The biggest news story of the year is about someone who has already written books about all the stuff he has done. I will be surprised if Dispatched can say one thing I didn't already know.

I assumed it was going to be about the systemic issues in the comedy industry with RB (and others) being examples of what predatory men have got away with

Yes, think highly likely it will be this. I’m guessing he will have been investigated alongside others in his industry. He’s never hidden his sexual promiscuity, so I can’t see that a lot of the stuff they have on him is news. And most definitely won’t take up 90 minutes. He’s hardly an A lister - A lot of people have never even heard of him.

Wow. So the ‘fair game’ argument. For opinions on appearance and hairstyles, sure. For calling someone in the public eye a rapist, absent any evidence at all, not so much.

It's a response to your emotive nonsense about "how would you feel if it was your family member!"

Russell Brand's family members have seen media furores over his "wild man" behaviours many times before, mostly self-created stuff like harassing old men about their granddaughter's sex life.

A family member like him, I'd be rolling my eyes about, not crying over.

As an aside, did anyone watch Never Mind The Buzzcocks a few weeks ago? I don't normally watch it these days. The singer from McFly was on telling a story about how a mum came backstage and gave a pic of her daughter to security who was a model, and how they both basically came for sex and how he liked the mum. Everyone was laughing and he told the story as if it was acceptable these days, and it's just NOT!!! I was actually expecting some backlash in the media but nothing was mentioned. Gross men exploiting their fans. I'm not saying it wasn't consensual BTW.

I think you've hit something important thete @Summerslimtime. I'm feminist to my last bone but where do we draw the line? If a mother debases herself enough to proffer herself and her daughter for sex, do we still target the man for taking them up on it?

Do we take the stance that the women involved are victims of a disgusting patriarchal system that has taught them they can only advance themselves through prostitution?

Or do we take the view that the mother ( at least) knows exactly what she is doing and is using sex to advance herself regardless of the harm to her daughter and feminism in general?

Or is it possible that the mother ( at least) is a sex pest and should be censured for her advance that this young man didn't entertain but used as an anecdote?

I'm not offering my opinion but genuinely asking what people think.

RampantIvy · 16/09/2023 08:39

He's the creepiest filthiest douchiest arse weasel that's ever had a platform. How he convinced any women to ever get near him is absolutely beyond me.

I agree. He is vile and deeply unattractive and seedy.

AInightingale · 16/09/2023 08:39

'Biggest news story of the year'? I'd be annoyed if I was a journalist and my entire weekend was cancelled because of some story about that twat.

Royalsrumbled · 16/09/2023 08:41

@Redebs Technically legal but questionable don't you think? She was only just legal and it is a huge age gap!

bombastix · 16/09/2023 08:41

Zero surprise. I suppose the new angle will be from the press he's actually a rapist and sex offender to some women and girls when he thought they wouldn't complain.

YetMoreNewBeginnings · 16/09/2023 08:42

Hopefully it’ll be about the cover ups that happened in the industry, and with the police.

A lovely girl I know reported a vicious rape by a famous person (Not Russell Brand, just for clarity - similar industry). She had bite marks and very obvious injuries. The police were extremely sympathetic to her, right up until she named him. One police officer outright accused her of lying and another told a story about the man visiting a local hospice in her earshot. Basically talked about what a nice guy he was. She walked out of the police station after being asked for the 7th time in the interview if she’d ever enjoyed rough sex.

The number of men who get away with rape because of a lack of evidence is always going to be high because it’s so hard to prove with no witnesses and sometimes no physical evidence.

The number of men who get away with it despite evidence because the police can be shockingly bad is a crime in itself imo.

BethDuttonsTwin · 16/09/2023 08:42

It’s actually too hard to have an educated discussion with you. Which is the whole problem here.

Not everyone is a lawyer. Maybe nip off to some lawyer groups to chat if you can't stand having to explain stuff to the hoi polloi.

Darkdiamond · 16/09/2023 08:42

Lots of 'urgh he looks so grimy' and 'typical sex addict', not to mention 'he isn't left wing anymore!' as well as 'I heard a rumour that he's prolific for it'.

None of this is evidence that someone is a rapist.

If he is guilty of the allegations, I hope that the evidence is robust enough to conduct him. If he isn't guilty, then I hope that he is exonerated quickly.

I don't know if he is guilty or not, but I do know that the judgements on this thread are all unmerited. I also know, having followed him on and off, that he doesn't present one dogmatic viewpoint. He tries to see everything through a lens of balanced transparency. His guests are not an echo chamber, but people from a wide range of backgrounds and viewpoints.

Ill agree with @Crunchymum in saying that he does go against the mainstream media and invites viewers to research the topic and come to a conclusion themselves. That has always been the crux of his message, and it doesn't go hand in hand with how mainstream media try to control certain narratives. You don't have to be a Conspiracy therorist to understand that media outlets have their own message: I learned about this in an English lesson when I was about 12.

Anyway, I can't say one way or another whether it's true or not, but the case needs to be addressed via the procedures proper. I'll reserve judgement until then.

babyproblems · 16/09/2023 08:45

This cannot be it surely. Russel brand!! Everyone knows literally every person he’s ever slept with. Come on now this is a non event

Whatswhatwhichiswhich · 16/09/2023 08:46

He’s often worked with children. He’s always given me a creepy feeling but mostly that’s because of his batshit views and conspiracy theories and how he’s actively dangerous to those who are suffering poor mental health.

VeloVixen · 16/09/2023 08:47

I remember someone on here years ago posted how they’d slept with RB. All consensual. There was some rather odd kink which made me giggle at the time but I can’t remember…..I have a hazy feeling he washed his knob before and after but I might be dreaming that!

Luana1 · 16/09/2023 08:48

How is this the news story of the year with journalists being told they are working the weekend? The entertainment industry is well known for being full
of sleazes, if speculation is true most people won’t really be all that interested 🤷🏻‍♀️

Which batshit views?

BeautifulWar · 16/09/2023 08:49

I'm really trying to be all nice and innocent until proven and all that but, I mean, come on..
He's the creepiest filthiest douchiest arse weasel that's ever had a platform. How he convinced any women to ever get near him is absolutely beyond me.

Oh @PurpleMonkeys , I agree whole heartedly. I never bought his 'Comrade' act either - always struck me as more Wolfy Smith. It just gave him an angle he thought was clever and edgy and people lapped it up 🙄

@Darkdiamond ,

I think a number of industry cover ups and criminality at a high level has been exposed by good investigative journalism.

The idea that nothing should be put in the public eye before a police enquiry and court case would allow a lot of people currently doing time to have never been accused.

A good expose will have been very carefully face checked. Ultimately, the organisation has to be able to defend itself against a libel case. This type of program won’t damage any potential criminal trial (if, of course, there are criminal allegations against any individual or organisation).

I suspect this thread will get taken down but the vast majority of posters have not made any criminal allegations against any individual, they have just given a character opinion of a high profile celebrity, which is entirely legal.

I am thinking this too.

Unless it's part of a bigger picture.

Whatswhatwhichiswhich · 16/09/2023 08:52

@Darkdiamond @Chaniya go look at his YouTube channel, he’s very vocal about it Confused

Shitsandwiches · 16/09/2023 08:53

If RB is a serial rapist then he's been doing it in plain sight by being so whacky and open about his promiscuity and sex addiction and now addressing his fans directly about it - bit like Michael Jackson creating all those absurd stories about himself sleeping in gas chambers and being generally weird, preparing his defence for when the truth came out - 'look what they're doing, it's another conspiracy against me' type of thing.

But still - mainstream rapists and predators is kind of the norm now unfortunately, so for all this build up and speculation it's either a massive story involving lots of others, or it's about something completely different altogether.

I'm still going to watch it!

LaaDeeDa321 · 16/09/2023 08:53

None of you actually know what the story is yet are commenting that it’s not interesting enough for you and if you believe it’s true or not. You people are not real. Get a fucking hobby the lot of you.

I actually agree with you in totality.

I don't agree with the idea that if you don't like how someone looks or their political views don't align with yours, they probly dunnit.

I'm actually all for predators being taken down and dangerous men facing the consequences of their behaviour. I'm not for declaring someone guilty because they have greasy hair or believe in less centralised government control.

WhalePolo · 16/09/2023 08:54

So if he champions free speech and ‘stay free’ on his YouTube channel, surely he can’t complain when Dispatches wants to exercise a bit of free speech about his activities?
