Does anyone add fresh toppings to instant ramen as suggested by the picture on the front of the packet? Eg pickles vegetables, spring onion, an egg, etc?

Or is that just mad and unnecessary because instant ramen is perfect and complete just as it is?

OP posts:

chicken, spring onions, coriander. Ds likes an egg as well. He also adds soy sauce. We eat ours in ramen bowls and have ramen spoons. Much loved meal here!!

What ramen do you buy please?

I approve of the DH who eats Dominos pizza with cutlery btw!

@SoRainbowRhythms, thanks so much for that - those look delicious, and it happens that I have a massive over-supply of eggs at the moment! Bookmarked.

inloveandmarried · 08/09/2023 16:36

I add freshly chopped chilli normally but if there are spring onions and cooked chicken in the fridge I add them at the start of cooking.

Makes a nice instant meal.

notanotherclairebear · 08/09/2023 17:09

My mouth has just completely filled with saliva reading all your recipes. I know what I'll be having for dinner tonight!

I have a steady supply of drug eggs in my fridge and now cannot eat ramen without one.

I have follow up questions...

And yes OP, spring onion, egg, sweetcorn, bit of fish sauce.

What's your recipe for drug eggs? Have tried Meera Sodha's recipe but it didn't really blow me away x

MelodiousThunk · 08/09/2023 17:17

If doing quick ramen, no. If doing 'proper' ramen, then yeah - I do the full shebang with dashi and tare and all the toppings: chashu, ramen eggs, nori etc. It's surprisingly fun.

A quick 'proper' ramen to do is tan tan ramen which uses minced pork, sesame paste and chili paste. It's amazing on a cold winter weekday evening.

EmmaEmerald · 08/09/2023 17:19

please recommend which ramen ti buy, I'm off the shops and now need a ramen dinner! Thank you.

Bobbybobbins · 08/09/2023 17:20

I like cooking up a nest of egg noodles then adding to miso soup with a range of extras, so yummy!

southlondoner02 · 08/09/2023 17:23

I buy a mixed bag of frozen beans (think it contains edamame, cannellini, kidney and runner) and put them in the boiling water for a few minutes first. Usually buy the ramen that comes with sesame oil as well as the soup base but if not add sesame oil and soy sauce

KnickerlessParsons · 08/09/2023 17:27

I add loads of stuff to my instant noodles. Anything out of the following:
Onions, courgettes, peanut butter, sesame oil, chilli, garlic, left over cold meat, salmon, sweetcorn, mange touts, cabbage, cherry tomatoes. Pretty much whatever is in the fridge.

CurlewKate · 08/09/2023 17:27

Depends. If I have time I add a ton of stuff- turns it into a full meal. Otherwise, just as it is.

CupOfCoffeePlease · 08/09/2023 17:28

I missed when everyone started calling them ramen.

I grew up calling them supernoodles or instant noodles!

StEtienne93 · 08/09/2023 17:34

Cooked egg or chicken.

HangingOver · 08/09/2023 17:40

I make the Morrisons own brand chicken flavour instant noodles and scoop then onto thickly buttered white bread but I'm a trash panda.

CaptainSeven · 08/09/2023 17:48

Always! Never eat it without adding fresh ingredients. Including but not limited to, boiled eggs, cold meat, tomatoes, spring onions. Mmm. Yummy.

DahliaMacNamara · 08/09/2023 17:55

Can't stand eggified noodles. Eggs aside, I throw the kitchen sink at them for a full meal, otherwise I chuck in some coriander and a dash of chilli sauce.

chipshopElvis · 08/09/2023 17:56

Yes! Boiled egg, spring onions. Sometimes other greens. Sometimes a bit of meat!

Viggooooh · 08/09/2023 17:57

Yes I sometimes add fresh veg. And when I have them in the freezer I usually cook a couple of gyoza (only takes 4 mins) and throw them in

Oioicaptain · 08/09/2023 18:00

Always add:
Steamed asparagus
Smoked tofu
Peppers
Spinach
Poached egg
Chilli flakes/oil
Fresh coriander

Wait, they are the same thing?

happysunr1se · 08/09/2023 18:11

The soy eggs I make are chinese recipe; lo soy dan which has star anise in it. My inlaws run a Chinese take away, they say the marinade liquor is never thrown away, it just gets boiled up and added to each time.

Perfect time for soft boiled eggs is 7 and 1/2mins and perfect marinade time is 24 hours.

We eat Nissen noodles, black garlic or sesame flavour. They are junk food though so I dont eat them too often.

I've been to the Nissin noodle museum in Osaka, the founder Momofuku Ando invented instant noodles. You can make your own pot noodle, you can make packet noodles from scratch in their show kitchen and the canteen has vending machines with rare pot noodle flavours.

@HangingOver My ds makes cold spaghetti bolognaise sandwiches on buttered white bread. If you want to come and claim your long lost child...
