though 😞 it feels really damp and chilly, have dehumidifier running approx 6 hours a day which has helped a little

Same.

Polis · 17/10/2023 08:16

Ours comes on depending on the temperature inside not outside.

MintJulia · 17/10/2023 08:31

I put it on yesterday for an hour to check it was working and bleed the radiators. Thankfully no problems.

Now it's off and I'm sitting wrapped in a blanket. 🙂

MintJulia · 17/10/2023 08:34

Having said that, I've been splitting last year's logs for weeks now, so when it really gets cold, the log burner will be lit every evening. 🙂

Doesn't your skin flake off like snow with that amount of c/heating ?!

43ontherocksporfavor · 17/10/2023 16:45

Ours is off. Thermostat says it’s 19c in the living room and I feel warm.

megletthesecond · 17/10/2023 18:53

I was WFH today. Slipper socks, thick tracksuit bottoms, vest and jumper. Blue lips and 22° inside.
My blood tests have always been fine. I just can't be warm unless I'm moving or the air is hot.

TallulahG · 17/10/2023 19:29

Help. I don't understand how heating works. I'm a fairly intelligent adult but I have a massive brain block.

My house is currently 15.4. The thermostat thing is in the living room (which is right, right? It should be in the room you're always in?).

I have Hive- if I set the schedule for 17, (from 7-9am and 5-9pm) does this mean it'll always come on and make the house as warm as 17 during those times? Cos 17 is freezing. Some people on this thread are saying they have it 23- if I put it as 23, will it always try to make the house 23?

Desecratedcoconut · 17/10/2023 19:36

The temp you put in hive on a schedule is a target temperature. So in the time windows you have set, it will kick in if it's below that target temperature and then maintain it for the duration. (However, there is a 'ready by' setting (which I can't use apparently because I also have hive valves on some radiators that apparently are incompatible with the setting?) which means if you opt for that it will start heating the house so that it reaches the target temperature at the beginning of that time window and then maintain it.)

The thermostat is usually put in the coldest spot in the house. Normally a hallway. You then balance the radiators and adjust the valves/thermostatic valves on those to adjust each room.

If a thermostat is set to a certain temperature it means the heating will come on if the thermostat records that it has dropped below that temperature.

43ontherocksporfavor · 17/10/2023 21:00

17 isn’t freezing. If 21 is a warm/ hot day in summer then 17 is nice an comfortable.

Desecratedcoconut · 17/10/2023 21:04

17c is too cold for me.
