Actors in roles that weren't all that convincing

And this is not an actor/actress bashing thread, an actor can be hit and miss depending on role, dialogue and other factors. And it's ok to agree to disagree.

Timothy Dalton was a much better Asriel.

But a disappointing James Bond. He just couldn't do the quipping.
And - in good company - a poor choice for Mr Rochester. They're nearly all far too good-looking.

Gina McKee as Fleur in the remake of the Forsyte Saga. Ludicrous

Kate Winslet in Titanic. Just the wrong fit for the role

Titanic is much better when Owlkitty plays that role. ;)

Maybe because she played Irene, not Fleur Grin

I thought Mr Rochester WAS good looking in the book, at least before a burning house collapsed on him? Not a pretty boy, but Byronic and dashing?

He seemed to have multiple women falling over themselves to marry him, anyway (Jane, Blanche, Bertha).

No, Jane is pretty clear that he’s not at all good-looking. Blanche is only after his money — when he starts a rumour his fortune isn’t half what is thought, she loses interest. Bertha, depending on whether you listen to Charlotte Bronte or Jean Rhys, is either an alcoholic, mad nymphomaniac shoved onto him by her family for his cash and breeding, or an inexperienced heiress sold off to a dissolute foreigner.

Stephen Graham as Jerry Westerby in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.

He's a good actor, really he is. But his voice was so wrong. He used his usual scouse voice and Jerry Westerby is absolutely not a scouser. He's patrician, an honourable, no amount of code switching explains the wrong voice.

It's the one failing in an almost perfect film.

I am amazed no-one has yet mentioned the abomination that is Mel Gibson in Braveheart.

I think that falls into its own special category which is waaay beyond ‘not that convincing’!

Oh yes! Laughable

And joined in that category by Dick van Dyke in Mary Poppins, Kevin Costner in Robin Hood Prince of Thieves and Pierce Brosnan in Mamma Mia

Surely Bertha had Huntington's disease.

I'd go further and say Mel Gibson in anything!

LuisVitton · 15/10/2023 13:51

Aww, I don’t think he was too bad in brave heart - the part was a loud, angry, uneducated man with a grudge (understandably)- he was well cast.

The part as written, perhaps.

The real Wallace was certainly not uneducated, he could read and write and had been taught both French and Latin. At 6 foot 5 plus (MG is about 5'8"), he may well have been loud. I think he was undoubtedly angry.

Oh come on, he was about as convincingly Scottish as Donald Trump. In fact Donald Trump also ticks the “loud angry stupid man with a grudge“ boxes, and probably wouldn’t have been any worse Grin

Make Scotland Great Again

Build (Hadrians) Wall

Mochudubh · 15/10/2023 14:22

On the other hand I thought Chris Pine was surprisingly good as Bruce in Outlaw King.

That's probably more suited to a thread about actors in roles that were more convincing than you thought they'd be.

Cropcycle · 15/10/2023 14:35

George Clooney in anything serious that requires showing emotion.

Jodie Whittaker as Dr Who.

SiobhanSharpe · 15/10/2023 14:39

I thought Hugh Grant was good in Paddington 2 -- outrageously hammy but wonderfully villainous. And clearly enjoying it hugely, so to speak.

The audience got up and cheered when he was on horseback and rallying the troops to fight where I live so must have been reasonably believable.

@Mochudubh -i suspected WW was educated but couldn’t be bothered to google -thanks for info.

Eddie Izzard in anything ... and everything from his role as leader of The Furries in Mystery Men to running around after Aryan teen girls on the beach in his English tweed three-piece suit and little brown Brogues .
I always think 'oh look , there's Eddie Izzard trying to do acting' .
He's such a disappointment .

He’s even crap in cars 2. And that’s just voice acting.

There’s an infuriating line at the end where he refers to mater as ‘the lorry’. No British person would refer to that kind of vehicle as a lorry.

Yes, it’s the scriptwriter’s fault but izzard could have had the integrity to address it and say something that isn’t deeply irritating.

beguilingeyes · 15/10/2023 15:49

Jodie Whittaker might have been better with some decent scripts, Chibnall is a hack. There were also too many dull companions IMO.
Thank god RTD is back.

Nicole Kidman is a great actress, but she's had so much work done to her face, I can't take her seriously anymore.

Which is a shame.

KK has never been a good actress. She has the right face/accent for some things, but she's not a great actress.

omg im the same wtf has she done her face doesnt move she cant do expressions she was so pretty
