How much do you pay for music lessons?

My husband is a music teacher who provides private tuition in piano and guitar. He's busy and his 'after school' slots are filling up. This is his sole form of income. We're having an argument/discussion about his rates. I think he should put them up, especially as he is now busy. He charges £17 for half hour, £28 for an hour. Pupils come to a music studio at our house. We're not in London, but live in a market town, semi-affluent in the midlands. Thanks!

We pay 16 for half an hour or 32 an hour. I think I'd prefer it if the hour was a bit cheaper pro rata so his rates sound good.

DD does 45 minutes piano and it's a little more than that. Her teacher is phenomenal.

Can he charge the new starts more? Rather than putting up prices for existing students.

Can he. look to get some work in schools as a peripatetic teacher. Often isn't quite as good as travel time etc but it would mean income in the day too.

Yes that's cheap compared to around here (affluent SE area). I think we partly £22 for half an hour privately and £20 for half an hour through the music service. An hour 1:1 should be £30.

Piano. 45 mins in our own home. £28 per week.

£19 for half an hour. That’s at school, the teacher does lessons all through the school day.

DS pays £40 for an hour in Leeds.

In Oxford I was paying £40 an hour for violin and cello lessons 10 years ago. These were excellent, highly qualified, conservatoire trained, experienced teachers, with serious students. Then I was paying £110 for 90 minute lessons in London when our son was very advanced (teacher was also teaching at the Royal College).

I was paying £34 an hour pro rota in 2018! Thankfully she is an adult so I no longer pay, her current teacher is £72 an hour but it's funded by her degree

My DS's piano teacher has recently increased from £17 to £20 for a half hour. London suburb.

I pay £20/half an hour for a piano teacher who is a head of music in an independent school.
We also live in an affluent SE town so would be prepared/able to pay more if she asked it.

And £10/half hour for brass teacher who is doing this for funds for his brass band (ie not a professional teacher, by trade, albeit very good and popular with kids!)

£40 / hr is now pretty standard in central Scotland...

We pay a bargain £15 for half an hour. He usually finishes 15 mins late (but starts on time).

£35 an hour I think is the MU rate

Privately, £20.25 for half an hour, £40.50 per hour. Through the local music trust which is subsidised, £19 per half an hour, whether it is at school or the trust building.
He's way under charging. It isn't just the teaching time he needs to cover, all the prepping and admin needs to be covered too.

We pay £28 for 40 minutes. This is cello.

The musicians union suggest £40.50 per hour for one to one lessons.

That's cheap. In an affluent area I'd up the fees for existing students by 10% and start new ones on £25 per half hour, £45 per hour. he gets no paid leave etc, and has expenses, presumably including personal liability insurance etc for running a business at home which must be pricey.

My DC's saxophone, violin, flute and singing lessons of varying lengths all work out at around £40 an hour (south London).
