Last time you used cash?

Went to the ATM this morning, as needed to get some cash out for a club that DC does.
It’s the only time I ever need to use real money.

Do you still use cash frequently?
Does anyone (other than my parents 🙈) still use cheques??!

First class stamp yesterday for £1.10p. Posting a letter as well as using cash are both becoming novelties

Fucking hell £1.10! Didn't realise it had gone up again. Although even worse than the cost is the fact the letter probably won't arrive until next week. If it's anything like the post around here we only get mail at best twice a week.

CrunchyCarrot · 20/09/2023 11:55

I only keep some in my purse for a taxi in an emergency.

Phos · 20/09/2023 11:58

Had to pay cash at a fish and chip place the other day as their machines were down. Other than that I paid cash at the recycled uniform sale at DDs school. I’ll consider paying in cash for smaller purchases at independent shops but i try to avoid cash only businesses usually.

I use cash quite a lot. Some businesses are going cash only now because of the amount of money they lose paying card companies.

Is this really true? If there were two businesses side by side doing broadly the same thing I would go to the one that took card because it is just more practical. I take more taxis now that black cabs accept card payments.

I feel like the extra business that being able to take card brings negates the cost surely?

I took out cash to go to the chip shop a month ago and I still have the £5 change in my bag. The chip shop is next to other fast food places and we would usually buy there because we don't have to go to the cash machine.

Use cash every day for everything. Always have paper money around to give to the grandkids when I go to see them or if they pop here unexpectedly and for their holidays. Good for them to physically handle and spend the money, count the change etc. so they can see the value of money and true cost of items. Puts things into more perspective I think.

Big items and petrol go on the card.

AuntieMarys · 20/09/2023 12:03

Two or three years ago. Everything goes on credit card and paid off at the end of the month

HouseofHolbein · 20/09/2023 12:05

When I go to pub quiz 😊 if we win we get a cash prize which pays for the next few weeks

Goldmember · 20/09/2023 12:07

When I got my nails done 6 weeks ago. I hate paying by cash so much that I stopped having my nails done.

EquallyDetermined · 20/09/2023 12:08

Starting to use it more again, I've noticed some small shops have put in a min £5 for card transactions recently. Pay for the pub quiz in cash every week. I always have some on me.

PurpleMonkeys · 20/09/2023 12:08

Least time was yesterday, I have my kid some change for the sweet shop.
Before that, Saturday, spent £1.50 on some charity biscuits.
Before that, September 7th, £10 at hairdressers.

macshoto · 20/09/2023 12:08

In Japan on holiday so every day.

Normally, back in the UK about every fortnight to pay my local taxi firm - in an area where there's little/no mobile phone reception paying by card wouldn't work

champagneplanet · 20/09/2023 12:09

Weekly for DCs after school activities.

Occasionally for a one of the takeaways we use that doesn't do card payments.

That's it really, other than the odd £1 here or there for DDs school things.

One of Katie Hopkins videos popped up on my feed a few days ago about the demise of cash and it was quite interesting (she's against a 100% digital currency).

My DM loves a cheque @CharliesAngles

BitOutOfPractice · 20/09/2023 12:10

My hairdresser only takes cash. Other than that, never.

"A lot". Really!!! Only one I know is a local barber and I suspect that's a dodgy business (not only cause is the cash only)

alerp · 20/09/2023 12:12

I use it a few times a term for the cake sale, and we'll need a pound for Jeans for Genes day this week. Always have some in my bag and have a stash at home for tradesmen or emergencies.

Honeyroar · 20/09/2023 12:13

I have a little coffee shop. I’d say I receive 2/3 card payments and 1/3 cash (I’d say men use cash more, women use Applepay!). I tend to use cash more nowadays myself as I get charged paying it into the bank and it’s a faff going there. I live on a small holding and pay cash to farmers that do bits and bobs for us. (I always find it a bit ironic that farmers often get payments from the government but want paying in cash)

Lorrymum · 20/09/2023 12:13

Yesterday, coffee shop wi fi was out. Lots of very cross, cashless, customers who couldn't have a coffee fix.

User17439824 · 20/09/2023 12:13

We were on holiday in County Durham about a month ago and a lot of the smaller shops preferred cash so we did use it sometimes

Caffeineislife · 20/09/2023 12:14

I use cash quite often, DC's playgroup is cash only, the local music class is cash only. DH's personal trainer only takes cash, our cleaner prefers cash. We live in a place with a lot of independents (butcher, greengrocer, baker, indie clothes shop etc) and a weekly market and some of them are cash only. A lot of our takeaways (again independents) have gone back to cash only. The local chicken shop gives you an unofficial discount (rounds down to the nearest £) if you are paying cash.

I use it a lot, I find it easier to keep check of what I'm spending.

Same here. Last time I used it was this morning.

wayyour · 20/09/2023 12:16

Can't remember the last time I used it, but the last time I had some notes I got rid of them in the self service till at the supermarket as I kept forgetting to pay them in when in the city, and there's no local bank here now.

RedRobyn2021 · 20/09/2023 12:20

No I don't, I haven't ever really carried around money, opting to use card. I remember when I used to go on nights out in my teens and early 20s I'd bring cash but that was before contactless became a thing.

I used money for a stay and play group the other day. We actually have a bowl of pound coins for this purpose.

Maddy70 · 20/09/2023 12:22

I pay my cleaner in cash but that's the only withdrawal I make

CharliesAngles · 20/09/2023 12:23

Funny how a few of you are saying your DH/men tend to use cash more - it’s true here too. If we’re out together, DH often uses cash.

@champagneplanet I have just checked (hahaha 😂) our cheque book, the last cheque written was 4 years ago, to the month!

Also shocked that a first class stamp is £1.10.
I have a part used book of them stuck on the side of the fridge and it just says 1st so really had no clue as to what they individually cost.

I used cash to pay for a taxi (minicab not Uber) just this morning.
