Actors in roles that weren't all that convincing

And this is not an actor/actress bashing thread, an actor can be hit and miss depending on role, dialogue and other factors. And it's ok to agree to disagree.

I am amazed no-one has yet mentioned the abomination that is Mel Gibson in Braveheart.

I remember when I was holidaying in Scotland in 2000 that I would never watch Braveheart, and the woman I was talking to said "Oh, it was quite popular here - as a comedy."

Oh come on, he was about as convincingly Scottish as Donald Trump. In fact Donald Trump also ticks the “loud angry stupid man with a grudge“ boxes, and probably wouldn’t have been any worse Grin

Imagine Donny trying to do a Scottish accent 😆

It would have been the best ever Scottish accent in the history of the world

Karen Gillan in Dr Who. Just constant SHOUTING. She’s fine in other things though, somehow.

David Tennant in anything serious. Just too hammy for it.

Chris Pine in Wonder Woman. Even though WW grew up on an island with no men, it still doesn’t make sense that she’d get so moony over that one.

John Hannah in Sliding Doors. A romantic lead he is not.

Catsmere · 15/10/2023 23:02

Peter Davison, Colin Baker, Matt Smith and Jodie Whittaker as the Doctor.

Gwendimarco · 15/10/2023 23:23

Emily Blunt as Mary Poppins.

I do appreciate that the poor woman had an impossible task to live up to Julie Andrews. Nevertheless, I thought it was bad.

Gwendimarco · 15/10/2023 23:28

Oh, and Charlie Fairhead in Casualty.

beguilingeyes · 16/10/2023 07:48

Would you like to step outside?! I love Matt Smith. He's my favourite Doctor after Tom. Instantly looked like an old man in a young body. Never could stand Tennant though

The Americans loved Braveheart though didn't they. Someone I know thinks that that's why they got their own parliament.,

LOL I liked Tennant. Started with Tom Baker in my teens but my favourite is Pertwee.

Kingsleadhat · 16/10/2023 11:23

All of Daphne's brothers in Frasier. Weird fake cockney accents when they were supposed to be from Manchester. Daphne in Frasier. I thought she was the one cast member who could have been replaced and it wouldn't have mattered. Nicola Walker in anything. That thing where she stops in the middle of every sentence and does a joyless smile like she's just remembered she's in a gurning competition

ITA re Smith.
I liked Tennant as The Doctor, except for the fact that the role should never remotely have got into 'Romantic lead' territory.

ErrolTheDragon · 16/10/2023 11:43

Re Frasier - it's one of life's small unsolved mysteries how a shoe with such a sharp script and main performances could have such shoddy casting of minor roles.

Yes, couldn't agree more re: romantic lead. The whole River Song storyline (after her initial appearance) ... no, just no. And Rose, of course.

bananasplitsarefab · 16/10/2023 11:53

Charlton Heston as Sherlock Holmes in 1991 - whaaaat ? He should stick to flying jumbos and racing chariots.

The only proper Sherlock Holmes was Jeremy Brett in the series 1984-1985 (ITV)

Catsmere · 16/10/2023 11:54

Or even worse, Heston as Cardinal Richelieu. Absolutely bloody ridiculous, even in something as stupid as the Three Musketeers.

Catsmere · 16/10/2023 11:55

Oh and Tom Baker as Holmes in the Hound of the Baskervilles. You have got to be kidding me.

I agree. Remember that awful one with Clive and his sub-Dick Van Dyke Cockerney accent?

spitefulandbadgrammar · 16/10/2023 12:30

Matt Smith is barely convincing as a human, he hasn’t got the range to stretch to extraterrestrial.

Alstroemeria123 · 16/10/2023 12:32

Just thought of another one - Kenneth Branagh as Hercule Poirot. Just no!

I don't find that at all, I find him very charismatic and engaging. I think these threads really just prove how subjective these things are.

enidine · 16/10/2023 12:38

I would agree. I can just picture him now.

BravelyThroughTheDragonsEye · 16/10/2023 13:17

@Catsmere Hang on, the 1970s Musketeers might be daft but it is otherwise flawlessly cast. I don't think CH is dreadful in it, though.
