Actors in roles that weren't all that convincing

And this is not an actor/actress bashing thread, an actor can be hit and miss depending on role, dialogue and other factors. And it's ok to agree to disagree.

Dh reads Lee Childs Reacher books Tom cruise gives him the rage!

Me too. Has he seen the TV series? It's great.

GellerYeller · 13/10/2023 17:20

Keira Knightley in Love Actually: ‘Munchies? Banoffee Pie? It’s all blue and wibbly. I look quite pretty’ Aaaaarrrggghhh!
Maybe it’s not her fault, it’s Richard Curtis’ script with more of his ‘shittety brickety’ nonsense. Noone speaks like that. Except, possibly, Richard Curtis.

GettingStuffed · 13/10/2023 17:23

Sean Connery in the Hunt for Red October

Emma Watson in Little Women. I don’t know why but she was the only unrealistic one.

The only thing I’ve really liked her in is a very young Hermione (because she was basically herself) and Beauty and the Beast.

i came on to say that what were disney thinking. cant act to save her life. apparently a nightmare on set as well

What was she like? I actually like her in that although physically she looked totally wrong.

DrCoconut · 13/10/2023 17:40

Quite a while ago now but Tom's midnight garden was ruined by casting a teenager as Tom. No amount of dressing him younger was going to make it work.

I thought her Beauty was a somewhat bossy prefect at a highly academic girls’ grammar…

I did think Rupert Grint was the only natural one of the three main child actors in the HP series, but it’s a big casting problem — they were casting 11 year olds to play 11 year olds, and (I assume) hoping they would develop as actors to meet the demands of the later films, because they realistically couldn’t recast the leads half way. Alan Rickman’s diaries are wonderfully bitchy about working with the kids.

I had an issue with Florence Pugh’s Amy in Little Women. She’s a brilliant actor, but looked far too mature to play Amy at 13, especially given her distinctive deep voice. By the Laurie courtship scenes, I was thinking he really didn’t deserve someone that sorted and intelligent, especially as played by Timothée Chalamet, who brought out all his dopy self-indulgence. I mean, I think that reading the novel too, but this adaptation made Amy falling for Laurie as unlikely as clever, resourceful Hermione falling for dimwit Ron.

Laurie did look like an absolute child I agree

Another vote for Tom Cruise in Jack Reacher. A mis-casting that will go down in history. Jack Reacher is “extremely tall, extremely broad, long-armed and long-legged” with “hands the size of dinner plates.” Reacher is supposed to be visibly scary, 6'5" tall and muscular. Tiny Tom on the other hand... 😅

FartNRoses · 13/10/2023 17:55

ifchocolatewerecelery · 13/10/2023 07:11

Anything with Tom Cruise in these days. Mission Impossible is basically a vehicle for him to do any stunt he fancies. His Reacher was basically his MI character transferred to a different universe.

Totally agree. Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher was so wrong on so many levels!
For anyone who has read the books, it was such a disappointing casting.
But I do love him in the majority of his other films.

John Malkovich in anything. He sounds like a Speak and Spell.

Thanks I'll let him know.

ValBiro · 13/10/2023 18:03

@IsGoodIsDon yes, I came on the thread to say Anne Hathaway in One Day! I loved that book and wish I hadn't seen the film to ruin my memory of it!

Emma was meant to be fairly plain/average, a bit chubby, a sensible northern lass with a no nonsense attitude... Not a lithe, beautiful, delicate-featured American woman!

whynotwhatknot · 13/10/2023 18:10

Jack reacher the series is great.

emma Watson was apparently very rude to the other cast and wouldn't talk to them when the day filming was done

Thmssngvwlsrnd · 13/10/2023 18:14

Emma Watson ruins everything she's in. She just can't act.

JudyGemstone · 13/10/2023 18:23

Lampzade · 13/10/2023 15:47

Sofia Coppola in Godfather 3 . Absolutely painful to watch. She couldn’t even ‘die’ convincingly.

She’s definitely a much better director than she was an actor

Tortiemiaw · 13/10/2023 08:16

Emma Watson in Beauty and the Beast. Bloody awful. And you just knew she was probably really snotty and 'don't come near me' to the rest of the cast.

I can't abide her in anything!

I know people who worked on that film, and yes she was very snotty with the crew.

@Splitscreened - interesting, I'm in the minority who much preferred Gambon to Harris as Dumbledore.

I love Gambon as Dumbledore!!

Emma Wooden Watson thank you for making me laugh out loud @muchalover !

Nicole Kidman in Moulin Rouge.
The man and woman in the main police roles in Irvine Welsh's Crime series.

Bonnie wright as ginny in the Harry Potter films. Ginny in the books is so sparky and feisty, in the films she’s so wooden and zero chemistry between her and Radcliffe.

So agree with this! I always thought Karen Gillan would be perfect as Ginny!
