Dark. Rural

Taking the wheely bin to the road (down the drive) , torch in hand

Bin lid not closed properly as it’s quite full

Pulling the bin behind me

A rat. A fucking RAT runs out of the bin, up my arm, over my shoulder and down my back.

Christ I can still feel it. I screamed like a pathetic idiot, threw the wheely bin on the floor and ran inside. The rat was running ALONGSIDE ME

Christ I’m never going outside again

Can’t compete with this, but reminds me of the time when I was about 10 and had been told to take a bag outside to the bin. Approached the bin and a big bastard of a raccoon (this was not in England, FYI) jumped out from behind the bin store and ran at me. I was beside myself for hours. When I went to bed there was a fat centipede waiting for me in the bedroom. I still shudder thinking about it.

Photographsandmemories · 05/10/2023 22:42

I think rats are cute, but I probably would have yelped from the suddenness of it

BrokenBonesStixStones · 05/10/2023 22:42

Awh wee rats are cute 🙈 just disinfect well

now spiders, that would get a similar reaction out of me

RainbowZebraWarrior · 05/10/2023 22:42

Ooh, cross posted with Valbiro

Ninjettea · 05/10/2023 22:43

Similar happened to DH last year. We live in the arse end of nowhere and we have to drag our bin down the drive to the road. I was watching from the kitchen window when a squirrel came out of the bin and ran up his arm and over his shoulders, the bin ended up on its side with DH doing an odd sort of dance and screaming while the squirrel clung on to his shoulder, the wee thing was swinging around. I ran outside with a brush but by the time I got there it had let go. The tears were literally running down my face laughing. DH was furious (his male pride was dented I think). I still refer to that night as the the evening DH did the squirrel dance and the OP’s post has me sniggering away to myself. I was banned from feeding the squirrels from that day…

They carry so many diseases as I discovered after 2 injections!

ThePoshUns · 05/10/2023 22:46

Aaahhhhhhhh! I would have screamed too.

Lifeomars · 05/10/2023 22:46

I just posted about getting jabbed against whatever disease it might be carrying and then realised that it did not bite you! Such is my fear and revulsion of them that my mind just leapt to the worst case scenario. Ugh, I need to go and do something else and stop thinking about this

AdoraBell · 05/10/2023 22:47

Oh my god that’s horrendous. Have a large 🍷/gin/Brew

<runs from thread screaming >

This! Yes they are cute and intelligent but they spend a lot of time hanging around in sewers and bins! I’ll happily handle a pet rat, but not a wild one.

MrsDanversChickenSandwich · 05/10/2023 22:47

Did it run down your top or over your top?

Over your top isn't great, but I feel I'd develop a permanent twitch if it had actually scampered down my top en-route to the ground.

Ingles2 · 05/10/2023 22:48

OMG you poor thing! that's horrific and my nightmare atm... we too are rural and are struggling with rats this year... first time ever in 23yrs. I think it's because the open farmland around us has been given over to rewilding / bird feed for the last couple of years, so no cultivation and they've moved in. I've seen a few dead on the road, and have seen mink and foxes eating them. As for going to war,.. I've got all the snap traps out (no use, we just catch mice) 12 bait boxes around the house and outbuildings, and just clearing everything I can. please let me know what you try and if it works .

madeinmanc · 05/10/2023 22:48

Stick all the clothes you were wearing straight in the wash with some Dettol and have a thorough shower.

I empathise, OP. When living in a dingy student flat, a mouse ran over my face and through my hair as I was semi-asleep. For a few moments, I thought I’d dreamt it- until I sat up and found droppings on my pillow 😱

That happened to my mum when she was a child. My grandparents were very clean people but always had mice in their houses. My mum wasn't afraid of mice until that particular encounter.
I'm absolutely terrified of mice and rats. I have just informed DH I'm not touching our wheelie bin ever again so at least that's a job I no longer have to do.

JackieO22 · 05/10/2023 22:51

I live in a suburban area, so shocked that the rat didn't run off but bit me! Becoming more fearless I guess

madeinmanc · 05/10/2023 22:51

People saying they are cute are naive as hell, they are one of the biggest causes of house fires!

TheaBrandt · 05/10/2023 22:52

That was a tough read op - just - no words. I am almost phobic about rats if one was on me I can’t even go there. You must never do the bin job again.

Hawkins0009 · 05/10/2023 22:52

@KimmyChi sorry op, but omg, i can understand your perspectives,

from chewing cables I presume rather than lighting candles and leaving them unattended.

They are often very heavy smokers tbf

Pallisers · 05/10/2023 22:00

I'm screaming and I'm an ocean away from you.

Me also - and I'm on the other side of the world!!

This is the stuff of nightmares - hope you had a stiff drink to get over it.

I could actually cope with a pet rat, but not a wild one.

AnonyLonnymouse · 05/10/2023 22:58

Hellocatshome · 05/10/2023 22:16

I once rescued a mouse from our cat, got it in a box and took it to a nice grassy area to release it. Where it promptly ran up the inside of my trouser leg and was scrabbling about near my crotch. The only thing for it was to quickly remove my trousers and shake the little bugger out. This was a public location and I hate to think who saw me standing in my pants flapping my trousers about like a loon.

Sales of skinny jeans will re-surge after the population of Mumsnet reads that!

Rattatoille · 05/10/2023 22:58

People who take part in Iron Man events are at risk of Leptospirosis (Weil's disease) from rat's urine while swimming in lakes/open water. They wear wetsuits, but can not cover their eyes nose and mouth. Can you imagine the pathogens in open water which can not be cleaned?

Witchbitch20 · 05/10/2023 22:58

That is f’in horrendous.

I can only commend you for being able to run, as I’d still be there screaming, crying and probably peeing myself in terror.
