Important query for the ramen community

passthesugar · 08/09/2023 12:54

Does anyone add fresh toppings to instant ramen as suggested by the picture on the front of the packet? Eg pickles vegetables, spring onion, an egg, etc?

Or is that just mad and unnecessary because instant ramen is perfect and complete just as it is?

Yes, love adding things - usually egg and random veg like baby corn, spinach, pak choi, spring onions, peppers, mange tout etc. And chilli flakes!

Watch the youtube shorts of koreans making ramen in various 7/11 and they’re all adding: eggs, chilli, meat and more stuff at home!

Legolegends · 08/09/2023 18:46

Eggs, tofu, left over veggies. Japanese chilli oil.
Also - and sometimes only - chopped up lettuce. Adds healthy crunch. Best easy lunch ever.

Fish
Kale
Pak Choi

Considering we buy kimchi ramen by the massive box, I am just glad we are not alone!!!

We add egg, seaweed, carrots and spring onion.

Pumpernickles · 08/09/2023 20:50

I have added chopped bacon and mushrooms. I look forwards to trying other additions.

WanderingWitches · 08/09/2023 20:59

Always
Usually, boiled egg, bacon or chicken, sesame oil, black sesame seeds and nori.

BonjourCrisette · 08/09/2023 22:05

I add lots of the things listed above but one thing that is brilliant and I haven't seen anyone mention so far is a good big tablespoon of peanut butter. So tasty and adds some protein to make it more filling.

Right, so I had curry super noodles for dinner this evening (don't judge me - I have Covid😆) Was I eating ramen?

Supernoodles is just a brand name of the instant noodles. Ramen is a Japanese soup made with noodles and veggies and other bits.

Tessisme · 08/09/2023 23:56

Ah, thanks @fettuccini. I put too much water in my super noodles, so technically it was unintentional soup😅

happysunr1se · 09/09/2023 07:34

Ramen is a japanese soup with a specfic type of noodle. It's a Japanese name derived from a mispronunciation of the Chinese lai mein which means pulled noodles. Japanese people have a hard time making the L sound, it comes out closer to R so lai mein becomes Ramen.

The meat often paired with ramen is cha siu which is not a japanese name either, it's Cantonese for roast pork.

Tessisme · 09/09/2023 08:25

Thank you @happysunr1se.

I am definitely going to try ramen. There's a huge Asian supermarket a few miles down the road which sells mostly Chinese food, but also some Indian and Japanese food. I'll check in there. Really glad I saw this thread OP!

I have a steady supply of drug eggs in my fridge and now cannot eat ramen without one.

What are your eggs taking?!!!

whatapity · 09/09/2023 09:23

Good explanation @happysunr1se

I last tried super noodles (or whatever they're called) as a student and I don't think they're very similar to ramen at all. And so bland, unless they've moved on in the 20 years since I tried them.

Fannydombey · 09/09/2023 09:41

I drain all the water off and fry the cooked noodles in sesame oil with the soup base sachet thrown in, then scramble in an egg and some soy sauce. Food of the gods.

wizzywig · 09/09/2023 09:43

I'd never have gouda cheese hanging around at the back of the fridge. My ramen sounds so boring

xsquared · 09/09/2023 10:19

This is the brandI grew up with, but in our household, we called them dolly noodles in Cantonese.

Noshim Korean noodles is our current favourite brand as we like it hot and spicy. I also prefer mine with less water, so drain some.of it when it's half cooked, and then let it rest a bit so that the noodles continue to absorb some of the broth.

Check out the following ways to eat ramen by this Korean couple.

happysunr1se · 09/09/2023 11:38

Yup, doll noodles, my inlaws call them gong zai min, these r the best especially the sesame flavour in the red packet!

greenacrylicpaint · 09/09/2023 11:48

yep, usually add fresh herbs at least.
egg royale if we have a tin of it.
kimchi or other pickled veg if we have a jar on the go.
spring fresh onion.
lazy garlic.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 09/09/2023 11:51

Yes I usually add something. Quite often add frozen veg (eg: peas, sweetcorn) or chopped fresh veg (green beans, broccoli etc), will add spring onion on top and add stuff like chilli flakes, sauce, pickled ginger, kimchi etc. Sometimes add tofu or quorn or tempeh too.

catnipevergreen · 09/09/2023 12:24

If he's knew that you have in broth then no , if they're dry then I have a fried egg. DD has them with cheese ( the really spicy Korean ones ).
