How much do you pay for music lessons?

My husband is a music teacher who provides private tuition in piano and guitar. He's busy and his 'after school' slots are filling up. This is his sole form of income. We're having an argument/discussion about his rates. I think he should put them up, especially as he is now busy. He charges £17 for half hour, £28 for an hour. Pupils come to a music studio at our house. We're not in London, but live in a market town, semi-affluent in the midlands. Thanks!

We pay musicians union rates too. Our music teacher is very highly qualified- conservatoire etc- I wouldn't want to pay that much for someone who didn't have that level of qualifications.

Springingintosummer · 25/09/2023 21:24

£17 for 30 mins

Gro · 25/09/2023 21:26

£15 - 30 mins piano
£13.50 - 20 mins singing

Paying £15 for half an hour Electric Guitar in Yorkshire. I consider this cheap for a good teacher.

RenegadeKeeblerElf · 25/09/2023 21:29

£12 for 20mins piano, in the teacher's home. Violin £16.10 for 20 mins, through the local council, at a local school. In Surrey, so sounds like I've got a good deal!!

CaveMum · 25/09/2023 21:29

East Anglia, we pay £11 for 20 mins of piano tuition at school, so equivalent £33ph.

justasoul · 25/09/2023 21:29

£12 per 20 minutes lesson, piano. This is the local music service that comes to school so considerably cheaper than private lessons.

xyzandabc · 25/09/2023 21:31

I pay £18 for 30 mins at school with visiting private music teachers.
County music service charge £27.75 for 30 mins

Redwinestillfine · 25/09/2023 21:34

We pay £14 per half hour north west

Chickpea17 · 25/09/2023 21:40

We pay £15 for half an hour piano lesson.

DanceMumTaxi · 25/09/2023 21:43

School peripatetic music teacher in primary is £10 for 20 minutes. So that would be £30 an hour.

BCCoach · 25/09/2023 21:46

Depends on the instrument. £40/hr here (SE) for reeds, £35/hr for guitar and piano. £38/hr for drums. Gets expensive with 3 musicians in the family, two of which have two instruments 🤣

jolenethea · 25/09/2023 21:49

£15 for adult half an hour piano or £12 for children half an hour piano, although don't think they're the best, so probably better off paying a bit more!

jolenethea · 25/09/2023 21:51

Should have added, midlands market town also

Wheelz46 · 25/09/2023 21:55

We pay £12 for 20 minutes of private music lessons

Runnerduck34 · 25/09/2023 22:04

I pay £30 per hour

VitaminX · 25/09/2023 22:06

Just over 700 pounds for the year, with 1 hour of tuition per week during term time. I think that comes to roughly 20 quid per hour, but it's at a music school that is subsidised by the municipality so reasonably cheap for that reason.

APurpleSquirrel · 25/09/2023 22:21

As a another PPs said - could he look at doing lessons in schools?
My DD does guitar in school time & we pay £6 for 30min, but it's a group lesson so 2-3 pupils at the same time.

Bbq1 · 25/09/2023 22:29

We pay £30 an hour for guitar lessons . I think half an hour is £17.

£35 an hour for piano here, but the teacher comes to us. He does our suburb on a Wednesday. So convenient for parents!

SwayingInTime · 14/05/2024 08:26

It is worrying that I've been able to find decent music lessons for the same price (£15/30mins, £30/hr) for a decade - musicians definitely need to increase rates!

WessexWanderer · 14/05/2024 08:33

I pay £15 for half an hour term time only so it's usually £90 per half term. This is for a teacher who comes into school & does back-to-back lessons throughout the day.

I think she goes into several different schools.

OmuraWhale · 14/05/2024 08:35

I pay £35 for an hour.
