I work at a local primary school where I know a few parents who are dinner ladys i keep noticing they wear their uniform when dropping their own kids off and then they go home and then come back at lunchtime. Do you feel this is appropriate. Im not sure whether to mention it to our head

I am a dinner lady,
I drop my kids at school
I think I am appropriate
But you think I'm a fool
I am a dinner lady
Supervision is my hymn
But see me in my uniform
You will call out "that's grim!"

I used to wear a tabard
And my hair in a bun
Now I dob in 'ladys'
And to the Head I do run....

Next please!

I watch them puff up their hoodies,
Hoping to catch mum’s eye,
Waiting for her to ask them,
”Is tomorrow cottage pie?”

Dinnerlady12 · 26/09/2023 16:21

I am a dinner lady and have to change into and out my uniform in work. We are not allowed out of work with uniform for hygiene reasons. Also not allowed to have nails done, piercings, jewellery, heavy make up or eyelash extensions.

I’m a dinner lady,
I think that I’m all that,
wearing the school hoodie
and my white trilby hat…..

next verse……

The mummies come a flocking
The yummy ones the most
To praise me on my wedges
And my Wednesday veggie roast

You aren't allowed to have piercings?

Dinnerlady12 · 26/09/2023 16:23

Although sometimes if I'm late leaving work I will throw my hoodie on and rush to collect my daughter from school still wearing my work trousers and shoes. If I was caught doing this I'd be in trouble.

Dinnerlady12 · 26/09/2023 16:24

All visible piercings have to be removed for your shift.

KARENJRAYBOULD · 26/09/2023 16:25

I work in a care home and we are strictly forbidden to come to work or go home in uniform. Most hospital staff are the same. It is completely inappropriate and they should change into uniform when they get to work. In fact I'm surprised they don't have 2 lots of uniform one for dealing with food and another for the rest of the time. Frankly it's a little lazy and raises the risk of cross contamination. They could be changing babies nappies or scrubbing the loo before coming to work!

Piggywaspushed · 26/09/2023 16:26

Are you provided somewhere to change and lockers? Because I don't know of a single school which has this.

our school cook makes everything from scratch and is in from early morning baking shortbread, making bread, making pastry, chopping veg, layering lasagnes, chopping and peeling spuds, making up the salad bar etc.
**
She also prepares all the fruit/milk etc for morning snack time. It's a full on job and not just a turn up a few mins before the lunch bell goes type thing and that's for a small rural primary.”

Thats remarkable. A state school?

Yep, very common. It's a myth that all school lunches are just cheap, reheated food. There's too much competition out there now and providers up their game to ensure they keep the contract.

We have a staff room/toilet no lockers. I start and finish before everyone else so I don't have to change in front of anyone but I have worked in other schools (some of which have lockers) where everyone has to change in front of each other and wasn't comfortable with it. This is the rules over all the schools in my area. I am employed by the council not the school so all the rules are the same in every school in the area. I'm not sure how other council's do it.

Why have I never heard of baked bean rounders before this thread? They sound immense😋

Thegoodbadandugly · 26/09/2023 16:34

Christ almighty some people really do need to live a little......

Piggywaspushed · 26/09/2023 16:35

I'm nit sure changing in toilets is any more hygienic...

Rec0veringAcademic · 26/09/2023 16:36

Now I can't get the image of Twinkle getting teased by Tony about coming to work with her uniform on... :D 😂

I swagger round the playground,
My lanyard like a gong,
The mums all want to be me,
You know that they’re not wrong…

Next!

I'm wearing my posh uniform
With name badge on the front
But sadly those on Mumsnet
Think that I'm a cunt

That doesn't say they need to actually change clothes at work. Just they need to put on clean clothes for the day's work. That's all. Which they can do at home. Sorry but it doesn't say what you want it to say, and 'ideally' isn't an edict. Just a recommendation. But in reality no one has time to change at work, and no real bosses would want that time taken eating (pardon the pun) into the shift. Suggesting it is standard behaviour is just batshit crazy. And, it's why APRONS exist.

Edited

Catering staff can and do get changed into their uniform at work rather than wearing it to work and bosses absolutely have these best practice policies in place for hygiene reasons. Aprons are only one part of your PPE and certainly don't solely protect food from contamination.

No actually supposed to change in the toilet you are to change in the staff room.

TheShellBeach · 26/09/2023 16:41

I swagger round the kitchen
Wearing just my thong
I drink another cup of tea
Then ring the dinner gong

Next!

This seems bizarre judging on the staffrooms I've seen!

Sandals12 · 26/09/2023 16:44

If it was a like a chef's whites type uniform then no they should not be worn out and about for food hygiene reasons.

Well here's an update! I mentioned it as its against our school rules that we don't wear uniform in the playground and infant the headteacher was very happy to receive the information and it will be spoken about in our next meeting

Well you sound positively gleeful that you've done this. What a tw@t you are!

I'm getting tired of poetry
And making fruit and cream
One day I'll be Prime Minister
Or maybe that's a dream
