Anticipation Popcorn GIF

Mine’s is that somebody hung their washing in front of their neighbour’s window (colony flats), neighbour went into the garden and pushed it to the corner of the line and left a (unnecessarily) curt note, and now the whole thing is being played out via our local share site.
I am now over invested in this dispute between two people I will never meet, over a problem of vanishing significance.

Swan vs Lifeboat.
My money's on Swan.

Esgaroth · 01/10/2023 16:57

Swans actually did get stuck on our beach once - it was so cold their feet were freezing to the water on the sand and some of them died. A sad day for the town 😞

Needmorelego · 01/10/2023 16:57

@Esgaroth oh that is sad.
I'll stop making swan jokes now 🙁

Esgaroth · 01/10/2023 16:58

Unlikely to occur in early October I'd say!

Oh that is sad 😥 but this one is not stuck it is just sitting there wondering why everyone is taking photos of it whilst at the same time berating other people for hassling the Swan by taking photos of it.

Ours is consumed with the idea that any unexpected mark or object is a possible marker from local gangs of thieves, signalling to each other that a particular house is worth robbing.

My favourite so far is someone who lives on a road with a lot of horse chestnut trees on the way to a primary school, and who kept finding conkers on her doorstep. Because obviously, modern thieves do not have access to mobile phones or cameras or anything really, and have to resort to a strange Victorian system of obscure signals.

Also, thieves are definitely a much more logical explanation than a child walking past their house every morning.

A mill chimney being demolished.

AlexCabot · 01/10/2023 18:35

I got B&B'd from our local group - Banned & Blocked.

Couldn't work out why (I never posted anything) until I realised that it came very shortly after I'd reported some of the frequent racism.

Dh is still on there. I'm not missing much.

MargaretThursday · 01/10/2023 18:45

Our one has had regular reports about the smell from the local sewage factory.
The reports come from people living close who are saying "worse than normal" and from the local councillors who want to be seen to be doing something about it. I'm not sure they're doing anything other than occasionally writing a letter and posting the reply, but let's not expect too much.

That's when the local councillors aren't taking personal credit for things they have probably had absolutely nothing to do with, but don't pass up a photo op. It's at the stage where when someone posted a picture of their (very tall) sunflower I expected one to pop on to take the credit for sun/soil/seeds/something else.

The other one for the local councillors is due to having a change in political party after the last election. So we get the ousted one popping in to point out that the new one hasn't done something.
And the new one blaming anything they can find on the ousted one.
I thought I might start a tally system from the posts, and the one that blames the other least gets my vote at the next election. I don't care what the other hasn't done. I want to see what they will do.

Lost cats. Always lost cats.

With those and the endless stream of ‘can anyone recommend a plumber/builder/garage?’, and the helicopter queries, it’s very dreary. We also have an ambitious local councillor who bogs up the pages with his constant ‘update’ posts, which are thinly veiled boasts about what a great and effective friend he is to the locality.

I don’t bother with the local FB group much anymore.

Is he an Independent by any chance?
Thinks national politics at the Senedd will be just the same as local?

PocketFullOfPuddocks · 01/10/2023 22:52

@YouveGotAFastCar Do you live in a town in Highland Perthshire? Swan news is a big thing here! 🙄

CherrySocks · 01/10/2023 22:53

This thread presents a surreal (& fairly disturbing) snapshot of 'community' life in modern Britain.
Although it's good to know there still is some community life.

Emmelina · 01/10/2023 23:06

Doing 30 in a 40
doing 58 in a 20 and blasting their horn
someone pinched a baby blanket off a wall that someone else had helpfully picked up and posted about earlier that day.
The air ambulance went over what happened?
2 police cars went through town with blues and twos what happened?
Dog shit.
Cat shit.

We’ve had an amusing sofa swap tonight.

Person A posted their sofa as going for free as they are having an extension built.

Person B asked if they could have it as they have a sofa bed that they bought for guests but it doesn’t actually fit. Says they’ll give their sofa bed on the site as well.

Person C asks if they can have the sofa bed, and they also have a van so offer to collect from A, deliver to B and collect from B at the same time.

Person D offers C some money if he’d collect another item A offered to them as they live near B.

Person E has chipped in that they wish they had something to give away or collect as they’re feeling left out 😂

It’s actually all been really community spirited tonight.

SaltGate.

Someone posted a review online of our local Italian restaurant saying the food was too salty. I live in a gated community with a few small businesses within the community, and it's all very clannish. The owners got upset. Everyone took sides, with one half going "we should support people who run businesses within our community" and the other half going "yes but their food is actually really salty isn't it?"

There's also a small water park that has play fountains with water jets that shoot up, and coloured lights that chance colour and dance (it's clearly designed for playing and splashing in, not just to be looked at), that's in the part of the community that has public access. This is a very expensive gated community located in an area that's traditionally very working class and majority black, so people who live in the neighbourhood but not in the community bring their kids to play in the water on hot days, a couple of people who own/rent in the community complain that outsiders are using the resources we fund and are being noisy, and that always turns into a big debate about gentrification.

Doesn't it?! Would be interesting to see the kinds of things that would have been posted 40/50/60 years ago had Facebook been around!

The lack of helicopter when stuck in a carpark for 4.5 MINUTES.

Some of the comments are funny. I particularly like the one where the reason for the delay was due to ‘someone feeding someone elses cat illegally’ and the others with 🚁references.

What’s the drama in your local FB site?
dinglethedragon · 02/10/2023 12:44

Well it's usually dog poo, missing cats. Potholes and grass verges .... until the post over weekend about the owner of a local business who was having an affair - got the affair partner pregnant - ran the business into the ground - gave employees no warning - all posted by husband of one of said employees. Grin

TheFretfulPorpentine · 02/10/2023 12:48

Our local FB is mainly populated by amateur photographers posting images of a prominent landmark at sunrise, sunset, in mist, by moonlight etc. which is rather lovely. The biggest drama at the moment is the traffic lights at the (permanent) roadworks getting stuck on red both ways.

MermaidEyes · 02/10/2023 13:33

Oh we have one of those too. Slap bang in the town centre which doesn't help.

Frith2013 · 02/10/2023 13:38

Mine is full of people saying land with a pipeline running through it will be built on and the developers won't know the pipeline is there and it will be a DISASTER!

As though developers don't develop things all the time...

CymruChris · 02/10/2023 17:15

Ours is the usual, adverts, lost pets, what should be in the empty shops etc. But what really annoys me is that when there is discussion about the town, anyone who wasn't born and bred there isn't allowed an opinion! The people who have never left will round on them, as of course they cannot have an opinion if they weren't born there, even if they've lived there 40 years!!

CymruChris · 02/10/2023 17:19

Also amusing when people post poor hygeine ratings for local food businesses, always followed by people who claim they don't care and will go there anyway. Recently a restaurant opened and had poor reviews (I went myself and it wasn't good). Said restaurant closed after a couple of months with other residents blaming the poor reviews and we should appreciate even having it there. My view is they should have done better. And they got a zero hygiene rating!! But we should blindly support local businesses, even if they're shite 🙄

slowsundays · 02/10/2023 17:28

A missing Rottweiler who escaped. He's a champion like breeding dog. He's been missing 9 days now and they've got mediums involved, drones, huge search parties etc. It's actually quite impressive.
