So it is Russell Brand

The biggest news story of the year is about someone who has already written books about all the stuff he has done. I will be surprised if Dispatched can say one thing I didn't already know.

Reading what he did to the 16 year old makes me sick and angry.

I believe them.

He says the press has come after him because they are competing with him. Really? Most people couldn’t give a shit about his YouTube channel. He is deluded.

It is revolting and so upsetting to read.

I hope some of the other male celebs who are known to be predatory are shaking in their boots this evening, knowing this might give some women the confidence to come forward about their behaviour.

Mumof118 · 16/09/2023 18:50

These accusations are extremely serious. Has he been arrested?

If not, why have we got a TV show on this? Shouldn’t this be treated with the seriousness it deserves?

Otherwise, it ends up looking like a smear campaign.

beatrix1234 · 16/09/2023 18:45

Thank you. I don’t like him either, like you I dislike “trial by media in order to fill pages” more than RB. There were many police reports against Saville before the scandal erupted , many against Weinstein (fact is there was a whole police investigation going on), same with Epstein, what solid evidence is there against RB? I’m not saying there’s any (I don’t have access to police files),once I see that I’ll be able to form an opinion. In the meanwhile I refuse to let Murdoch and their croonies form my own opinion.

From the report it looks as though many tried to make complaints over the years but just like with Epstein and Weinstein were met with powerful lawyers. They are incredibly brave. I would probably suffer in silence - and have done.

If other women came forward about my ex (and I would guess there are others both before and after me) then I would come forward too as I would feel less afraid and alone. I would definitely feel more courageous in facing the law alongside other women.

Sadly, sometimes this is the only way to get the truth out there.

This isn't trial by media, much of this has been taken to the police at one point or other.

Even if it hadn't been taken to the police who are you to tell victims what they can and cannot do with their testimony?

henlee · 16/09/2023 18:51

Bonkers that a forum like reddit is roundly condemning Brand and supporting the victims, whilst on MN there seem to be a depressing number of posters doing the opposite - much more in line with somewhere like X/twitter where people like Andrew Tate are protected.

Anyone care to speculate what's happening here?

No. Investigative reporting through through reputable news mediums, carried out by credible and skilled journalists isn't a smear campaign.

Standingchair1 · 16/09/2023 18:54

What does a man ‘addicted to sex’ do to satisfy his desires?

Yep, shocking and utterly depressing.

Mumof118 · 16/09/2023 18:55

I find it quite troubling that trial by media is allowed.

Instead of drawing my attention to the women who claim to be sexually assaulted, it’s drawing my attention to the classic ‘wrap up smear’ as described by Nancy Pelosi.

And that makes me question everything we are being told.

Allegations of rape should be discussed in the police station first and then charges brought. The media can share the outcome with us at the appropriate time.

“Reputable news mediums” like the Murdoch newspapers? 🤣😂

BeverForget · 16/09/2023 18:56

@henlee
MN has been seen as a politically influential platform for a fair while now.
Hence the amount of troll accounts supporting all sorts of nonsense, including rapist Brand.
The 'Mumsnet biscuit question' genuinely gets focus-grouped now.
(McVities digestive, obviously)

These are the same journalists that brought us Covid and Covid vaccines. They work for whoever is paying. I don’t think there is such a thing as a credible journalist these days.

ScottishIceCream · 16/09/2023 18:57

LetMeEnfoldYou · 16/09/2023 18:43

Why now is a stupid tinfoil hat question.

Why now? Because they've spent a long time pursuing facts, finding people to support the victims' stories, getting legal advice which takes a long time, writing the story, etc, and now all of the checks and balances are complete they're ready to publish.

Or do you think it's 'now' because he was getting ready to take down the establishment or something, with his shitty pseudo-intellectual podcast rantings...

It isn't a stupid question. Unsavoury things have been known about Russell Brand for well over ten years. So why did journalists decide three years ago to investigate him. The women involved were approached by journalists, so something prompted them to start really looking into him in 2020, rather than 2010, or whenever.

And I do hope there are journalists trying to get info now about other male celeb sexual predators who have been in plain sight for years, as a poster who replied to me earlier suggested. Rather than start in ten years time, long after the events.

The article is horrifically graphic, surprised they didn't include a trigger warning with it.

Pretty certain that RB's Youtube channel will get shut down fairly soon. So if there are any journalists reading this, take all the screengrabs and download videos now before they are gone.

Google have very low tolerance for right wing conspiracy nutters and most creators in that genre get pushed off the platform eventually. They haven't banned his content so far because it doesn't directly breach any guidelines but they will definitely cancel him after this expose.

What about left wing ‘nutters’ are they allowed?

I am 100% certain that journalists haven't been moonlighting in laboratories to develop and test viruses and vaccines.

Feel free to call me gullible for thinking that.

StBrides · 16/09/2023 19:06

@Stoic123 😆

LetMeEnfoldYou · 16/09/2023 19:06

Right so your actual question then @ScottishIceCream is why start investigating three years ago?

Who knows? They had two or three corroborating stories? They had time on hands during Covid? I seriously doubt they looked three years ahead and were able to pinpoint the perfect date to take down a shithead ex-comedian.

ThePoshUns · 16/09/2023 19:06

As much as the story is about RB I think the bigger story is that who's was all happening whilst he worked at the BBC and it sounds like it was an open secret there

Have you read the article? It's too detailed, contains too much evidence and has too many third party corroborations to be fabricated. Hopefully the police will release a statement soon to suggest an arrest has been made or is en route.

While it's important to remember that Murdoch owns certain newspapers, it doesn't mean that everything they report is bogus.

And Dispatches is also credible

Yes, because the police do so well in dealing with rape cases, don't they?

Less than 2 in 100 rapes recorded by police in 2022 resulted in a charge that same year.

He didn't just work at BBC. Was pretty prolific at ch4
