Have you ever found yourself cheering on the villain?

In a book, tv show or movie?

I usually find the villains to be more interesting than the heroes but generally I'm happy for the heroes when they achieve their goal but I find it incredibly hard to root for The Three Musketeers because they're so unlikeable and because of their blatant misogny. I appreciate that it was written a long time ago and set even earlier but I found myself wanting Milady to win.

Have you found yourself liking a villain more than the hero(es)?

Yes to Tom and Thanos.

Also Gul Dukat on occasion - such a marvellous opportunity for a redemption arc wasted!

How could you? Gul Dukat??? He deserved to die that fiery death.

He stole Worf's happiness you know.

Mountaineer0009 · 24/09/2023 23:42

usually when the villian turned to the good side

sylar in heroes, you sorta understand part of his drive, when he gives the ability to peter and peter was and is always a good hero, but when he gets sylars ability you see how it changed sylar.

then spike in buffy the vampire slayer.

DynamicK · 24/09/2023 23:43

Vampire diaries - Klaus was definitely my favourite character. He was a typical misunderstood cold hard character.

CaptainSeven · 24/09/2023 23:44

@Mountaineer0009 that was what I meant when I said he stole Worf's happiness!

eandz13 · 24/09/2023 23:46

Hannibal Lecter, the Mads Mikkelsen version.

Agree with Klaus from TVD!

Agreeing with lots of PPs
Every villain that Alan Rickman ever played, precisely because Alan Rickman played them.
Wile E Coyote - poor guy, Road Runner was a smug twat
Thanos - not evil, just rational surely (but I have only seen the movies not read the comics so that could explain it)
Mama Morton - too, too cool
and finally, the ultimate, Joker (but specifically the Joaquin Phoenix incarnation)

Yul Brynner in The Ten Commandments.

Teresa Mendosa & Pote and their drug cartel in Queen of the South, although she tried not to behave in the way cartels do.

The Baronness Rhodmilla De Ghent, I understand her wanting opportunities for her daughter (although she treated the other one almost as badly as Danielle) from Ever After.
Klaus from Vampire Diaries, his misdeeds stemmed from his overwhelming need to have a family of his own and I understand that.
Ursula, felt like an outcast and that sucks.
Lady Tremaine, what she did to Cinderella before the ball was evil but she just wanted opportunities for her children. Also her character had a certain je ne sais quoi.
Rio from Good Girls, I think he genuinely cared for Beth and was actually hurt when she betrayed him.
Lastly, Hannibal. I will never believe that Hannibal and Clarice aren't the greatest horrific love story ever told.

RicherThanYews · 25/09/2023 00:33

How could I forget Heathcliff?!? He is one angry dude. I don't know if he was a nice guy turned asshole because of his crushed feelings or just an asshole who was mildly kept in check because of Cathy. He exacted revenge with style though.

Only when it's Alan Rickman.

You beat me to it! 😄

Any cartoon cat, or Wile. E Coyote.
Captain Hook (I am not alone in this, there's tons of pro-Hook and anti-Pan stories out there). Actually anyone played by Jason Isaacs ...

As an aside I loathe The Three Musketeers because it butchered the reputations of two extremely interesting, intelligent and important men (Louis XIII and Richelieu) who were colleagues and friends, not a wimp and a villain. History > turgid novels any day!

Very obscure, but 30 plus years ago the wonderful Diana rig was In something called mother I think ? She killed the’ other woman ‘ at the time I was thick in a horrendous divorce and couldn’t truly see anything wrong with it !🤣🤣

I remember this! "Mother Love". Utterly gripping. You can still get it from specialist/rare DVD stockists.

Mistressanne · 25/09/2023 07:14

Gaston in Beauty and the Beast, so much more dynamic than the maudlin beast played by Dan Stevens.

ChocolateCakeOverspill · 25/09/2023 07:17

The kidnappers in Taken. That girl they kidnapped was really fucking annoying

Blinkinbloodyhayfever · 25/09/2023 07:22

The shark in Jaws! One of my dc watched it when little and sobbed when the shark died - I felt like the worst parent ever!

koalaknickers · 25/09/2023 07:22

I also think Godzilla should be given some love and support.

😁

sashh · 25/09/2023 07:27

Spike in Buffy.

ShinyPikachu · 25/09/2023 07:45

Yes to Phantom and also especially when it's Gerard Butler.

I seem to like things with pointy teeth. Vampires, sharks, dinosaurs.

DH recently came into the room when I was watching Jurassic World Dominion because I was yelling at it. I was telling the dinosaurs just to eat everyone. Grin I can't even remember anything from the movie now other than the fact most people in it were annoying me.

JaneJeffer · 25/09/2023 07:46

Where do you stand on Gremlins @ShinyPikachu?

Well they're much cuter as mogwai. Grin It's been so long since I watched any of the movies I think I need to rewatch and see which side I cheer for. I think they're maybe just a little too chaotic for me, and I know that's saying something when I cheer for dinosaurs. Grin
