The biggest news story of the year is about someone who has already written books about all the stuff he has done. I will be surprised if Dispatched can say one thing I didn't already know.

It feels a bit like when PS announced he had an inappropriate relationship. The media assumed all the 'little people' would be shocked but most people had known for years.
I don't think anyone will be surprised by any story that comes out about RB. What levels of behaviour do people expect from a very promiscuous addict (per his own admission)? MNers have been sharing their stories about sleeping with RB for years.
It also makes Katherine Ryan's veiled references to a predator just seem like pre-publicity for Dispatches. They've been investigating for three years - one year ago she started mentioning someone.
I hope if there are victims they are supported and have been able to go to the police.

How is this a big news story?! Most people don’t give a crap and the others don’t even know who he is!

When in October 2022 Europeans and Americans were being told that our late queen was dying of bone cancer, British news media even just days before her death, was telling us Brits that she had, wait for this, gout. This happens rather a lot

British media respecting the medical privacy of the head of state and what she was dying of instead of telling the world. Shocking. Shouldn't be allowed. 🙄(sarcasm, in case anyone wonders).

And she might have had gout, for all you know.

Had an eye roll to the embarrassing comment you responded to.

Not just respecting privacy in regard to medical issues (yeah shock horror), but "news" in america? They don't do news, they do radical opinion shows, ie. fox "news" (a whitewashing entity, a mouthpiece for Trump (or whatever right wing lunatic is in office), watched (and believed) by millions).

Anyone that gets their "news" from america is unhinged.

Everyone on here minimising it because "everyone knows he's a rapist" ffs that is sick! If there's lots of people saying he's raped them that is seriously horrendous

Right? People are acting it it's a shame that the story isn't interesting enough rather than sparing a thought for the victims

She died in September 2022.

I like RB (not sure why). I would be sad if it were him being accused of very serious criminal stuff. Promiscuity is not a crime.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 16/09/2023 13:03

I know. It's the poster I quoted who didn't.

I love Mumsnet, it’s incredibly helpful to get immediate relevant advice on parenting and family issues. But this thread shows how dangerous social media is. There isn’t a shred of evidence on here - it’s about rumour, speculation and downright prejudice. A serial shagger must be a rapist - what utter crap is that?

im going to ask Mumsnet to take this thread down. It’s libellous and full of the kind of misinformation that riddled social media and is interpreted by some people as news. It’s not. It’s nonsense that undermines real news reporting.

Quite right. Women should only be permitted to speak about family issues. When women speak about more serious matters it is dangerous and they should not be permitted to do so. 😂😂😆😆

katsusando · 16/09/2023 13:11

Dispatches don't just put out a programme without Channel 4's legal team thoroughly vetting it and removing anything that backed up with evidence. If someone is contacted and asked to verify the allegations, they are given the right to reply. Brand has chosen not to, so if he is one of those featured, then he had the opportunity to contest yet has chosen not to.

There's also every probability that some of those whom are making the allegations have already been to the police and got precisely nowhere. The fact that this Dispatches investigation is three years in the making rather suggests they have really taken their time to properly look into this.

katsusando · 16/09/2023 13:15

Shinyandnew1 · 16/09/2023 12:50

How is this a big news story?! Most people don’t give a crap and the others don’t even know who he is!

Because it's systemic abuse of women, possibly even men, reporting sexual abuse and not being heard, and their voices being buried, while the perpetrators have remained at large to continue to abuse others.

This is why it's a big news story.

And then you add in the fact it's the entertainment industry with potentially household names, rather than just one man, whom are the perpetrators.

This is why it's a big news story.

WinterDeWinter · 16/09/2023 13:25

I think that if it were rape allegations there would already have been police involvement. I believe it will be a group of men incl RB who know each other well and are perhaps connected by agent or management and who together or separately have some kind of ‘arranged’ access to (crucially) vulnerable girls/young women (perhaps young men). And that this has been brushed under the carpet by a broadcaster. This is the societal level stuff that would interest Dispatches.

bombastix · 16/09/2023 13:25

Well Brand has got the backing of Andrew Tate. Toxic masculinity bros together

Not sure but the fact he makes a point of saying everything was consensual implies that they have. Either way, people suggesting this is boring when it's potentially that serious are grim

LaForza101 · 16/09/2023 13:33

I know a couple of women who started out in comedy in the last few years and were told that RB is a predator and to watch out for him if they were on the same bill/TV show in future.

There is also a story told about him raping a female celebrity when they were both in London during his drama school years. Plenty of male and female comedians have refused to work with him. I've heard Lee Mack particularly detests him for being an abuser.

This isn't a new story in these circles. What's interesting is why the story is breaking now. Hopefully some of the victims have been brave enough to speak out but I can understand why they didn't want to before. Nobody wants their career derailed and being cast as 'just a victim'.

iamwhatiam23 · 16/09/2023 13:34

The amount of people on here saying about how hes been honest about his sex addiction so its all ok is absolutely shocking. Its an open secret in the industry that RB is an absolute predator who is notoriously litigious if anyone says anything! To make this program and accusations they must have some pretty solid evidence of some pretty awful accusations! He is who catherine ryan was referring to in her deliberately obscure comments about a predator in the industry!

Posters aren't saying it's ok. They're saying it's not the biggest news story of the year and that it's not surprising. That's very different. The angle taken for the pre-publicity has been a disservice to any alleged victims.

squareyedannie · 16/09/2023 13:40

I don't think any of us are qualified to be Judge, Jury, and Executioner.

I'm hoping it's still about aliens.

Well I'm not in the industry and had no idea this was known! I had no idea this was who KR was referring to either. Nobody is saying rape is OK. I thought it was all in the past and consensual. So, his wife knows and goes along with it all?

SnorkeMor · 16/09/2023 13:58

I’d love it to be aliens.

Creepy men behaving badly is par for the course nowadays. The shocker is that it takes a SM shitstorm to get anything like justice, or the death of the accused before anything is allowed out.

Also, QE was dead in September 2022, so undermines the accuracy of American reporting 😉
