American Bully XL to be banned by end of year

SunshineHello · 15/09/2023 11:51

Rishi Sunak has just announced these dogs are to be banned.

Good riddance - who needs a big aggressive dog like that? It’s hardly a family pet.

I do however suspect the ven diagram of ‘people that own an American Bully XL’ and ‘people who will be interested in following this law’ may have a limited overlap however.

It's needs to have enough thrown at this when the law comes out that it's a hassle and not worth having one.

Police and council must respond if people call.

Dollyparton3 · 16/09/2023 14:28

@ehupo7 I forgot to add in my post (along the muzzle lines) my in laws looked after what we believe was a bully (the owner proudly told people his sweet dog looked intimidating but was 6 stone of softie) part of the way through the evening FIL intervened when he snapped at their small dog and the "softie" lunged at him, taking a small chunk out of his calf.

Everyone laughed it off at the time and I told FIL that I suspected the dog was a bully and would be going nowhere near our dog if we dropped round and it was at their house

Bred for size, strength and aggression, they really are like Frankenstein's monster. Evil stitched to evil stitched to evil.

The proposed measures of compulsory neutering, muzzles, leads and insurance are very welcome. But the children sharing their homes with them, and the children visiting those homes, will remain in danger.

This is still a worry. Many of the attacks took place in the home.

I hope every single one of these nasty dogs are PTS. You can’t walk a bloody king cobra on a lead so why are people so entitled to own one of these dogs

sawnotseen · 16/09/2023 14:31

This

bombastix · 16/09/2023 14:37

@Oysterbabe - that was hideous. The parents knew each other, but the mother did not mention it.

There was another incident where a mother left her son who was 9 with her bully. The dog killed him.

You cannot protect children in the home from the stupidity of adults right now.

Questionz · 16/09/2023 14:38

@Sillybillybythesea in response to your Instagram suggestion …

I joined a bully xl Facebook page out of morbid curiosity Blush. Unbelievably, it is actually not the owners who are seriously into breed characteristics and blood lines and call their dogs killer who are the scariest (although they are still pretty scary). They, at least, seem to understand their dog’s potential for danger (obviously, I guess, as that’s why they choose to have them!) and understand the need to try and train their dog to avoid drawing attention to themselves. The scariest are the seemingly normal looking parents who call their bully their baby and picture it draping over their young children with a joke caption about how it’s just destroyed its third sofa of the week. They are all genuinely bewildered and hurt by the ‘stigma’ against their dogs, and genuinely seem to believe it is actually chihuahuas and Jack Russells that are the problem. The whole place is just insane! One woman posted a video of herself and her scary dog as she shouted at some parents for letting their children play near the dog as he might not be able to control his actions around children. She then became very upset when they called her dog dangerous and later accused them of being dog racists. She seemed genuinely unhinged!

Chesneyhawkes1 · 16/09/2023 14:42

@brokenstone my neighbour has one. It didn't even bother trying to jump the fence to get into my garden. Just smashed through it 🤦‍♀️

shutterup · 16/09/2023 14:51

I went to a new nail technician, spoke about dogs etc and she said she has one of these, my knee jerk was something like 'oh my goodness they are so scary' and she said 'he's such a softie, we took him to training, had him neutered etc..., few months on and she says in the past few weeks he has become very protective of her, growls at others on walks and doesn't like it when she kisses/cuddles or plays around with her boyfriend' - I was gobsmacked and she sounded (rightfully) a little worried. I'd say she's an excellent dog owner with the training and walking three times a day, but these dogs are just NOT family pets. I'd love to hear how she feels about this news and whether there are some owners who have fears about their XL Bully's and (secretly) welcome the news. They probably wouldn't speak out on here for fear of being lynched/ridiculed, but it would be interesting to have that conversation.

sawnotseen · 16/09/2023 14:24

Are you suggesting that these dogs are PTS?

What’s the point of showing these photos? Are they meant to tug at the heart strings? I’m more upset about poor Ian Price being mauled to death on the street in front of his mum, a couple of days ago. I’m also more upset about poor little Jack Lis being killed by these montrosities.
Are these XL Bully dogs? Well then yes as soon as the ban comes in. If they aren’t neutered, muzzled, chipped, insured and on a lead in public, then if seized, yes they need to be destroyed

There is an argument for contacting social services if parents have one of these dogs in their house. I would argue that there is a child protection issue

SomeCatFromJapan · 16/09/2023 14:58

@Questionz I've just been reading the comments below a news article and the breed seems to have some kind of insane cult following that is barely literate and swears at anyone that disagrees. If it is indeed the owner not the dog then what chance to the dogs have if that's the kind of owner they get.

Stressedafff · 16/09/2023 15:11

I think any parent that allows their young child to be so up in a dogs personal space, lying all over them etc need social services involvement.
People are that damn stupid they don’t seem to realise that a dog is an animal and can turn at any given time.

Agree. There seems to be a serious lack of intelligence, insight and impulse control in this group. Not a great combination with 60kg dogs that are literal weapons!

sawnotseen · 16/09/2023 14:31

This

Bullshit.

If they’re that susceptible to minimal human displays of emotion they’re not suitable to inhabit the same spaces as humans, and yes I would support pts those cute little pups you posted pictures of if they’re from a line of dogs breed for nothing but strength and aggression.

These are animals. Animals with a completely different set of behaviours and view of the world. The dogs themselves have no opinion on who or what they attack.

I don’t feel bad about the opinions I hold, the people who have bought into the idea a dog like this in the first place hold all the responsibility for whatever fate has in store. These dogs aren’t a natural evolutionary occurrence, they’ve been bred specifically to damage. And bred so irresponsibly it practically ensures that the dogs themselves are susceptible to horrific health issues, including mental health which for obvious reasons aren’t easily identifiable in dogs.

….and seem deadly serious in making comparisons with racism. This is dog racism apparently.

Hear hear👏👏 those pictures just tug at my anger chord now. As @Fififafa said it's more upsetting for the families of the victims whe we're attacked. My neighbour Ian's mom who saw the attack is 89yo. Her heartache tugs my heartstrings, not a stupid dog pic

iamwhatiam23 · 16/09/2023 16:36

@sawnotseen those pictures are of English bulldogs not XL bullys!

Alexandra2001 · 16/09/2023 17:25

@sawnotseen Yes, they are dogs, 1000s of dogs are PTS every year, we kill millions of cute looking lambs and pigs...

I'd rather protect people, inc children, from these things, then have terrifying deaths, just imagine such a thing?

Standingchair1 · 16/09/2023 17:49

Because administration and enforcement of dog licensing would cost much more than the revenue it would generate. And apparently our police are already so over-stretched the can’t investigate house burglaries.

MelodiousThunk · 16/09/2023 18:11

There’s a public Bully XL Facebook group which I can’t quite believe isn’t a parody. Would someone really name their dogs Uzi and Tyson and then claim they wouldn’t hurt a fly? And don’t get me started on the spelling and grammar.

Uzi, Tyson, Rolex, Karma, Killa and Rambo wouldn’t hurt a fly! They’re big softies!

If an English bulldog attacked a child I am pretty sure I would be able to intervene. If it were an XL Bully I am sure I would be dead.

Seychal · 16/09/2023 19:14

Deaths of UK individuals by dog attacks in the last 24 months.

  • XL Bullies - 10
  • Other breeds - 7
  • Unconfirmed - 2
Boudicasbeard · 16/09/2023 21:44

The other breed are mostly American Bulldogs and Staffies. If you got rid of all the pit bull terrier breeds then the death rate would be super low!
