Actors in roles that weren't all that convincing

And this is not an actor/actress bashing thread, an actor can be hit and miss depending on role, dialogue and other factors. And it's ok to agree to disagree.

Matt Smith is barely convincing as a human, he hasn’t got the range to stretch to extraterrestrial.

I’ve been saying that to dh for years! He reminds me of the two aliens in the cafe on Men in Black - the really tall one. I fully expect to pull his face off and there’s an alien prince inside.

Amara123 · 16/10/2023 13:49

Harry Styles in Don't Worry Darling. In the first scene he has with Florence Pugh, you can see a look of terror on his face when she starts acting and he realises that he has to do it too.
Florence just dwarfs him in every scene and you can see him looking in the wrong direction at times so he doesn't have to emote.

Jack reacher the series is great.

emma Watson was apparently very rude to the other cast and wouldn't talk to them when the day filming was done

Woah!

Oh, and Charlie Fairhead in Casualty.

Charlie of the singular facial expression. Go on, you can all picture it in your minds eye can’t you.

Emily Blunt as Mary Poppins.

I do appreciate that the poor woman had an impossible task to live up to Julie Andrews. Nevertheless, I thought it was bad.

i agree i usually like EB but noone and i mean noone else is mary poppins but julie andrews

But are we saying he was miscast? What exactly was that role exactly, beyond “stoic pillar of the department”? He played it perfectly, assuming his directions were “you are basically a piece of furniture”.

Or even worse, Heston as Cardinal Richelieu. Absolutely bloody ridiculous, even in something as stupid as the Three Musketeers.

Sorry, have to disagree, I thought Heston was one of the best things in it.

So badly cast...

Our poor eyes...

Maybe because she played Irene, not Fleur Grin

I might have believed her as Fleur, just about. But she was far too sharp-nosed and angular for the ethereal Irene.

So much wrong with the FS remake. Including, while we’re about it, Damian Lewis as Soames.

BravelyThroughTheDragonsEye · 16/10/2023 13:17

@Catsmere Hang on, the 1970s Musketeers might be daft but it is otherwise flawlessly cast. I don't think CH is dreadful in it, though.

No, I simply loathe the story because I love the real history of the time. I would never have cast Heston even as Dumas’ caricature of Richelieu.

Butteredtoast55 · 16/10/2023 20:48

@groovergirl how I love the Ananda Root adaptation of Persuasion. It's so subtle and beautifully done.

Violetparis · 16/10/2023 21:58

I've just been watching Cobra and think Jane Horrocks is dreadful in it.

whatausername · 16/10/2023 22:02

Brad Pitt in the Ocean's films

Just thought of another one - Kenneth Branagh as Hercule Poirot. Just no!

ITA! Murder on the Orient Express was nearly unwatchable

GellerYeller · 16/10/2023 22:46

I always assumed that the brothers in Frasier were some sort of attempt to shoe horn in vaguely well known actors in cameos(Robbie Coltrane and Richard E Grant). Anthony la Paglia was the third one, not sure where he’s from! Was it some sort of ‘in joke’? And Daphne’s dad was Brian Cox, her mum was Millicent Martin; so a real mix, although those two did attempt the accent. I believe the actor playing Martin was born in Blackpool? Isn’t Jane Leeves from East Grinstead? As you can tell, I love Frasier!

JFDIYOLO · 16/10/2023 23:27

The Daphne's brothers thing in Frasier happened after Australian actor Anthony LaPaglia was cast as the first brother and did the only English accent he could do. After it was 'noticed' they went with it and had all the others do different accents for fun.

I love Frasier ... watched it all when it was new and maybe three time round since.

So looking forward to the new series - with a mixture of anticipation and trepidation ... Please please please let it be good

GellerYeller · 16/10/2023 23:56

@JFDIYOLO ooh! That’s interesting, I didn’t know that. Thanks! I’m also waiting for the new series to be complete before signing up. I shall miss Niles though. And Lilith. All my favourite episodes feature Lilith!

beguilingeyes · 17/10/2023 06:45

@JFDIYOLO I have heard good things. I'm tentatively hopeful after being very unsure.
I saw Kelsey Grammar as Georges in La Cage Aux Folles on Broadway opposite Douglas Hodge and he was bloody amazing.

Kingsleadhat · 17/10/2023 10:04

I thought the first episode of the reboot was awful. The script didn't have the wit or depth of the original and it had an annoying laughter track. The second was a bit better. I've read a couple of reviews that say it really improves after four episodes so I'll stick with it. I always thought Niles was the best thing in it and they've brought in his son David as a fussy almost Sheldon Cooper type. But David Hyde Piece is a very tough act to follow.

SenecaFallsRedux · 17/10/2023 14:01

it had an annoying laughter track

It's done in front of a live audience, but I supposed they could have added canned laughter. I saw the first episode, which I thought was a bit underwhelming, but I'm hopeful for the remainder.

SecretVictoria · 17/10/2023 19:20

Jane Leeves was born in Ilford. I have no idea why if they had to make Daphne come from Manchester they couldn’t get an actress who was either a) from that area or b) could do a convincing northern accent.

John Mahoney went to live in the states when he was 18. He didn’t want to be marked out for his English accent when he joined the US army and spoke with an American accent for the rest of his life.

The introduction of the Moon family was a low point for me. Particularly how Gert was allowed to work, which would never happen. Lapaglia’s accent is bloody awful, if that’s his best take on an English accent, I dread to think what his worst would be.

It's hard to tell sometimes because I think the audience are encouraged to laugh even when it's not very funny

Elijah Wood in any horror film. He was such a perfect, convincing hobbit that I can’t see him as anything else.

Its hard to see him as a born again football hooligan after Lord of the Rings. Yes it happened, somehow.

Indeed. I don't think he ever looked a co star in the eye, always the wall behind them
