No but the log fire has been on since lunchtime in the room we're in. It's currently in single figures outside and been pelting it down with hail on and off all day. 2C is forecast for the next few nights. So I think it's probably time to switch it back on.

Bertiesmum3 · 14/10/2023 17:31

No
its 15/16c during the day here and around 6/8c overnight, still wearing shorts and t-shirts, I have recently changed my flip flops for trainer socks and trainers, purely because of the rain we’ve had.
Bedroom windows and bathroom windows are open 24/7.

WombatChocolate · 14/10/2023 17:31

Off. My house thermostat says 20 degrees at 5.30pm. I haven’t worn a coat yet and am in sandals most days. It’s been amazingly warm for Oct here.

I understand temps will drop shortly. I’d hope to make it to Nov without heating, or certainly only heating on one or two odd occasions.

I don’t run the heating by thermostat alone, but by thermostat and timer. Last winter Inset it at about 18degrees for 1 hr in mornings and 5 hrs in evenings. I plan to do the same this year, Nov- March.

Ours is an Edwardian semi so not particularly well insulated and has high ceilings

Same. It's a pain. We're moving soon hopefully, if the vendor's solicitors bloody get on with it to a new build. I can't wait!

Pleasedontdoit2023 · 14/10/2023 17:44

Yes have just switched it on ! We live in Edwardian Semi !

Sexnotgender · 14/10/2023 17:46

Off here.

DrCoconut · 14/10/2023 17:47

The one blessing of perimenopause, I'm no longer as cold. Heating is still off.

Georgyporky · 14/10/2023 17:50

Heating is "on" between 06.30 & 22.00 all year, we rely on thermostat to activate when temp falls below 20.

Whalewatchers · 14/10/2023 17:19

What sort of houses do people live in? We have a 3 bed semi and it's not dropped below 18 degrees inside so far this year (and it was 6 degrees outside first thing this morning).

Stone Georgian cottage. Every room has at least 2 outside walls. We’re also quite high up on the Mendips so the wind is keen

Decafflatteplease · 14/10/2023 18:24

We are team off!

Can't afford it to be on 😔 we need to be able to get our credit back In the spring so have to stick to our DD amount or less 😔

PuppyMonkey · 14/10/2023 18:25

My thermostat says it’s 17 degrees inside and 8 degrees outside. I’m sitting in a jumper and a scarf and it feels really cold at 6.20pm. I have a big blanket for when I go and sit and watch the telly later but with weather forecast predicting frosts for some of us tomorrow, I think flip flops and shorts might be out for me personally. Grin

Haven’t turned our heating on yet but I’m guessing tomorrow morning will be the grand switch on.

Iwantitidontwantit · 14/10/2023 18:39

Very much off. In Hampshire and just checked the main room thermostat and it's 20.5! Had windows open most of the day too. Although it's definitely much cooler morning and evening already

BloodandGlitter · 14/10/2023 19:03

I'm in a Victorian end of terrace 3 storey house, but I am also on medication that makes it hard for me to regulate my own temperature meant I was sweating buckets all summer.

weegiemum · 14/10/2023 19:10

Haven't had ours on yet but dd2 and me have been wearing our Oodies in the evening for the last week. I didn't get proper use of mine last winter as I only got it for Mother's Day in March, so looking forward to more toastiness this winter!!

As I’m reading everyone’s responses to this, I have one question…

how do you tolerate it? To work so hard to live in a place you can’t feel warm in, because you can’t afford the heating? Do you ever dream of moving somewhere warm and if yes, what’s stoping you?

I'm pretty miserable when cold whereas I'm fine with summer heat that other people find unbearable. I can afford to turn the heating on/up, but at its current cost, I'm choosing not to - we're three adults, so can tolerate it less warm. Last winter, we:

  • all wore Oodies in the evenings
  • opened windows to get humidity down and used dehumidifer when washing was drying
  • closed thermally lined blinds and curtains just before dark
  • dressed in wool and cotton layers including two pairs of socks
  • had more hot drinks and soup at lunchtime
  • turned heating on when it was really cold in the mornings for an hour and then early evenings. Once on sofa, Oodies on and heating off

It was OK. There were some days when we had the heating on more, especially if we had washing drying. After a few weeks, we got used to it. Have to say we were never really cold, but we didn't have an all day warm house as we had done in the past. When my kids were little, we were sometimes miserably cold, and I felt very resentful.

Gettingbysomehow · 14/10/2023 19:16

You must be joking. Here in Somerset it's way too warm for heating.

Berninaa · 14/10/2023 19:20

It’s 7 degrees outside here, 3 in the wind. My heating is on, has been most of the week in the evenings. Set to 22 degrees as I’m recovering from COVID and feeling cold.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 14/10/2023 19:21

Off/ I’m trying to get to November, I’m not sure we’ll make it but will try my best. Kids aren’t babies any more they can put a fluffy onesie on at night and be fine

MsInterpret · 14/10/2023 19:23

Using blankets here for now.

ichundich · 14/10/2023 19:24

Ours has been on today for about 1h. So lovely sitting next to it!

LadyEloise1 · 14/10/2023 19:25

On for an hour this evening.
We're watching the Rugby. 🇮🇪

End of terrace with four beds and three receptions, tons of tall sash windows, all double glazed with interlined curtains but glass can be cold imo.

I’m expecting my gas and electric to cost £225 a month this winter.

msssm · 14/10/2023 19:30

On for a couple of days on the thermostat. It's freezing here! NE Scotland. That's probably it on for winter.

harryoharriet · 14/10/2023 19:41

Just switched it on for an hour. It's very chilly.

Songbird54321 · 14/10/2023 19:43

Ours has been on a few days this week but not for long. We're at the top of a very large hill in NE England and it can get quite chilly with the wind. I don't bother putting it on in the morning as we leave the house early so it's barely warmed up by the time we're out the door but I do pop it on about 5pm for us coming in. We still sit with fleecy blankets on an evening.
Our DD is quite low compared to most we know and we have a good buffer of credit but we'd prefer that back in the Spring to go towards birthday presents as we have almost the whole family's birthdays between May and August so it gets expensive.
