I think most Conservatives stayed at home but ALL the Labour voters decided to vote no matter what.

That's obviously what happened.......

And even then Labour didn't really do well because actually their vote went down. And that's the truth because Greg Hands said so.

pointythings · 20/10/2023 19:59

Note how none of them are mentioning the Lib Dems at all, and how different it would have been if they had backed off and tacitly supported a tactical vote. Mid Beds should scare the shit out of the Tories.

itsgettingweird · 20/10/2023 20:34

Let's hope the GE is on a sunny day, they lose and we get a brand new bingo card to play with that doesn't blame the rain!

And the irony being it's the Tory's who always call out "snowflakes" 🙄

Tory voters dissolve in the rain.

maybe Rishi needs to go to Starmer’s hairdresser for a new haircut.

It is scaring the shit out of the Tories - well any sensible ones anyway. Hence the wafer thin excuses.

Not going to lie. I am SO looking forward to Dorries next work of fiction.

A thread worth a few seconds of your time. Fun times at CCHQ. 😂

"A few messages I've received from Conservative MPs in response to the by elections:

"The problem with the PM is while he may be a first rate academic he is a fifth rate politician. He does not connect, he has the leadership qualities of an amoeba."

x.com/sophyridgesky/status/1715445358887645595?s=46&t=Uw4lJNwxFZFnX0Xs3doHYg

RafaistheKingofClay · 20/10/2023 22:20

Maybe the problem was that the people did want a meat tax and 7 bins.

InMySpareTime · 21/10/2023 06:33

Why stop at 7? We want Meat Bins! More bins, bins for Britain!

Cheguevarahamster · 21/10/2023 06:40

"The problem with the PM is while he may be a first rate academic he is a fifth rate politician. He does not connect, he has the leadership qualities of an amoeba."

🤣🤣🤣

itsgettingweird · 21/10/2023 06:48

I'm still ploughing through that thread.

But just wanted to say what a fantastic contribution posters from here have given so far.

Factual, calm and well thought out responses to attempts to sway fact through one liners that don't give context.

Something tells me this is a skill that will need to be refined in the run up to the GE when it happens.

As an aside has anyone noticed recently the increase in one line responses to a body of factual text in a desperation to post something, anything - that makes the Tory's look less like a shower a shite?

I've always been honest I'm a centric voter with some left and some right (stereotypical) views. But I'm finding it fascinating that those who are clearly affiliated to the conservatives cannot see that no one thinks things like immigration etc need sorting. They just don't agree with how they've handled it, can't see they have a workable cost effective solution to handle it and they only thing they can sell their party over about their handling if it is - Labour would be worse 🤦‍♀️

Personally I couldn't give a flying monkeys which party sorted out the state of this country. I'd just like one I can trust to actually do it. And the current lying shower of shite that is the current Tory party are absolutely categorically and fundamentally imo NOT the party to do it.

(Rant over - sorry Blush)

Notonthestairs · 21/10/2023 07:09

Some very poor losers on that thread.

I'm fascinated by the Truss supporters. They aren't openly claiming Truss but generally proposing Truss style policies - obviously tax cuts but with no mention of what services they'd cut. Also fostering the idea that wealthy people will leave us high and dry - as if they pay tax here anyway. And blaming the lazy public for tax credits.

And all that time refusing to mention that the Conservatives have been in charge for 13 years!

I've no doubt Hunt will now have to cut taxes. Sunaks got nothing else in his armoury. Heaven knows where that will leave NHS/education/transport etc.

Missed loads of stuff this week - vomiting bug, I've either been cleaning it up or doing it myself. Rife at kids school. Between that and Covid I'm amazed anyone (especially staff) are still standing!

Zonder · 21/10/2023 07:54

.Sunak's got nothing else in his armoury.

And I'm not even sure he realises he's supposed to have an armoury. He's a bit busy pretending to be a big player on the world stage.

Rough week @Notonthestairs - hope you have better weekend.

I expect Suank was hurt by the digs at him for not going to the UN in September, and so is wandering about trying to find someone who will talk to him.

Zonder · 21/10/2023 08:21

Yes! Ian Hislop was brilliant on this on HIGNfY last night.

'... while he may be a first rate academic ..' On what basis is he an academic of any rate? He doesn't have a phd and he's never taught at a university.

Oh now you're just nit-picking, expecting academic to mean academic.

Notonthestairs · 21/10/2023 10:24

Here we go, Guardian reporting Sunak considering tax cuts for top earners.

"The Daily Telegraph reported that surveys have been carried out by Downing Street to ascertain which tax reduction could give the party the biggest political pre-election boost with the 2024 spring budget considered the earliest it could be announced."

Obviously choices are made solely on basis of what benefits the party rather than the country.

Thanks Zonder.

DuncinToffee · 21/10/2023 10:30

A lot of Truss and Thatcher love on that thread.

The Times is reporting these tax cuts

Exclusive:

Senior Conservatives are weighing up an ‘aspirational’ pledge to slash stamp duty next year for Tory manifesto

It’s one of two major tax cuts being considered as the Tory tax offer - the other is abolishing inheritance tax

He's the gift that keeps giving. I didn't think he could be funnier than the Cummings episode but he proves me wrong weekly!

MrTiddlesTheCat · 21/10/2023 11:46

This is very sinister. DoE monitoring the social media output of all employees and keeping files on those who share any anti-government sentiment. How much money is being syphoned out of actual education to pay for this surveillance?

Bingo card for you all.

A memory of an interview with Shirley Williams after a big Labour defeat always sticks in my mind, mostly because it's something you would never hear from this lot. Her response was essentially"Yes, it's a bloody awful result, we have to listen to the voters and pay attention to it". It all feels quite nostalgic, really.

Tradition always has it that bad weather favours the Tories, due to being able to go out to the vote in their nice warm cars. But maybe the current economic mess has changed all that.

Sunak is just desperately casting around for one tactic after another. First it was the boats, then post Uxbridge it was car drivers. It's really quite gratifying that these result demonstrate that voters aren't as stupid or as selfish as Sunak would like to think they are. Tax cuts will get some Conservatives back into the fold, but clearly not enough to turn things around for him.
