Important query for the ramen community

Does anyone add fresh toppings to instant ramen as suggested by the picture on the front of the packet? Eg pickles vegetables, spring onion, an egg, etc?

Or is that just mad and unnecessary because instant ramen is perfect and complete just as it is?

The only thing I add is chilli flakes. Then it’s perfection.

DH does add spring onion and occasionally peppers but he is a strange man who eats Dominos pizza with cutlery so never mind him.

misscupcakes · 08/09/2023 12:56

I do sometimes, usually an egg or spring onions.

BasicPumpkinSpice · 08/09/2023 12:57

Yes. I always add veg and occasionally meat.

If I'm making "proper" ramen, I add steamed or stir fried veg and sometimes an egg. I don't always use the seasoning sachets, though. Sometimes I'll use a fresh sauce.

SeminalAlbum · 08/09/2023 12:58

Sweetcorn. Egg.

AffIt · 08/09/2023 13:07

I discovered something new recently which has, as the kids would say, levelled up my instant ramen experience.

When cooking, add some cheese (ideally grated, but a couple of of bits of pre-sliced Gouda that you found in the back of the fridge will also do), a tin of sweetcorn and a big dollop of kimchi.

Top with a boiled egg, spring onions and chilli flakes or shichimi togarashi (if you haven't come across this, then I implore you, do. It's life-changing).

Magnificent!

whatapity · 08/09/2023 13:08

Egg or sliced spring onions, sometimes fresh kimchi

NannyR · 08/09/2023 13:10

I do for a quick one pot camping meal, I add a splash of soy sauce and a splash of sesame oil, some chopped spring onion and red pepper and a handful of chopped salted peanuts. It makes it feel like a meal rather than a hot snack.

passthesugar · 08/09/2023 13:11

Well this is a revelation

Always.
Broccoli, spring onions, lettuce or pak choi, mushrooms, prawns or cooked chicken sometimes chilli, lime or sesame oil. Nori seaweed.
My favourite comfort lunch.

tt9 · 08/09/2023 13:33

if you are talking about the ones that come in cups... usually no

if you are talking about the ones in packets one makes on the hob - always. actually can make a pretty full on dinner with those. as a minimum while its cooking I add - veggies eg. pak choi/grated carrot, minced cooker meat/tuna/prawns if I have any. at the end, I top with fresh chillies, spring onions and a fried egg

happysunr1se · 08/09/2023 13:40

For packet ramen I always add spring onion and an egg at the very least. A fried egg or a marinated soy egg with a jammy yolk

Sturnidae · 08/09/2023 13:44

Yep. I use them as a base to make a whole meal as I prefer the texture of ramen to egg noodles and they hold up better than rice noodles. My favourite is "chicken" (veggie fake meat) and mushroom noodles with mini corn. I chuck all sorts in it though depending on what is at home.

whatapity · 08/09/2023 14:09

Another post has just reminded me that I buy packets of seaweed with chilli, and DC sprinkle that over the top. I don't personally eat that so forgot.

JanglingJack · 08/09/2023 14:12

Spring onions and a nice crispy pepper. Never an egg - but that's my personal choice. Fresh chillies if I fancy super hot

SoRainbowRhythms · 08/09/2023 14:14

I have a steady supply of drug eggs in my fridge and now cannot eat ramen without one.

TheGriffle · 08/09/2023 14:16

I usually eat my ramen with kimchi and an egg. Sometimes grated melted cheese as well depending on the flavour. I sometimes chop some crab sticks in as well if I have some.

fettuccini · 08/09/2023 14:17

Well...I add cheese. But I have mine on toast so..

mindutopia · 08/09/2023 14:38

I don't make a lot of instant ramen (by that, I assume you mean the sort in the packet you just add water to). But I do make it fairly regularly at home with a miso broth base and egg or udon noodles. I do add toppings - seaweed, spring onions, chillies, boiled egg, coriander, etc. depending on what I have to hand. It's very nice.

Accismus · 08/09/2023 14:43

Depends on how fancy I'm feeling. Sometimes just cook with sachet and eat, occasionally I'll see what i have in the fridge that needs using or I'll snip off some herbs from their pot on the windowsill.

Have so far never added a boiled egg like you see on the packet - however i have chucked a raw egg into the boiling water where it broke up and kind of scambled as the noodles were cooking. Was nice.

Snugglemonkey · 08/09/2023 15:09

I have not had an egg, but I do often add peas, sweetcorn, spring onions, chicken, prawns, coriander, chillies, broccoli, kimchi etc depending on what I have around. I never have them with no veg.

xsquared · 08/09/2023 15:21

I blanch some green veg with the ramen before fishing them out amd then poach the egg on top for a few minutes.
I then add chopped spring onions, a bit of sesame oil and soy sauce, and then some homemade kimchi.

CucumbersAreTheDevilsWork · 08/09/2023 15:40

I mix plain cooked ramen in with butter, lots of garlic, soy sauce, bit of noodle water to thicken the sauce and then top with parmesan, spring onions and egg. Delicious!

HappiDaze · 08/09/2023 15:51

I always add spring onions and left over chicken
