Last time you used cash?

Went to the ATM this morning, as needed to get some cash out for a club that DC does.
It’s the only time I ever need to use real money.

Do you still use cash frequently?
Does anyone (other than my parents 🙈) still use cheques??!

I really only use cash to tip my hair stylist and pay my Avon representative.

comedownwithme · 20/09/2023 09:57

I rarely use cash, went through quite a bit on holiday spending in arcades and seaside souvenir and donut stalls.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 20/09/2023 09:58

This morning

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 20/09/2023 09:59

I was given £100 in cash a few months back. I kept forgetting about it (usually use Apple Pay) and eventually schlepped to the bank and paid it in.

Augustus40 · 20/09/2023 09:59

I use cash all the time.

Guiltyfeethavegotnorhythm0 · 20/09/2023 10:00

I keep loose change in my purse as often have to be in hospital and the machines only take cash . I'm not going without a coffee while hanging out in hospital waiting rooms .

Just been away for a three day weekend in Europe to attend a wedding. My Monzo card went between the fridge and the kitchen counter 2 days before.

All I took was my phone!

OnAFrolicOfMyOwn · 20/09/2023 10:02

Yesterday paying for a pub lunch and some charity shop purchases.

Sourisblanche · 20/09/2023 10:03

I pay £5 cash each week for ds foootball training. I tried to give my teen dd £20 cash last week to get something for me in town. She looked at me in disbelief and asked me to put in on her account instead!

Other than that, this summer in France as some restaurants didn’t accept cards.

YourNameGoesHere · 20/09/2023 10:04

Only if I go to a car boot sale or buy something from FB marketplace do I use cash these days.

Everything else is accepts card payments so no point getting cash out. Which is just as well as 90% of the time when I walk past the local cash machines they are either out of money or not working at all.

Laurdo · 20/09/2023 10:07

I use cash quite a lot. Some businesses are going cash only now because of the amount of money they lose paying card companies.

IHeartGeneHunt · 20/09/2023 10:08

I use it a lot, I find it easier to keep check of what I'm spending.

Vates · 20/09/2023 10:10

I only get cash out to top up my prepayment meters at the post office as you can't pay with your card. It is very annoying. I much prefer to use my card everywhere as it is easier for me to track via online banking.

But I believe that cash shouldn't be got rid of as there should be a choice for people.

TheChosenTwo · 20/09/2023 10:11

Hardly ever.
I booked something for a group of us at the start of the year and 2 people paid me back in cash. £240 has been in my purse since about March! However I went out for dinner on Friday and paid the bill in cash so have about £60 left. Sort of felt like free money!

TigerRag · 20/09/2023 10:11

Last week. I've got cash that needs to be used. But as it's a mix of coins I can't deposit it in my account.

I use cash quite a lot. Some businesses are going cash only now because of the amount of money they lose paying card companies.

I'd have thought the loss to the company from people who cannot make purchases using a card would have been much greater than the loss in fees from taking card payments to be honest.

Aaron95 · 20/09/2023 10:12

I have to write 1 cheque a year to our town council to pay the allotment rent. They are so old fashioned that they only accept payment by cash in person or by cheque. They then post out a hand written receipt. It's so inefficient and must cost them £800 a year in postage where a simple Email system would do.

Other than that, I haven't used a cheque for at least 10 years.

minipie · 20/09/2023 10:12

There’s a nail place near me that only takes cash - suspect it can only do that because there’s a cash machine on the corner, so people can pop to the machine when they have (inevitably) not got cash on them.

Willmafrockfit · 20/09/2023 10:13

my hair dresser wants cash
the man i buy bacci off wants cash
i owed a neighbour money so cash was easier

Anotherdayanotherfuckup · 20/09/2023 10:14

Couple of months back when I got Chinese 😋

Fluffy40 · 20/09/2023 10:15

Yesterday in a pub, but mainly use debit card daily

2chocolateoranges · 20/09/2023 10:15

I mainly use cash.

food shopping and petrol and the only times I really use card.

Beezknees · 20/09/2023 10:18

I use cash loads. The library only takes cash and I often reserve books, they charge 80p for a reservation so I keep change in my bag for that. DS does a hobby that is cash or cheque only so I pay cash every week for that.

Mum2aTeen · 20/09/2023 10:19

Hardly ever.
My son's school has out of school sports, so he has to give that $10 every week. That's basically the most I see cash during the week.
Since covid, everyone has gone card only, even little market stalls or the littlest shops, it's all card only like they will accept cash but prefer card.

ShimmyingThroughTheChaos · 20/09/2023 10:20

This week I have used cash for:
Paying the cleaner
Paying a small local business that does buggy repairs
Paying for a local company to remove old, unwanted furniture
....and we will probably use cash at the weekend for our Chinese takeaway!

I think there are some trades and small businesses that want cash because they have been stung by clients who don't pay invoices on time or that need to be chased for money. At least with cash in hand you know the transaction is settled there and then!
