If cannabis was made legal, would you use it?

I would be interested in trying the funny version to see if it helped with pain. Not interested in smoking it. I’ve never smoked in my life and I’m not going to start

If I had a health issue that it might help then yes. Otherwise probably not. I've had opportunities in places where it's legal and have always said no because I wasn't all that interested.

greenspaces4peace · 30/09/2023 14:43

It’s legal in Canada where I live, like others I’ve used it decades ago and sleepy wooly is a good descriptor. So not interested at this point but if needed would consider edibles vs the horrid smelling smoked variety.

Megifer · 30/09/2023 14:44

Doesn't matter to me that its illegal 😬 Tried various antidepressants for years and could never deal with the side effects. A pal gave me half a joint to try a few years ago and i wonder now why I didn't try it sooner, it's been a bit of a godsend tbh. I also get edibles which I quite like.

Discwriter · 30/09/2023 14:44

Thinking about it it's ridiculous that oxycodone is legal but cannabis isn't. It's a plant! But no, I wouldn't use it, maybe if I had pain I would try it.

cassiatwenty · 30/09/2023 14:45

I wouldn't.

Both are legal in the UK with a prescription and illegal without one.

No, I get all the kicks I need from booze and fags.

Me too. I don't feel any need to use it.

MintJulia · 30/09/2023 14:51

No, I'm quite happy with my little grey cells the way they are.

And since it wouldn't be free, I'd rather spend the cash on keeping warm.

OnAFrolicOfMyOwn · 30/09/2023 14:39

@AutumnCrow Very effective for pain relief, but you have to time it right

What are the risks of mistiming? I'm not interested in cannabis for recreational purposes but I would try it for pain relief.

My experience is that it makes me (a) hungry, and, once I have eaten, (b) ready to sleep.

So I don't want to end up shovelling crap into my mouth and putting on weight (really not good for my medical condition!) so I eat a bit of edible before I have dinner/supper. I have dinner all made and standing by. So last night when the hunger struck at 10pm, I had my late supper, which was a vegetable curry and cheese & Finn Crisps. (I don't eat much during the day anyway.)

Otherwise I'd be a feral whackjob going through packets of biscuits and ten bags of crisps.

I make sure all work is finished for the day (I'm freelance) and that I can go to bed and sleep when I'm ready.

So it's an occasional 'end of the day' thing, to enable better rest and better sleep when the pain is really getting to me. I wouldn't want to eat any edible if I had a working day ahead, or indeed an early start for a key meeting.

JellyComb · 30/09/2023 14:53

No, I hate it as it has a weird hallucinogenic effect on me, ever since i took acid in the 90s.

My son (16) has recently come off it having been quite badly addicted to it the last 2 years. Watching him withdraw was awful, like coming off heroin. His mood and emotions have only just stabilized after 2 months and he is now trying to put on weight. I would say perhaps 60 % of his mates smoke zoots so i am really proud of him for stopping.

So i only have negative feelings about it. However i understand those that take it for pain relief etc.

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 30/09/2023 14:53

Smoked it in my youth, back in the U.K. I’m also in Canada. Could get some if I wanted, but I haven’t felt the need to.

RudsyFarmer · 30/09/2023 14:55

I wouldn’t but I think a hell of a lot more people would.

Kaill · 30/09/2023 14:57

I don’t drink or smoke so wouldn’t use cannabis either, even if it was legal. Have you smelled the stench on other people? Cannabis and tobacco are disgusting. And the last thing we need is to make it legal for people to wander around stoned.

TomatoSandwiches · 30/09/2023 14:59

No, I have a history of psychotic depression and come from a family of addicts, I have less than 5 alcoholic drinks a year and decline opiates for pain relief.

ditalini · 30/09/2023 14:59

Not recreationally as I didn't enjoy it the few times I tried when I was younger.

Absolutely I would try it for pain relief though if I needed to.

liveforsummer · 30/09/2023 14:59

Presume that poster means 'any drugs that can get me arrested for possession'.

They can't mean that as the question was wound your take it 'if it was legal'. I certainly wouldn't take it for recreation. I hate how it makes me feel but I find it strange that people would still judge others when it would then be in the same category as having wine or beer. How do you rationalise that?!

Onemonthtofindandbuy · 30/09/2023 15:01

I have a long term condition that I’ve seen people in countries that have legalised cannabis use say it has helped them with, so yes, when I’m having a bad flare I would give it a go to see if it gave some relief.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 30/09/2023 15:04

No. Just not interested. I don't need it medicinally, and recreationally it's not my scene. Rightly or wrongly, I associate it with stereotypical pathetic adult stoners, but also (in this case rightly) with the many students I have seen it mess up during my long teaching career.

bombastix · 30/09/2023 15:04

Better than opiate painkillers but certainly problematic in terms of motivation.

Medically I think very useful for many people. It should be widely used as a painkiller imo. Opiate addiction on prescription is a problem in the U.K.

Shraree · 30/09/2023 15:05

I occasionally use it at the moment so yes, I would.

assietplat · 30/09/2023 15:06

I don't drink or smoke so can't see why I'd use this either. No

Goreg · 30/09/2023 15:07

No, because I really don't get on with it at all. I seem to do much better with synthetic substances.

xyz111 · 30/09/2023 15:09

I absolutely pray this never comes into force. After walking around Las Vegas where it's legal, it absolutely stunk everywhere, the smell was horrendous. I'd hate to smell it everywhere here.

It depends on the strain strength and reason. There isn’t one type of cannabis there’s hundreds of different strains with different effects. Pain relief, reduces anxiety, improves Parkinson’s symptoms, increase appetite, epilepsy management, reduces menopause symptoms.

Many medication drugs have their roots from plants (digoxin from foxglove, aspirin from salicylic acid, cocaine from cocoa etc) it’s why drug companies fund expeditions into jungles etc to collect new plant samples. Lots of abused drugs are also used in medical settings how many people had heroin for labour pain or their kids for procedural pain or had ketamine for sedation. Just because its also used as a street drug doesn’t mean it’s not helpful.

in 100 years i believe it will be routinely used and people will be surprised that it was illegal and that smoking, alcohol and chemotherapy were commonplace.
