Dark. Rural

Taking the wheely bin to the road (down the drive) , torch in hand

Bin lid not closed properly as it’s quite full

Pulling the bin behind me

A rat. A fucking RAT runs out of the bin, up my arm, over my shoulder and down my back.

Christ I can still feel it. I screamed like a pathetic idiot, threw the wheely bin on the floor and ran inside. The rat was running ALONGSIDE ME

Christ I’m never going outside again

Oh Jesus christ this is my worst nightmare.

thistimelastweek · 05/10/2023 22:15

I saw a rat in my house once. IN MY LIVING ROOM.

Of course it was an evening when my husband was out.

So I spent two hours rooted to my chair, legs raised, singing loudly and clapping my hands till my husband came home.

KimmyChi · 05/10/2023 22:16

mice I can just about stomach. We have a shrew(s) which is regularly seen in the house.

But rats - fucking rats - I’m going to war with them tomorrow.

Made DS go out and pick the bin up off the road. He kicked it a few times for good measure first

I empathise, OP. When living in a dingy student flat, a mouse ran over my face and through my hair as I was semi-asleep. For a few moments, I thought I’d dreamt it- until I sat up and found droppings on my pillow 😱

JaneyGee · 05/10/2023 22:16

Oddly, rats have never bothered me that much. (Don’t get me wrong, OP, that was a horrible experience.) It’s spiders I truly loathe. If you’d told me a horror story involving spiders, or included a photo of a wolf spider, or something, I’d have had nightmares. I frequently DO have nightmares about the bloody things. Christ, I wish they didn’t exist.

Hellocatshome · 05/10/2023 22:16

I once rescued a mouse from our cat, got it in a box and took it to a nice grassy area to release it. Where it promptly ran up the inside of my trouser leg and was scrabbling about near my crotch. The only thing for it was to quickly remove my trousers and shake the little bugger out. This was a public location and I hate to think who saw me standing in my pants flapping my trousers about like a loon.

You need gin, chocolate, a bubble bath, fluffy towels and pjs.......and you need them now!!! 😨🙈🙊🙉

CosyCoffee · 05/10/2023 22:17

I'm sorry you had a fright OP. But I really don't get this fear at all! I like watching the rats at the park and I can't imagine being scared if one jumped on me, any more than if a cat did. I used to have a pet grey squirrel which some people found revolting.

I think you might just have beaten op. You win the Internet. And my nightmares.

Stat stat stat barstard phone

doctorinauniform · 05/10/2023 22:18

Sorry to victim blame but you brought that one on yourself.

Bin lid not shut? That's on you.

Take this experience and let it shape you into the kind of person that doesn't have a rat crawling up their shoulder FFS.

KimmyChi · 05/10/2023 22:18

It’s the feet. They have no business being that dis-proportionally sized

and then the tails

and the speed on those fuckers

OP posts:
Someoneonlyyouknow · 05/10/2023 22:19

I am worried your bin is not properly positioned for collection. But don't go back outside!!

Thedrownedprophet · 05/10/2023 22:19

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 05/10/2023 22:11

I honestly don't get the whole rat-fear thing. Spiders yes, but a rat, no.

The tail, the scuttling, the teeth that never stop growing the toxic urine that can fell a human or a beast....

GoddessOnTheHighway · 05/10/2023 22:20

My sister had s boyfriend who had a rat that lived on him. I'm not 💯 sure why (or how) but the boyfriend (and eat) moved into my student hall of residence for a few days.

I don't remember sleeping a wink for those days and the rat went nowhere near me.

I hope you have strong sleeping pills OP.

unmumsnetty hugs for your trauma

KimmyChi · 05/10/2023 22:21

I have googled. It’s not uncommon. There are many videos of bin men tangling with wheely bin rats even when the lid is closed!!

the council only come once every two weeks - it’s not that unreasonable for it to be full

OP posts:
Dolly567 · 05/10/2023 22:21

I would have screamed too! So glad it didn't bite! Shock

JackieO22 · 05/10/2023 22:22

I unkowingly disturbed a rat near our bin, it climbed over my foot then I obviously scared it, it turned and bit me, quite painful and drew blood as very sharp teeth. Gp advised me to have a tetanus ASAP, when I arrived I was also told I'd need another injection - an immunoglobulin one as immune system could be compromised! I did not expect that. Also given antibiotics for a week. Contacted pest control company who told us rats are everywhere! I shall be very careful around bins now..

nocoolnamesleft · 05/10/2023 22:22

That is very unpleasant, and I offer my sympathies. But I had to laugh at your daughter's suggestion!

dayswithaY · 05/10/2023 22:22

Sorry spider haters but last week I put on a pair of joggers that had been in a heap on my bedroom floor for a couple of days. After a couple of minutes wearing them, I could feel a tickle on my left leg.

A fat, hairy spider with giant legs was crawling out of the bottom of the material towards my ankle.

I’m not afraid of spiders but that was horrific. Don’t leave clothes on the floor in autumn, they’ll crawl inside them!

LittleBoxesOnAHillside · 05/10/2023 22:23

I thought this was something actually terrible.
You should send this to the daily mail, it's twee enough to satisfy their casual sexism.
I once saw a rat run under my shed then back out again. Fuck me, other species live alongside us, the horror of it.

Lottle · 05/10/2023 22:23

My then 2 year old picked up a dead rat once. But this sounds worse.

Aposterhasnoname · 05/10/2023 22:24

Jaysus, I spend a fair chunk of my working life looking for rats, and even I would have screamed the place down if that happened .

WinterDeWinter · 05/10/2023 22:24

Oh Jesus op, I empathise. Not nearly as bad, but I will never, EVER forget the sound of heavy rat claws scrambling across my wooden floor as the fucker ran from the front to the back of my tiny house, passing 2 feet away from my nine-month old baby who was sitting on the floor.
