Have you ever found yourself cheering on the villain?

In a book, tv show or movie?

I usually find the villains to be more interesting than the heroes but generally I'm happy for the heroes when they achieve their goal but I find it incredibly hard to root for The Three Musketeers because they're so unlikeable and because of their blatant misogny. I appreciate that it was written a long time ago and set even earlier but I found myself wanting Milady to win.

Have you found yourself liking a villain more than the hero(es)?

I hope Mr McGregor catches Peter Rabbit every time. Thieving little scrote.

(Based on the CBeebies series, I don't know if he's less annoying in the book!).

MaudGonneOutForAFag · 24/09/2023 18:44

Frequently. I’ve always enjoyed evil, mouse-loving Count Fosco in The Woman in White, who at least appreciates fabulous Marian Halcombe, and Charlotte Mullen (The Real Charlotte) is one of my favourite literary characters.

Davros · 24/09/2023 18:46

Jesse in Breaking Bad
Tom in Tom & Jerry, although that has a lot of subtlety

Watto1 · 24/09/2023 18:47

I wanted the traitors to win on Traitors.

Rogue1001MNer · 24/09/2023 18:47

Horrid Henry!

heathspeedwell · 24/09/2023 18:47

Only when it's Alan Rickman.

StressedToDeathhhh · 24/09/2023 18:47

Sharpay in High School Musical 100% deserves the part more than Gabriella and gets treated very unfairly

Rogue1001MNer · 24/09/2023 18:48

Lots of adult things too, but I can't think of one atm

But anything where the goody is too prissy

greengreengrass25 · 24/09/2023 18:49

Definitely

Remember Lambsey - it's the wolf

EnjoyingTheSilence · 24/09/2023 18:49

Thanos in the Avenger films. One of my favourite memes at the time was don’t let David Attenborough get hold of the infinity stones!

Godzilla, King Kong both abused and misunderstood

TwoScoopsPlease · 24/09/2023 18:50

I forgot to add that I'm not surprised that Anakin lost his shit after the way the Jedi Council treated the 9 year old him and his Mother. It doesn't excuse killing the "Younglings" but he was treated so badly by Yoda and co.

Iago is so nasty I actually admire him.

verdantverdure · 24/09/2023 18:50

No.

As soon as they're evil I'm out.

Biscuitandacuppa · 24/09/2023 18:53

Loki from the Marvel movies he may be genocidal but is very funny and treated badly by Thor since childhood.

ApolloandDaphne · 24/09/2023 18:56

Phantom of the Opera. The phantom over the wimpy prince any time. Especially when the phantom is Gerard Butler!

7Worfs · 24/09/2023 18:56

Yes to Tom and Thanos.

Also Gul Dukat on occasion - such a marvellous opportunity for a redemption arc wasted!

CrunchyCarrot · 24/09/2023 18:59

Dexter! Really how could one cheer on a serial killer but... he had a traumatic childhood and he did have a 'code'.

Loki, yes for sure (not helped by Hiddles being so cute).

Jesse in Breaking Bad (only watching that now, what an epic series).

pompomdaisy · 24/09/2023 18:59

Yeah I was really rooting for Patrick Bateman. So misunderstood.

MariePaperRoses · 24/09/2023 18:59

Predator 2.

I wanted him to kill the lot of them for their atrocious acting.

I also think Godzilla should be given some love and support.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 24/09/2023 18:59

Yes, I was rooting for the Night King for most of season 7 of GOT.

Everyone else was annoying me.

viviscool · 24/09/2023 19:00

Kylo Ren in Star Wars

Gowlett · 24/09/2023 19:02

Yes to Phantom!

PinkMoscatoLover · 24/09/2023 19:03

Law Abiding Citizen. Gerald didn’t deserve the ending he got, I wanted him to kill every single person!

SlippinJanie · 24/09/2023 19:05

Jesse in Breaking Bad
Tom in Tom & Jerry, although that has a lot of subtlety

I always rooted for Tom because he almost never won. And also because my mum used to hate the smug mouse.

Richard III - he makes you complicit, saying "Watch me make idiots of this lot. It'll be a scream" (paraphrased)

AgnestaVipers · 24/09/2023 19:09

Exactly. Iago literally chats to us as he is making his devilish plans up. Plus Richard is badly treated by dint of his disability.
