Last time you used cash?

Went to the ATM this morning, as needed to get some cash out for a club that DC does.
It’s the only time I ever need to use real money.

Do you still use cash frequently?
Does anyone (other than my parents 🙈) still use cheques??!

I get a taxi a couple of times a week. Although I book through and app I always pay cash after one time getting an emergency taxi and paying on the app only to be ranted at the whole journey by the driver who said they have to wait a week to receive the card payments and then they have a fee taken off.

ShadowPuppets · 20/09/2023 13:07

On Monday, our regular playgroup which asks for a £1 contribution for the tea and coffee fund.

I hardly ever pay for things in cash but when I do it’s a £1/£2 thing. I couldn’t tell you the last time I paid for something over £5 in cash, it’ll definitely be years. We have a pot of £1 & £2 coins in the house for mufti days, bake sales etc. We probably wind up topping it up with £30 every three months or so.

Is this really true? If there were two businesses side by side doing broadly the same thing I would go to the one that took card because it is just more practical. I take more taxis now that black cabs accept card payments.

I feel like the extra business that being able to take card brings negates the cost surely?

I took out cash to go to the chip shop a month ago and I still have the £5 change in my bag. The chip shop is next to other fast food places and we would usually buy there because we don't have to go to the cash machine.

A nail tech and a beauty salon I use both are cash only. They're always fully booked so it obviously works for them.

I used to run a business so I appreciate the costs involved in having a card machine. Convenient yes, but those little percentages all add up. I'm happy to pop to a cash machine on the way to somewhere to help support someone's business.

Maybe having a slightly higher charge for customers wishing to use card would be a good solution.

I use cash maybe once every few months. I actually tracked down a cash machine yesterday to draw out some out for a bake sale but when I got there it was pay by card 😬.

Before This I think I used cash at some point during the summer holidays when I visited my parents, who live in the sticks. Their local takeaway only takes cash. The only other time I remember using cash in the past year or so was to pay the locksmith as he charges less cash-in-hand.

StColumbofNavron · 20/09/2023 13:22

But why should card users be penalised for convenience too? I'm not against it necessarily, I am all about convenience so I would just suck up the cost. If there was another nail salon nearby that accepted card then I would do that instead. I realise all of this is anecdata and convenience is subjective - my card is another's cash. If there was a service, product I needed/wanted and I could only get it for cash then I would suck that up to. E.g. if that is the only salon in town and my options are not getting nails done or paying cash then obviously I take out the cash.

I literally spend more because I can pay by card (again, anecdata I know).

We even have card machines at our school PTA.

I wonder if where we live/work makes a difference. I can see that if signal is an issue then that would be tricky. We are quite central in London and I am work in an industry with long hours and where convenience is prized - in most instances that looks like Apps that you can directly use Apple Pay on for most things. So my 'normal' is skewed to that.

Willmafrockfit · 20/09/2023 13:23

my dm is very anti using a card for low amounts.
she was giving me cheques when in covid i did her shopping, that was ok as i could scan them into my app on my phone,
i dont do an awful lot of shopping and have to withdraw money to spend at the greengrocers, card only over a fiver, and then i normally spend more than a fiver there!

Digimoor · 20/09/2023 13:26

Used cash this week for the window cleaner, local cafe & tattoo parlour

SpecialSpaghetti · 20/09/2023 19:15

We've got a pot of assorted coins in the car for parking and shopping trolleys.
DC football coach prefers cash.
We leave cash for the cleaners.
That's about it really.

MintJulia · 20/09/2023 19:25

This morning at the butcher. I use cash all the time. ApplePay hasn't taken over our area yet 😊

LBFseBrom · 11/12/2023 21:27

I use cash occasionally. I like it, will feel sad if it completely disappears in my lifetime.

Jellycatspyjamas · 11/12/2023 21:32

I paid for lunch with a friend today in cash. I run a small business and some of my clients pay in cash so I always have cash around the house (put it through the books but don’t bank it les anyone suggest a tax dodge). I like having cash handy though I do use Apple Pay a lot too.

tuvamoodyson · 11/12/2023 22:41

Nicesalad · 11/12/2023 22:42

DaughterNo2 · 11/12/2023 22:46

Tonight1 · 11/12/2023 22:47

It's been a while however I did pay with supermarket by cash relatively recently! I think I only have about £10 on me. I've got used to card tapping however on the rare occurance when they ask for insert and pin I have to think for a few secs

SoozyWoozy5 · 11/12/2023 22:48

I actually can’t remember.. months ago, at least

snowgal · 11/12/2023 22:51

I'm trying to use cash more, the local shops appreciate a cash payment, it feels like a more real transaction, plus if we stop using cash or will eventually disappear and then his will "bankless" individuals be able to operate?

CoodleMoodle · 11/12/2023 22:59

I paid for a few things with cash in Poundland the other day, because my DC's school had their Christmas event and every stall was 50p, £1, etc, and we had absolutely no change in the house at all. The lady on the till was so lovely and gave me a real mix when I asked if she'd mind it mostly being coins!

UsingChangeofName · 11/12/2023 23:05

Today, as part of a Christmas present I was wrapping.
But I use cash all the time.
Donation for coffee at meetings.....parking occasionally......charity collections....... collections at work....... my (mobile) hairdresser .......my cleaner ......... when I am buying things for less than about £5 or £6 ........ at the numerous Christmas Fairs I've been to over the last few weeks.

smilesup · 11/12/2023 23:09

I use cash a lot. It weirdly makes me spend less
Today I paid cash in Aldi, the corner shop, for a pint and in a birthday card.

boozeclues · 11/12/2023 23:09

I can’t actually remember.. I bought a colleague a sandwich the other day and they just pinged me the money back…

Even pps who have said arcades etc, it’s all done on preloaded cards etc at my local seaside town.

we will be getting 10x Ten pound notes for DS’s main Christmas present though - which we will probably take back (and struggle to spend!) as he will want to buy things off the internet with it anyway!!!

boozeclues · 11/12/2023 23:10

My milkman, window cleaner and bin cleaner are all payed by standing order.

Icopewhenihope · 11/12/2023 23:11

Very very rarely which is really sad.

Borborygmus · 11/12/2023 23:12

It was so long ago that I really can't remember.
