Last time you used cash?

Went to the ATM this morning, as needed to get some cash out for a club that DC does.
It’s the only time I ever need to use real money.

Do you still use cash frequently?
Does anyone (other than my parents 🙈) still use cheques??!

Today. I now draw cash each week. Use only cash unless online. I spend far less easier to watch what we spend.

Precipice · 11/12/2023 23:17

I use cash almost exclusively, outside of online transactions and bills.

I remember the last time I used a card in person (last week, paying for an arcade game at the bowling alley, since it froze mid-way through my entering cash into it, spitting out some but not giving me the rest back, so I could neither proceed nor go ahead and had to go up to the desk about it), but I don't remember the time before that.

I use half cash / half card to keep cash going for the vulnerable elderly, homeless, plus keep an eye on my spending Once we go totally cashless, the banks; government will have total control over our spending, be telling us what to spread our money on, eg holidays- oh no you have used your fuel allowance for the year.. cash is legal tender & it’s not a crime to use it. I always get cash at Christmas & birthdays so what I am not allowed to put in the bank now?

Strawberrycheesecake7 · 11/12/2023 23:19

This morning to get the bus. My regular bus only takes cash for some reason.

mantyzer · 11/12/2023 23:23

I am finding more places are cash only. A brilliant independent restaurant, pub quiz, local craft group, family event at weekend.

margotrose · 11/12/2023 23:24

Saturday to pay for a birthday cake.

Chuckiee · 11/12/2023 23:31

I used cash in 3 of the 4 shops I bought things in today and for the parking pay and display machine. I use a card for online payments, in supermarkets and for petrol. Everywhere else I prefer to take a certain amount of cash out with me and to only spend that

VeryQuaintIrene · 11/12/2023 23:34

Both, and also cards and PayPal. Different methods are good in different circumstances. Barclays have been an absolute pain when I try to use my App (they don't like me living most of the time in the US and flag every damn thing as fraudulent) so that's one method I tend not to use, though would if it were the easy process they promise.

DuesToTheDirt · 11/12/2023 23:34

A few hours ago, buying milk in a small shop (they take cards for any level of purchase, but I pay cash to avoid them getting card charges).

I have a couple of regular tradespeople that only take cash, which is a bit inconvenient.

HanSB · 11/12/2023 23:43

I have a business that used to be over 80% cash and now it’s less than 1%. Personally the only cash I ever use is for school donations. Have had an emergency £10 in my bag for over a year and not had to use it, I use Apple Pay for majority

Wolvesart · 11/12/2023 23:51

In a taxi, I generally pay by card but - incredible as this seems - the one place without a reliable signal is the hospital drop off zone. The taxis literally have to park in the area they aren’t meant to to get a signal. Generally, I’d go by bus in the months I was visiting my recently deceased father but there were a few times when I was dashing there.

DuesToTheDirt · 11/12/2023 23:56

Oh, and at the weekend in a small specialist shop I tried to pay by card and try as he might the guy couldn't get the card machine working. He said I could just come back another time and pay, but it's a bit inconvenient for me to get to the shop so I went to a cashpoint and got cash out to pay him.

Mt61 · 12/12/2023 09:19

I certainly wouldn’t be paying tradesmen cash so they can cook their books! Plus I would want an invoice & receipt for guarantee for the work. I have never known a homeless person have a card reader - so how are they meant to get a drink, sandwich, etc? So leaving cash in place is no bad thing!

OceanicBoundlessness · 12/12/2023 09:49

Cash as much as possible.

I find one thing that's difficult is that things have become so expensive that we need to carry more cash than recently, which is bigger loss of we were to lose it.

Nicesalad · 12/12/2023 09:56

You can get a receipt when you pay cash.

Rieety · 12/12/2023 09:59

Years ago, I use card for everything.

notacooldad · 12/12/2023 10:00

I use it quite a bit.
I have to go to the bank this morning as Dh gave me £2.5k to go into the housekeeping account. To be fair he normally transfers money across.
I used cash at a cafe on Sunday as they only accept cash. Again on Sunday I paid for my friends kids to have an ice cream at the interval at the pantomime, again cash only.

sashh · 12/12/2023 10:02

My local community shop only takes cash.

jollygreenpea · 12/12/2023 10:09

Cash is my preferred payment, I use it as often as possible. When covid restrictions were lifted I went back to cash.

Iateallllllthepies · 12/12/2023 10:49

Right now paying for a taxi. I use cash a lot.

Augustus40 · 12/12/2023 10:56

It was on radio 4 the other day that cash use has really increased after the past year.

Augustus40 · 12/12/2023 10:58

People are using it to buy food shopping.

Willmafrockfit · 13/12/2023 06:01

i seem to have a purse full of coins, i used it on a bus two days in a row, £2 per journey
and bought a christmas present from a shop that was cash only yesterday,

GreenMarigold · 13/12/2023 06:06

On Monday, at my children’s school Christmas fair and again to buy an item off Facebook marketplace. Most weeks I use it for my daughter’s riding lessons and the occasional takeaway but that’s about it.

TabbyM · 13/12/2023 16:11

Yesterday in local shop
