Which foods do you rarely see on menus now? I was watching some old adverts on YouTube for Little Chef and such which made me think of this.

Do you still get melon as a starter? I used to love that as a child. Also a glass of orange juice as a starter. I went to a hotel in around 2010 and they still had that as an option on the menu. I found it rather charming.

Haven't RTwholeFT but I used to work in one particular restaurant in the late 90s or very early 2000s and can still remember some of the menu, most notably the starters and puddings. Some of these would have been on the lunch menu, some the evening a la carte, some Sunday lunch.

STARTERS

Avocado and prawns (quarter avo cut into a fan shape, prawns with marie rose sauce)
Prawn cocktail
Fan of melon with strawberries
Vegetable soup (made with chicken stock)
Tomato, lentil and ham soup (which I still make to this day)
Seafood salad (we would cook a whole salmon and loads of cod fillets and serve a small chunk of each plus some prawns with marie rose sauce and a bit of side salad)
Fruit cocktail (from a tin)
Deep fried brie with cumberland sauce
Deep fried breaded mushrooms stuffed with garlic butter
Deep fried breaded mushrooms stuffed with pate
Pate with melba toast and some sort of chutney

MAINS:

Chicken Maryland (breaded supreme of chicken, breaded deep fried half banana and pineapple ring)
Chicken kiev
Surf & turf (steak with a couple of king prawns)
Lasagne
Smoked haddock poached in milk with onions
Steak and onion pie (cooked in large trays with a pastry lid and served up in squares, school dinner-style)
Battered cod or whiting and chips
Salmon fillet
Turbot (only on the dinner menu when the owner got a good price)
Something we called beef burgers but were actually more like huge meatballs roasted in a big tray with a gravy like sauce, they were AMAZING
Nut roast (frozen individual portions - the only vegetarian option)
Sunday roast was always turkey and ham, roast beef or 1/2 a roast chicken

PUDDINGS:

Black forest gateau (frozen)
Chocolate gateau (frozen - very much like Sarah Lee)
Strawberry gateau (frozen)
Lemon meringue pie (frozen)
Fruit salad (apples, pears, grapes, pineapple, kiwi, plums, strawberries etc etc all chopped and swimming in stock syrup - it was lovely)
Selection of ice cream (one scoop each of strawberry, vanilla and chocolate)
Banana split
Apple pie (home made) with ice cream
Apple sponge and custard
Jam sponge and custard
Creme caramel (I used to make them in teacups)
Pavlova with strawberries or some of the fruit salad
Home made xmas pudding at xmas but we needed so much of it, we made it in giant logs that we cooked in the big steamer and sliced up to serve with custard

Coke floats, so retro and delicious. Frankie and Bennys brought them back on their retro menu few months back!

Whitewolf2 · 10/09/2023 20:40

Steak and kidney pie, presumably people don’t like the idea of eating kidneys now.

I miss fried bread with a full English. I don’t approve of hash browns.

YewTree84 · 10/09/2023 20:41

Banana split!

Does anyone remember the chain restaurant Fatty Arbuckle's? They had the best chargrilled burgers. I still miss them. I had a chargrilled burger the other day and if was very nice but not Fatty Arbuckle's nice.

Yes, someone was electrocuted and died in my local one.

Our local favourite restaurant does an all day breakfast with fried soda bread, fried potato bread and a hash brown. So so good.

I really miss Bombay duck in Indian restaurants. I'm sure I read somewhere that it had been banned...

Never had it till I started going for a curry with my brother and his friends. BD was my now husbands favourite. It was banned I believe for health reasons but you can buy BD online and cook it yourself. I liked it crispy and slightly oily, some places had a fairly dry version which wasn't quite as nice.

Rhum Baba was my mum's fave. A sort of doughnutty thing in a puddle of sweet syrup. I think Nigella has a recipe.

I have an old bero recipe book with a recipe for this.

Prawn cocktail

Blimey, they are everywhere where I live - it's the starter I have most often

EverythingYouDoIsaBalloon · 10/09/2023 18:55

Veal. For obvious reasons, and it's quite correct that it's not considered an acceptable dish any more. It didn't half taste nice though.

I love veal 😋

Fireangels · 10/09/2023 20:49

A lemon filled with lemon sorbet

This is still made by a company called Snowcrest that is owned by my uncle. It’s made from the lemon pulp and skins left over from making lemon curd.

Eton Mess is my absolute favourite dessert, I always order it if it's on the menu. 😋

Mine too, but I can't find it anywhere! 🙁

BeefSpa · 10/09/2023 20:53

I just saw this on the menu at a creperie just outside the Sacre Coeur today.

Half an avocado filled with prawns Marie Rose, which I remember finding incredibly exciting and exotic as a child in the mid-80s.

We have this at home sometimes, yum!!

Loaded potato skins 😋

I came on to say these.
And my mum used to love knickerbocker glories

808KateO · 10/09/2023 20:55

Avocado vinaigrette
Chicken Maryland - was often on Indian menus, for that one family member that couldn't cope with a wee bit of spicy
Vol-au-vents (usually with some kind of creamy onion and mushroom filling)
Cordon Bleu escalope - I was way too old when I realised it wasn't Gordon Blue.

Your point wasn’t very clear, given the list of food. And indeed many of the lost dishes that are deeply unhealthy.

It would be good to have a thread discussing food that isn’t derailed by handwringing over people’s diets. The rest of MN is full of it.

You're the one who's hand wringing and derailing. You levered 'deeply unhealthy', 'deep fried' and 'sugary' into a casual comment I made about old-school restaurant menus.

TheFifthTellytubby · 10/09/2023 20:57

An Italian restaurant we used to visit as students in the 80s (on the rare occasions we could afford to!) served a fabulous Sicilian dessert called Cassata - a sort of cake made from ricotta cheese and liqueur, with a very distinctive flavour. Never been able to find it since. Maybe I'll have to go all the way to Sicily to enjoy it again!

menopausalbloat · 10/09/2023 20:58

I remember trying Black Forest gateaux at my dm's wedding. I thought I'd gone to heaven!

I mourn the passing of Little Chef for this very reason.

JaneorEleven · 10/09/2023 20:59

Fried Camembert with a sweet sauce that came on the side. Maybe with Melba toast.

Well, no, I was pointing out how odd your comment was, given the nature of much of the food under discussion, including those on the list you quoted. But you know that!

never see whitebait, or garlic mushrooms on starter lists anymore

I'd forgotten about garlic mushrooms! I loved those.

Not very date-friendly, though. :)
