Fire at Luton airport

Is anyone due to travel from Luton in the next day or so? Just saw news of the fire which looks awful. Heard nothing yet from Ryanair but not sure how responsive they are in this sort of situation...

Did see flights be suspended until around 4ish today..

LadyJaneEarlGreyTea · 11/10/2023 08:14

I wonder if it was a Tesla that caught fire?

TheFeistyFeminist · 11/10/2023 08:23

The EV charging points are in the other car park.

While a Tesla or any other EV may have been parked up in this car pro, don't forget that most cars in that car park have a tank of petrol or diesel as well as oil, brake fluid etc.

Yes we're supposed to be flying from Luton tomorrow morning. Im feeling anxious about the limbo we're in at the moment.

LadyJaneEarlGreyTea · 11/10/2023 08:26

Most petrol or diesel vehicles don’t seem to spontaneously combust while reports suggest that it is a risk with batteries hence my pondering

PuttingDownRoots · 11/10/2023 08:27

As awful as it is for people having trips being cancelled, must be worse for those on holiday currently not knowing how they are getting home or if their car has been damaged or destroyed.

Waxlyrically · 11/10/2023 08:30

Why would it specifically be a Tesla? It is suggested (not confirmed) that it was a Range Rover which, given the vast fuel tank, is possible.

nothingevergoesright · 11/10/2023 08:35

Wow! Let me find my tiny violin for those of you who are travelling soon, you've not lost anything!

My DH and DSS are in Krakow right now, their flight back is at 1pm today, so fuck knows what's gonna happen.

What's worse is my DH parked our jag (which we bought with a gift of money and cannot replace) in the multi-storey car park which has gone up!!!!!

I am furious he took the jag tbh and unfortunately when he phoned me to tell me I blamed him for taking it, so his son went in 'luxury', when the airport is 20 odd miles and he could have taken our little car....what a stupid fucking prat DH is!

Then he parked in the multi-storey, when we've always parked in the outside one as it was 'closer'.

His son needs to be back home in Doncaster for work on Friday and his coach back is tomorrow night, so fuck knows how he's going to get back, not sure how they'll get back from the airport and not sure when they'll be able to fly back..

I assume you’re insured? And why shouldn’t he have taken the jag? How was he meant to know? And how do you know why people are flying today. Could be a funeral, wedding, receive hospital treatment.

Reports like this made me think of a Tesla.

Range Rover has an electric range, maybe it was a battery fire from that vehicle?

I didn’t think that suggesting a battery fire and naming the most famous EV brand would be so controversial!

maybe more coffee is needed

Tesla catches fire and 22,000 litres of water are needed to put it out

Find out how often electric cars catch fire after this major incident across the Atlantic

Why wouldn't you claim on your car insurance?

I get that you're upset but dismissing other posters with your tiny violin is out of order. People could equally say that about your Jag.

Nice to see a bit of empathy there eh? I'd be more thinking thank God no one died in that horrendous fire!

🤦🏼‍♀️

I read that hybrids are the most likely to catch fire and that the lithium ion batteries act as a fuel source so can burn for hours and be difficult to put out. There have been loads of recalls of electric and hybrid cars for being fire risks as well. Will be interesting to see what sort of car it is.

PP I'm with you, why would anyone take a Jag to park at an airport. Claiming on insurance for anything generally puts the cost of insurance up as well and they're often reluctant to pay out and will try to get out of it or pay as little as possible that they can. We had a car that OH drove 50 miles to work everyday, we were hit by a van coming round a corner. The insurance said that they would only pay for superficial damage as the other damage (that meant the car didn't work) was already there (it wasn't).

listsandbudgets · 11/10/2023 08:49

Come on people - @nothingevergoesright is understandably really upset and worried. I'm sure she can claim on insurance but we all know that its a time consuming process and will no doubt result in huge ongoing premiums. Her DH and DSS are stuck with all the associated costs that entails - another insurance claim. OK "tiny violin" may be a bit over the top but she deserves a bit of compassion surely?

I'm sorry for all of you whose holidays and other flights have been affected, what a horrible thing to wake up to

Newgirls · 11/10/2023 08:50

It’s going to be so complicated to remove the cars and building. Isn’t it the place where people get dropped off and picked up too? A logistical nightmare for the airport.

PS just glanced at the airport website but there is a queue to access it - currently about 8 minutes so if you need information in a rush, I suggest you get into the queue now. I closed the tab because it was curiosity for me and I know lots of people actually need to see.

If you actually read that article you would see

“numerous reports have shown fires in electric vehicles are far less likely than in their combustion engine counterparts”

so yes more coffee is needed.

it could be an EV. It’s more likely that it wasn’t.

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 11/10/2023 08:55

Bedfordshire fire have posted on their Facebook flights are suspended until 3.00 today

nothingevergoesright · 11/10/2023 08:57

@listsandbudgets thank you. Maybe it was, but we have a run around car that needs so much work doing that it's not worth doing and is due to MOT'd next week, so we will scrap it.

We won't be able to afford another 'luxury' car. We saved up for it and got a gift when dad died (as did my sister - the grand total of £500), it cost £1700, so hardly a massive purchase.

I wish DH had taken the shit due to scrapped one and parked in the open air car park which he always does....but he was showing off to his fing son!
