What on earth is a global day of jihad?

please tell me this means peaceful protests in city squares: not a day of violence

I think it’s bad news for innocent civilians on both sides of the conflict.

I expect the peaceful factions will have peaceful protests, (probably hijacked by wankers who just want a scrap) and all the terrorist types will use it as an excuse to blow shit up.

It's a dog whistle intended to destabilise communities everywhere, by making people in western countries fear that there is a fifth column of waiting terrorists disguised as friends and neighbours. It's supposed to cause division and mistrust - don't let it.

I think Hamas were hoping that their massacre of Israeli civilians would trigger a general anti-Israel and anti-Western uprising. But it seems to have failed. Even their allies Hezbollah aren't joining the melee, and Israeli Arabs are keeping their heads down (obviously, as they are far better off under Israeli rule than under some maniacal Islamic regime). So the only people supporting what Hamas did are performative Western lefties, which tells you something....

Apparently Jihad has several meanings and various rules, although I'm not sure many are followed!

The rules of Jihad

• The opponent must always have started the fighting.
• It must not be fought to gain territory.
• It must be launched by a religious leader.
• It must be fought to bring about good - something that Allah will approve of.
• Every other way of solving the problem must be tried before resorting to war.

They do keep trying don't they? One day there'll be enough of them to see it through unfortunately.

Another version of the story, hoping that others will join in... hopefully for the world they won't. The vast majority of muslims are peace loving and so he is calling on the radical and terror groups.

I think the situation is so dangerous, the appalling tragedies inflicted by terrorists should be condemned by all . The suggestion of this day just confirms that the world is dealing with a highly dangerous group which are out to create a volatile situation - world peace is in danger.

His call was for those in Arab and Islamic nations to go out into the streets and support the Palestinians. Jihad doesn't only mean war. Jihad means strength and effort to effect an action.

Don't get me wrong, I am sure he would gladly erase Israel but this isn't a call for a global Islamic war on Friday. It is a call to protest.

They aren't. They are telling people to take to the streets in protest of Israel and in support of Palestine.

It isn't semantics. The word doesn't mean and can't be understood in every context as war. Just because jihad can be a war doesn't mean jihad is a war.

the misunderstanding, misappropriation and misuse of the word jihad is symbolic of how Islam is misunderstood by both Muslims and non Muslims and often certain theological texts are taken out of context and either weaponised by so called muslims or bandied around in the right wing press as a way of spreading further misinformation and increasing division and hatred.

there is the small jihad which is fighting against oppressors and comes with very strict rules such as no attack on civilians and protecting civilian women and children of the other side, not destroying homes/farm land/fruit trees or crops of any kind. not attacking animals etc. etc.

then there is the big jihad which is fighting one's own ego to become selfless, purify one's heart and intentions, to not be fixated on the material world and personal development and realisation. this is much harder.

Indeed. Only we all have to keep pretending it's all fine and not worry at all about undocumented migrant men pulling up on our beaches, lest we be appear to be bigoted/Islamophobic.

After the attacks at the weekend and the multiple demonstrations supporting said attacks, Jewish children being told not to wear their blazers to school for fear of drawing unwanted aggression, kosher restaurant being vandalised, Israel flag flying in solidarity being removed by a masked individual and the Palestine flag replacing it in Sheffield and now a call to arms for all Muslims wherever they may be, you really think this is a "ridiculous" concern and not worth discussing sensibly?
