Actors in roles that weren't all that convincing

And this is not an actor/actress bashing thread, an actor can be hit and miss depending on role, dialogue and other factors. And it's ok to agree to disagree.

So agree with you @Ellmauabout Billie Piper in Mansfield Park! I do like BP in the right role, but this was not one. Have you seen the BBC 1983 version? Sylvestra Le Touzel is very good as Fanny -- pale, reticent, unsexy, a bit traumatised by her awful early life.
As a feminist, I am not a fan of remaking Austen heroines as "feisty modern women". I think it is very useful to understand how women lived and adapted themselves to those times, as JA showed us. Have you seen Persuasion, with Amanda Root as Anne? It is such a sensitive adaptation, depicting the times yet with the psychological heft that engages us.

I watched the 1983 MP but I was only 13 so probably missed some of the finer points.

Amanda Root was the definitive Anne.

Keira Knightly in anything, gurning away but she was particularly bad in Pride and Prejudice. Why on earth did she get that role?

I particularly disliked her in Pride and Prejudice. She made an awful Elizabeth. It was really poor casting.

isthismylifenow · 13/10/2023 19:05

Leo DiCaprio in Blood Diamond.

He cannot pull off a South African accent. Actually I am not sure many actors can come to think of it.

But that one he was truly terrible in.

Anne Hathaway in One Day.

Agreed. I was so disappointed as I loved the book. I cast Anna Maxwell Martin as Emma, who’s totally different in every role she plays

Thanks I'll let him know.

Your husband is in for a treat

Nicholas Cage in Captain Corelli's Mandolin. It's a bad film in which everyone is bad, but he is especially bad.

Oh, I agree. Bloody awful film! Fabulous book though.

I like the rock but he usually plays very one dimensional characters, maybe he is type cast idk 🤷‍♀️

I liked that film where he played the big man who could fight all the other men

Amazon Prime

Reacher is glorious. It follows the book exactly and has eight episodes so has time to tell the story. I'm just sad that they're not doing the second book next as that's my favourite.
And Reacher is this guy.

I hate her underbite. It drives me mad.

NumberFortyNorhamGardens · 13/10/2023 21:24

To be fair to Bonnie Wright (Ginny in the HP films) I think she realised her future wasn’t in acting. If only one or two of the leads had done the same.

LuisVitton · 13/10/2023 08:50

Hugh Grant was brill as Jeremy Thorpe on the TV prog. Inhibited toffs is his best role.

He was great in that.

Ameanstreakamilewide · 13/10/2023 21:37

Otterock · 13/10/2023 09:34

Bonnie wright as ginny in the Harry Potter films. Ginny in the books is so sparky and feisty, in the films she’s so wooden and zero chemistry between her and Radcliffe.

That girl cannot act. Emma Watson isn't much better.

AIBAnxious · 13/10/2023 21:38

Nicole Kidman in the Golden Compass. Thankfully they cast Ruth Wilson in the BBC version who was amazing!

Daniel Craig in Defiance ... and in the Golden Compass too now I think of it.

Also totally agree about Keira Knightly in Pride and Prejudice.

So agree with this! I always thought Karen Gillan would be perfect as Ginny!

Oh my goodness, she would be perfect! Too old now, but then, definitely.

Amanda Root was incredible in the Forsyte Saga remake too. Such an underrated, under used actress.

Pudmyboy · 14/10/2023 07:37

Brad Pitt and Tommy Lee Jones as his father on Ad Astra: completely implausible as a premise and Brad cannot do serious/moody/tortured; bloody awful film aa a consequence and I say that as a Sci-Fi fan!

LuisVitton · 14/10/2023 07:58

Wrong thread

Loopytiles · 14/10/2023 07:59

Liked most things about the BBC adaptation of His Dark Materials, but didn’t find the lead actor playing Lyra convincing for the role.

James McEvoy also wrong for Asriel, the man playing Lord Boreal would have been far better.

beguilingeyes · 14/10/2023 11:44

Timothy Dalton was a much better Asriel.

Edited

I never thought of that but yes Lord Boreal would have been a much better Asriel!

Oh Daniel Radcliffe, obviously. Three facial expressions on rotation.

Two more than Kristen Stewart and Natalie Portman.

Ameanstreakamilewide · 14/10/2023 12:28

Nicole Kidman is a great actress, but she's had so much work done to her face, I can't take her seriously anymore.

Which is a shame.

KK has never been a good actress. She has the right face/accent for some things, but she's not a great actress.

I liked her as Elizabeth. Matthew Mcfadyen was wooden though.

Kate Winslet in Titanic. Just the wrong fit for the role
