Thread 10 - TalkLair: “The candle flame gutters. Its little pool of light trembles.”

Continuation of previous threads (thread 9).

Although the nights are gradually drawing in, the new lair of JTT escapees is all cosy and homey inside. The hearth is glowing, the walls covered in dubious artwork, books by non-approved authors line the shelves, rugs are down on the floors (and assorted pets curled up on them).

We just won’t mention the gnawed bones of our prey over there in the corner of the cave…

@duc748 - If you don't want to wait months for an NHS appointment, that might be worth a one-off appointment with a podiatrist.

I'm a bit disappointed, though, that the problem wasn't caused by the stilettos you wore to the LWS event.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 08/10/2023 22:45

Good sideboard - plenty of cubbyholes.

Ever had that thing where you're using GM as a pedestrian, and the arrows pointing in the right direction and everything, but you were 5 minutes from your destination, and then you look again, and you're 8 minutes away, and you think, WTAF?

All the time. On my phone the 'me' dot has a fuzzy blue cone that is presumably meant to be either a 'wake' behind me or 'field of view' ahead. But there's no consistency in which way it faces, so I have to walk far enough for the dot to move before I can work out which is the right way.

Glad it's not just me! 😀But I'm sure the exercise did me good. 6 years I've lived here, and never got round to visiting Liverpool, it's not that far away (but Manchester is nearer), so it was nice to scratch that itch. I will return. I reckon about 1971 (shudders) was the last time I was there.

Fascinating programme on PBS tonight - available on YouTube as it was originally broadcast yesterday. It's about identity politics and very much worth watching.

Sorry to hear about your foot troubles @duc748! I hope you're feeling better today.

When I use Google Maps, I often do a little half-twirl to check that the blue viewing cone is looking where I think it is looking, to get my bearings. Sometimes I find that I was facing in the completely opposite direction to what I thought! Also, there's a newish feature on GM called something like Live View, you hold up your phone and it does an augmented reality kind of thing with arrows telling you which way to go. Here's one I just did from my back garden.

For those who remember him, darkhorse has passed away. RIP.

Tricyrtis2022 · 09/10/2023 18:23

Thanks for letting us know, angelico. From what I saw of him, darkhorse was a decent bloke. RIP.

CyanCrystalViolet · 09/10/2023 18:23

That’s such sad news. I remember him fondly. RIP darkhorse.

Gonners · 09/10/2023 18:40

Just done a Freecycle thing and feel enormously satisfied. An elderly woman I work for wanted to find a home for a huge jade plant (Crassula ovata) but didn't know how to go about it. That was yesterday. I said I'd put it on Freecycle and did when I got home last night. This morning there was a message from someone who wanted it and the very pleasant young woman who got in touch has just been to collect it. What a great way to pass things on.

CyanCrystalViolet · 10/10/2023 16:04

Jade plants give me the heebie jeebies.

I need to freecycle a toaster my neighbour gave me when she moved out. Or maybe just dispose of it. Her flat always had an overwhelming smell of air freshener, I assume a Glade plug-in sort of thing, and somehow this has permeated the toaster to the point it stinks out my kitchen when I put the lever down, and flavours the bread.

Britinme · 10/10/2023 16:09

Sad to hear about darkhorse, a nice guy as I remember.

Freecycle is useful. There's also a set of FB groups called something like Buy Nothing which does something similar.

Tricyrtis2022 · 10/10/2023 16:16

@CyanCrystalViolet that sounds revolting. Is there some way to burn off the smell by repeatedly putting the lever down until it's gone? Maybe you could use an extension cable so you can do that outside.

I was wondering about that but I don’t have an extension cable so I’ve been reluctant to try it. The smell makes me gag. Maybe someone else can benefit from it who wouldn’t be as sensitive to it as me.

Tricyrtis2022 · 10/10/2023 16:27

How about a nearby window?

I know what you mean about those plug-in things and can't stand them either. The smell makes me feel ill.

CyanCrystalViolet · 10/10/2023 16:34

How about a nearby window?

To chuck it out of? Grin

CyanCrystalViolet · 10/10/2023 16:35

Just watched the video of Starmer getting glitter-bombed. Security seemed very slow to respond. Not keen on him but must’ve been very scary.

Tricyrtis2022 · 10/10/2023 16:39

To chuck it out of?

Now there's an idea!

CyanCrystalViolet · 10/10/2023 16:39

I’m working from bed with a heat pad today thanks to endo. Kasper has been by my side the whole time, apart from a brief interlude where he caught (and ate) a fly for which I was most grateful.
