Barcelona

BorgQueen · 04/09/2023 19:06

The Pyramids and Giza in general - it was 10 years ago so may have improved but it was a giant rubbish tip with the smaller pyramids being used as toilets for the hawkers/camel jockeys. I ended up covered in cat flea bites in a 5* hotel, we were only there 3 nights.
Hong Kong was a bit underwhelming.
I don’t know how people can be disappointed with New Zealand!
Auckland maybe but it (South Island especially) blew us away, where else can you go to Hobbiton or in a helicopter up a mountain and land on an 800ft thick glacier?

Santorini was Meh, not overly impressed and I HATED Athens.

grayhairdontcare · 04/09/2023 19:09

Santorini
Barcelona
Both hell on earth.

ZickZack · 04/09/2023 19:09

The multiple comparisons to Blackpool in this thread have made me laugh 😅

Dontcallmescarface · 04/09/2023 19:09

Cornwall.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 04/09/2023 19:10

San Francisco and Fiji -both about a decade ago.

To be fair Fiji isn’t the sort of place we’d usually be attracted to (don’t do beaches), but we were going to Australia for a few weeks and then visiting friends in NZ for a couple of days and thought it’d be a good stop off (it’s our equivalent of Spain for New Zealanders) as we knew we’d be unlikely to choose it as a holiday destination. Went somewhere recommended by NZ friends.

The ecological devastation of the island to make it a holiday destination was dreadful (e.g. removal of mangroves), although I understand that that’s now being addressed.

San Francisco OMG

In the car from the airport the driver (who still had vivid memories about how cold it was in Germany when he was in the army -having never seen snow before, or since 😆), told us where not to go, never go down an alleyway etc. and about the drugs problem and we thought he was exaggerating.

He wasn’t.

We were staying at the Four Seasons (in the CBD) and remember asking the concierge about going shopping with my youngest, then aged 8. He got the map out and, crossing off most of the city, said I don’t want you to go outside of this (v small) area. I took him at his word.

The streets were literally lined with people shooting up and passing out. The levels of deprivation in probably the wealthiest area in the world was absolutely hideous.

Georgyporky · 04/09/2023 19:12

Auckland. Family member lives there, so showed us the "best bits" & "good restaurants".

Yawn, yawn, fucketty yawn.

fitch568 · 04/09/2023 19:12

Paris.
Liked Dubai, Barbados & Rome
San Fran was disappointing
Cornwall - it was raining & entire country there eating out to help out, so that might be why!
Lake District.. Windermere & Beatrix Potter bit.. again, prob missed loads of the better bits.

Verite1 · 04/09/2023 19:12

Los Angeles and Cairo. But I can’t believe the number of people saying Rome and Barcelona - two of my favorite cities!

ididntwanttodoit · 04/09/2023 19:13

Agree with @MendedDrum . Las Vegas. The pits.

Pushkinini · 04/09/2023 19:13

New York. Was expecting to be wowed. I wasn't.

Pushkinini · 04/09/2023 19:14

Iamblossom · 04/09/2023 18:50

Bondi Beach

Here too. Very down at heel and a bit grimy.

explainthistomeplease · 04/09/2023 19:15

Las Vegas tacky? I thought that was the point of the place!

SoSad44 · 04/09/2023 19:15

New York - been there 7 times for work, would never ever again go if I don’t have to

AnxiousAmanda · 04/09/2023 19:15

Egypt, Tunisia, both total shitholes.

Ireland - also a shithole, especially Dublin.

GrammarPrivateDivide · 04/09/2023 19:16

Sydney…
over exceeded expectations - Liverpool

OvaHere · 04/09/2023 19:16

Paris

user1498572889 · 04/09/2023 19:16

Jay Wick 😂😂

imdoneitsover · 04/09/2023 19:16

Barbados (nice 15 years ago, not now) LA, Cairo

thistimelastweek · 04/09/2023 19:16

Another vote for Bondi Beach
And the Giant Causeway

explainthistomeplease · 04/09/2023 19:16

Oh yes I'll add Dublin to San Francisco. Rest of Ireland lovely, mind. But Dublin. Awful dull place

SoSad44 · 04/09/2023 19:17

Cornwall - it’s either windy, rainy, or cold or massively overcrowded when it’s sunny. Food is below average everywhere.
been far to often for family reasons, wont return.

DavinaTheDreadful · 04/09/2023 19:17

I think most places during peak travel times are a bit crap. I hate crowds though.

I love Cornwall out of season, but wouldn't go there on a hot day in August for example.

Anywhere with a theme park during school holidays is bound to be hell unless you love queuing in the heat.

I also hate waterparks anywhere.

My dream holiday is somewhere peaceful and serene but it's hard to find these days!
