Have you ever found yourself cheering on the villain?

In a book, tv show or movie?

I usually find the villains to be more interesting than the heroes but generally I'm happy for the heroes when they achieve their goal but I find it incredibly hard to root for The Three Musketeers because they're so unlikeable and because of their blatant misogny. I appreciate that it was written a long time ago and set even earlier but I found myself wanting Milady to win.

Have you found yourself liking a villain more than the hero(es)?

I love Flambo in father Brown

FKATondelayo · 24/09/2023 19:51

I know she's not really a villain. And I know it's the point of the book but Rebecca.

Agree with the Alan Rickman comment. Every time I watch Die Hard I can’t believe we’re supposed to be rooting for obnoxious meathead Bruce Willis instead of clever, witty, sexy Alan. Same with Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves.

I can probably think of more; villains often seem to be more interestingly written and played by more charismatic actors than the heroes.

Moriarty in the Sherlock tv series (couldn’t be anything to do with him being played by Andrew Scott of course 😜). He is so evilly twisted, much more interesting than know-it-all Sherlock

Emily (?) in ‘For Her Sins’. Jo Joyners character got away with murder and we were supposed to feel sorry for her because she was married with 2 kids. I love Rachel Shenton and wish Laura/Catherine had had a proper comeuppance!

Ken was the villain in Barbie wasn't he 😀

Popetthetreehugger · 24/09/2023 20:11

Very obscure, but 30 plus years ago the wonderful Diana rig was In something called mother I think ? She killed the’ other woman ‘ at the time I was thick in a horrendous divorce and couldn’t truly see anything wrong with it !🤣🤣

alldakatz · 24/09/2023 20:13

I was on Alex's side in Fatal Attraction, mainly because Beth was such a vapid little housewife.

CatChant · 24/09/2023 20:13

Becky Sharp in Vanity Fair, and Mary and Henry Crawford in Mansfield Park, as other posters have said, because they are all so much more fun than the very dull and worthy heroes and heroines. I know who I would rather go to the pub with.

Annie Joyce in Patricia Wentworth’s The Traveller Returns because she was clever, and audacious, had been treated shabbily by her rich relations, then cheated of a promised inheritance and finally abandoned to the mercies of the Germans during the invasion of France.

Becoming an imposter, a fraudster, an accessory to murder and being up to her neck in espionage and treason still doesn’t make her an unsympathetic character. I still want her to have got away with it!

Frequently. I’ve always enjoyed evil, mouse-loving Count Fosco in The Woman in White, who at least appreciates fabulous Marian Halcombe, and Charlotte Mullen (The Real Charlotte) is one of my favourite literary characters.

I wish Somerville & Ross had written a sequel. I would love to have known what happened after Norry the Boat delivered the shocking news……Charlotte, Mr Lambert, Hawkins …what did they do?

Came on to say exactly this. Fanny is a boring prig and Edmund is a boring prick.

I had a lot of sympathy for Maria Rushworth. She deserves her own book. Maybe I will write it some day.

Helpmepleaseimbusy · 24/09/2023 20:16

Yes. The movie Matchpoint.

AndAllOurYesterdays · 24/09/2023 20:16

Malcolm Tucker. Love a bit of righteous anger, when it's not directed at me!

TheFreaksShallInheritTheEarth · 24/09/2023 20:20

I also came on to say Tom... Jerry was an annoying twat.

Not sure why people are saying Jesse in BB: surely the whole point is that he, a druggie little layabout to begin with, was ultimately the only one with any moral fibre, showing extreme remorse and regret for everything. He was also a pretty loyal friend and business partner throughout, as well as brother and nephew.

MammaTo · 24/09/2023 20:21

I always rooted for Cersei Lannister in GOT - couldn’t bare Daenerys from episode 1.

gawditswindy · 24/09/2023 20:24

Tom Ripley - but you are supposed to I guess, despite everything

Came on to say this. Patricia Highsmith is a great writer.

Definitely

A bit like Roadrunner and Lambsey in it's the Wolf

Mouthfulofquiz · 24/09/2023 20:30

Love Patrick Bateman. Not really but something about him was so perfect that he kind of deserved to thrive as an apex predator.

Haggisfish3 · 24/09/2023 20:30

I genuinely worried I was a psychopath when I sympathised with the killer in seven

the80sweregreat · 24/09/2023 20:32

JR in Dallas
I wished I could be a horrible and get away with it ! Lol

wizzbitt · 24/09/2023 20:32

Zipps · 24/09/2023 19:12

Yes Jaws

😂

Morewineplease10 · 24/09/2023 20:32

Tony Soprano. The violence in the sopranos could be shocking but when it was a baddie on the receiving end I really got on board with it!

TammyJones · 24/09/2023 20:33

@7Worfs

Also Gul Dukat on occasion - such a marvellous opportunity for a redemption arc wasted!

^^^^

Totally agreed - great character.
And Tom (Tom and Jerry )

Wildhorses2244 · 24/09/2023 20:33

Captain Jack Sparrow 🥰

Recently read Where the Crawdads Sing and found myself cheering on the villain in that.
