How much do you pay for music lessons?

My husband is a music teacher who provides private tuition in piano and guitar. He's busy and his 'after school' slots are filling up. This is his sole form of income. We're having an argument/discussion about his rates. I think he should put them up, especially as he is now busy. He charges £17 for half hour, £28 for an hour. Pupils come to a music studio at our house. We're not in London, but live in a market town, semi-affluent in the midlands. Thanks!

£15 per half hour - drums

We are rural SE and pay between £30 and £40 per hour depending on instrument. My experience is that classical instrument teachers can generally charge more than those focussing on pop/jazz music and instruments. So if he is teaching classical guitar and piano he can probably up it a bit, but if teaching electric or acoustic guitar and pop/jazz piano he’s probably in the ballpark.

https://musiciansunion.org.uk/education-and-teaching/teaching-pay-and-employment/music-teaching-rates-of-pay

The musicians union suggest £40.50 per hour for one to one lessons.

This is what we pay (Scotland).

But we do have a really highly qualified conservatoire trained teacher who is a really experienced teacher (she's AMAZING and worth every penny).

We have paid less in the past about £17 for 30 mins) to a music school where the teachers are more "students who got to grade 8" rather than people who have conservatoire degrees in performing their instruments. But the quality of the teaching was notably different.

Dd does drum lessons online that are £16 per 30 minutes. Dd has ADHD and her drum teacher is absolutely amazing with her, and we have been through a few so I would happily pay more.

My other dd does piano lessons in person for £17 per half hour. Her teacher also runs a free choir (she does vocal coaching too) so it's more than worth it.

€30 for half an hour in Ireland

DH charges between £15 and £17 per half-hour. Some of them have been paying the same for a long time, so it does need to go up really. I think he starts new people at the higher rate.

CrotchetyQuaver · 14/05/2024 21:40

£60/hour for conservatoire level tuition at her house.
I feel I'm getting a good deal reading the replies here!

Muchtoomuchtodo · 14/05/2024 21:44

£17.50 for 30 minutes in our home. Guitar. South Wales.

it went up last summer from £15

RhinestoneCowgirl · 14/05/2024 21:48

We pay £30 for 50 minutes violin lesson, he's local so comes to our house which is perfect for DD.

There used to be subsidised peripatetic lessons at her secondary school, but they only offer guitar and drums now...

Prices seem to vary a lot depending on location and experience. I pay £25 for a 45-minute lesson in London, which seems to be on the higher end. My friend pays £20 for 30 minutes with a teacher who comes highly recommended. Some teachers offer discounts for block bookings, so it’s worth asking. Online bass guitar lessons can also be a cheaper alternative if you find the right instructor.

Redwinestillfine · 12/03/2025 19:14

Northwest £16 per half hour here

Springingintosummer · 13/03/2025 18:17

I paid £37 for a g5 piano accompaniment a few weeks ago for my son on his trumpet.

also another income stream.

Redstrampoline · 13/03/2025 19:11

£22 for half an hour in the Midlands. The teacher is amazing, my son is doing really well with her.

Maviaz · 13/03/2025 19:15

£28 for 45 minutes

ruralwanderer · 13/03/2025 19:17

My son's guitar teacher charges £15 for half an hour and this seems pretty standard round here.

Inspiremeaholiday · 13/03/2025 19:18

W11 London- £30 for 30 min

dramallama25 · 13/03/2025 19:19

Naice London area, we pay £30 for half an hour piano lesson.

pleasedonotfeedme · 13/03/2025 19:20

We pay £25 for half an hour (south east England), but in practice the teacher always goes over so it’s more like 40 mins. Teacher is excellent so I don’t mind the cost!

Bunnycat101 · 13/03/2025 19:23

£25 per 30 minutes. It’s been quite interesting to see the range.

CatherinedeBourgh · 13/03/2025 19:27

40 per hour, but only because we've been with the same teacher for ages and do multiple hours a week (3 musicians, plus theory lessons). He charges more for new students.

Penko25 · 13/03/2025 19:28

£40 an hour is the going rate here.

NCIRL · 13/03/2025 19:39

We currently pay £25 for 40 mins but get a discount because she's in the music school band. She'll have to move soon and then it will either be £30 for 30 mins, £40 for 40 mins or £60 for 1 hour.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 13/03/2025 19:45

£25/ individual half hour lesson through school music service.
It's not cheap, but it's very convenient.
