Dark. Rural

Taking the wheely bin to the road (down the drive) , torch in hand

Bin lid not closed properly as it’s quite full

Pulling the bin behind me

A rat. A fucking RAT runs out of the bin, up my arm, over my shoulder and down my back.

Christ I can still feel it. I screamed like a pathetic idiot, threw the wheely bin on the floor and ran inside. The rat was running ALONGSIDE ME

Christ I’m never going outside again

OMG no stop that’s too much. I laughed when you said the rat was running alongisde you though I’m so sorry😭😭

Mariposista · 05/10/2023 22:27

Ughhhhh I'd have been the same as you OP. Absolutely hate them. Our cat used to hang out at the railway line near our house and stroll home with one in his mouth - not always dead neither.
Although FWIW your daughter sounds hilarious.

WetBandits · 05/10/2023 22:28

Aw, he just wanted a friend! Grin

Bonjovispjs · 05/10/2023 22:28

I used to work in an animal shelter and someone gave their pet rat up, I've got a pic of me holding it. It got rehomed too. I like them, but do understand your shock.

Rattatoille · 05/10/2023 22:30

Previous posters are wearing my name out !

No, despite being a rat in Chinese astrology, they are horrible, despicable disease carriers and should be eradicated from the earth.

I had a vegan friend who used to feed feral rats ! Her excuse was " rats have their place in the world like everything else". A rat's place is on a bonfire, enjoy your bath OP.

nopuppiesallowed · 05/10/2023 22:30

It just wanted to be friends.....

Fatcat00 · 05/10/2023 22:31

I’d be ill!!! Amputation is the only option 🤮

JoanThursday · 05/10/2023 22:31

Oh my. Anything smaller than a cat, and I'm not a fan.

We once had an injured rat leaning against our patio door staring in at us in the cold light of day. Must have come off the allotments at the back and had a run- in with next door's cat. Those red eyes staring at us while we were having our tea..😬

... but, yep, a rat wanting a piggy back would have me running for the hills.

Lesina · 05/10/2023 22:31

I like rats. Very intelligent and excellent mothers.

Dee1224 · 05/10/2023 22:32

That’s such a horrible thing to have happened @KimmyChi - you have my sympathies!

So weird that the rat ran with you - perhaps it thought you were screaming at something else and ran away too🤣

On a related note: I woke up one night to find a mouse in bed with me. After an emergency visit from Rentokil I did what any sane person would do: Ripped out the carpet and wardrobes, threw away the bed, bedding and curtains and washed every item of clothing at 60 degrees, (lots did shrink!)

According to Rentokil, a team of seven commando mice had come in for a recce via the drainpipe and roof due to the extreme cold.

I slept downstairs until new flooring, bed and fitted wardrobes had been installed.

To be fair, we had been going to redo the room, mouse gate just brought it forward. I wouldn’t be able to do the same nowadays, so I don’t know how I would cope if it happened again 😱.

Hopefully your rat will have the good sense to make itself scarce!

Contraryjane · 05/10/2023 22:32

I’ve given up alcohol, but now I’m thinking I should keep some emergency brandy in, in case this ever happens to me.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 05/10/2023 22:34

Never seen a rat in the flesh but fuck me I've seen a big toad with red eyes. Now that was sickening.

32notdeadyet · 05/10/2023 22:34

RIBU.

LadyAsnowt · 05/10/2023 22:35

A rat ran over my foot outside Tottenham Court Road Station last year. I was traumatised by the experience. When I got home and told DH all he said was, "which way was it going?"

CopperLion · 05/10/2023 22:36

CRIKEY. I once found a rat in the wheelie bin but this is a whole other level of hell. So sorry OP, home you have gin and a hot bath by now!!

uncomfortablydumb53 · 05/10/2023 22:37

OMG That is horrific! The last think you expect when you're absent mindedly wheeling your bin down the drive

10HailMarys · 05/10/2023 22:38

Oh, I really l like rats. This wouldn't bother me at all.

Can't stand spiders though. If one of those eight-legged bastards ran over my arm I'd probably have to have the entire limb amputated.

MsLavender · 05/10/2023 22:38

I feel for you, I'm the same with giant spiders and sadly its the season for them! I don't mind rats though which is lucky because when I moved in I found a family of them in the garden. Being the absolute sap that I am I got a humane trap, caught one almost immediately, I then had to carry the damn thing (I don't drive) over a mile away getting funny stares. I release it only to have pest control tell me it would make its way "home" because unless I literally take it miles and miles then it would come back. Then one crawled up my washing machine pipe so I had no choice but to opt fora less humane solution.

Then similarly to your story, put my bins out a couple of weeks ago and something scuttled off quickly so I went looking for it with my phone light because I needed to know if the rats were back but thankfully was just a little hedgehog.

Izzy54321 · 05/10/2023 22:39

My niece fell sleep with the back door open, when my niece woke up a big rat was on her head talk about screaming the neighbours thought something horrific had happened. Your incident which is also horrific and nightmare inducing, makes me want to pull out the steradent and peanut butter.

MsLavender · 05/10/2023 22:39

When I got home and told DH all he said was, "which way was it going?"

I love this!! 😂😂😂

Lifeomars · 05/10/2023 22:40

oh that is just horrific, I would be hysterical. You need to be checking out what jabs you might need. I am so sorry for you, I would have wet myself with fright, We have them round my way (inner city with lots of food rubbish due to take aways) and the mere sight of one scuttling in the street makes me almost heave.

FannyFifer · 05/10/2023 22:40

The rat running beside you though, ha ha ha.

ValBiro · 05/10/2023 22:40

@Reallybadidea Ratsnet has really tickled me, thank you for that! 😆

Playingintheshadow · 05/10/2023 22:40

LittleBoxesOnAHillside · 05/10/2023 22:23

I thought this was something actually terrible.
You should send this to the daily mail, it's twee enough to satisfy their casual sexism.
I once saw a rat run under my shed then back out again. Fuck me, other species live alongside us, the horror of it.

What is wrong with you?? It is something terrible!!

I'd probably have to burn my clothes and bleach my body, omg!!

RainbowZebraWarrior · 05/10/2023 22:41

Reallybadidea · 05/10/2023 22:13

I wonder what the rat thought about the whole thing 🤔 Probably posting about it on Ratsnet right now

Hee hee. Ratsnet. This has proper tickled me.
