Dark. Rural

Taking the wheely bin to the road (down the drive) , torch in hand

Bin lid not closed properly as it’s quite full

Pulling the bin behind me

A rat. A fucking RAT runs out of the bin, up my arm, over my shoulder and down my back.

Christ I can still feel it. I screamed like a pathetic idiot, threw the wheely bin on the floor and ran inside. The rat was running ALONGSIDE ME

Christ I’m never going outside again

Ngl, the wee mite running beside you is sort of adorable. He was like "Ahhh shiiitttt, what we running from?".

TammyJones · 08/10/2023 12:38

^^^^
That's how the rat got in - best to make sure the lid is always down properly.
(misses point of thread).

Christ now I'm scared to go near my wheelie bin. I do own a dog who turns out to be a fantastic ratter so hopefully he would sort it pdq.

That was my first thought - take your dog with you- if you have one.
They would , quite literally smell a Rat.

Bagpuss2022 · 08/10/2023 13:25

euggh this made me feel sick but we did have a “pet” rat in our arid we named him Boris he came to a sticky end by our old next door neighbours car, we had. jRT and she gave no shits. My worse experience was being in labour and they let us stay in the bereavement suite (not great when you have lost a baby) and I was in active labour and their was at least 10 cockroaches was awful

a few years ago I had a stall in an indoor sort of market well it had a covered roof and a few walls but was just earth floor and holes everywhere. I had my yarns on a bench most in baskets. so one day I was cleaning and tidying so picked up one basket to clean underneath and there asleep in the basket was a bloody huge rat. Talk about scream! I chucked the basket down and the rat scuttled off no idea where never saw it again but hubby put down a load of bait to make sure it did not happen again. I suppose that my yarn made a nice cosy nest! Thankfully soon after I moved to a shop

When I open my compost bin I have on more than one occasion disturbed a large rat munching on the vegetable peelings. I hate poisoning them but twice I’ve spotted rats hovering around my back door. Imagine if one got in whilst I was hanging out the washing. I live on a river so it’s inevitable they are around. The little bas—-d’s eat the baby ducks. My friend found one in her chicken run and when she went to usher it out with a broom it ran up the handle towards her hand, eeeeeek.

OhDoSitDownAndShutUp · 08/10/2023 16:55

Bloody hell! I'd probably have pissed myself

Sweetpea1532 · 08/10/2023 17:23

My neighbour has caught 64 rats this year in his humane trap..he then takes them up to the park to release them...we always tease him that we see the rats running ahead of his car and winning the race back to his house. We're convinced it the same rat who knows he'll get a free breakfast and a ride up to the park afterward

I used to work on the services on the motorway as a cleaner and the amount of times I would run back inside after coming face to face with a rat coming out of the rubbish compactor they had no fear , also on the same services I worked nights at a hotel as receptionist and would watch the rats running in and out of the drains in the car park

1989whome · 09/10/2023 10:42

Nooo! You just brought back the awful memory of when this happend to me 😭. Taking my bin bags out of the recycling box at the back and a rat ran straight across my arm, he ran away while I stood there screaming like a psychopath 😂. Awful, disease carrying little beasts!

GreenFields07 · 09/10/2023 22:14

A few weeks ago a colleague was leaving our office when she saw a rat being mauled by a bird. Being the lovely lady she is, she decided to try and help the half dead rat and scared off the bird to free it. The rat proceeded to thank her by darting up her trouser leg and biting her on the shin!!! She literally had to pull it and its teeth out of her leg!!! I would've never come into the office ever again

ThePoshUns · 09/10/2023 22:49

Omg @GreenFields07 that's horrific

bemorebernard · 10/10/2023 01:10

Whilst i do have pet rats I think Chris packham is interesting on wild rats .

I've had wild rats in the garden and they've never ever bothered me at all , never tried to get in , never been an ounce of bother .

SequentialAnalyst · 15/10/2023 00:08

Only just returned to this thread, and have been falling about laughing. And joy of joys, @Sweetpea1532 posted a picture of my favourite kind of rodent (albeit in a cage, but not in imminent danger of losing his/her life). I'm sure you are right about the rat-race Grin

There is progress of sorts on our rat-gnawed dumpster problem. I'll update, but no time atm.

vipersnest1 · 15/10/2023 22:42

I've put the bin-with-dead-pigeon out for collection. I can only wait to see if it's crawling with maggots after it's been emptied. ConfusedEnvy (yes, that's a vom face)

ShitMermaid · 15/10/2023 22:49

A few days ago I reached my hand behind the sofa to plug my charger in and my hand touched something for a good few seconds. I peeped behind to look and it was a massive spider. I felt really sick and emotional especially when my husband pointed out I had probably touched the spiders willy.
That night gave my hands an extra scrub with soap due to the spider wanking I had done with them.

My grandparents had a farm and there was always a rat situation.

My worst memory was of her standing in the haggart (kitchen garden), talking to a neighbour while holding two cages of squealing rats.

After the conversation she headed off cheerfully to drown them.

Didn't take a feather out of her

People used to do this at the stables if they had deep littered their horses beds for winter. There was nearly always rats in the bankings in spring when the beds were cleared. A few ladies used to have a huge blue container filled with water around 1m high in the walkway of the stables and as they were clearing the beds they’d scoop the baby rats into the water. They kept the stable doors shut to trap the rats and throw the adults in too 🤢

Apparently they need to be taken 30 or more miles away else they return like homing pigeons.

Forgottenmypasswordagain · 16/10/2023 04:50

Omg!

vipersnest1 · 16/10/2023 19:25

No maggots! 🎉

Jellykat · 16/10/2023 19:47
