Venice and Rome are incredible cities. Skye is a beautiful island.Cornwall is a stunning country. It's the number of tourists which make them uncomfortable to visit in peak season.

SoIinvictus · 04/09/2023 19:41

@suburbophobe yes, I'd agree that places change as a result of mass tourism. It becomes a double edged sword I suppose.

My friends the Venetians are always on TV (I'm in Italy) moaning about tourists. Unless they're moaning about them not coming of course!

I was in Dubrovnik in the 70s and was thinking of going back but I've heard that's just now a parody of itself. And Koh Samui mentioned upthread, went in 1991 just before The Beach mania hit and even then you could see that things were going to be changing drastically and very soon.

I loved Valencia. And the graffiti!

I actually can’t believe some of the comments I’ve read?! I think some people must surely be on a wind up. Someone said the whole of France another the whole or Ireland. Do you know how ridiculous that makes you sound. It’s embarrassing. By all means we have different things we look for in a holiday destination but to write off a whole country is an absolute nonsense.

I couldn't agree more! Some of these are so weird. Maybe the weather was rubbish or people had preconceived ideas about a place due to photoshopped pictures they'd seen..Or just did not do the place properly? E.g. if I had flown into Santorini i'd have felt entirely different about it but as it was we sailed in and it was magical!

Marrakech
Brussels
Malaysia

NaselHazel · 04/09/2023 19:44

Sydney.

I absolutely see how it’s a really lovely place to live and work - beaches, sunshine, the sea - but there is absolutely nothing to DO there as a visitor and it’s a pain to get around. You look at the view of the Harbour, Opera House and Bridge, have a tootle out to Manley on the ferry, pop to the beach and that’s that! Voila, you’ve done Sydney in a morning. The Opera House show was Mamma Mia….

I was there a few years ago and Sydneysiders talked about the restaurants which were fine, but not better than my home town.

Anywhere that’s boiling hot with creepy, pervy men that constantly harass you. Egypt, Tunisia (felt so so dangerous there.)

The Egyptian pyramids

suburbophobe · 04/09/2023 19:46

Cairo and the Pyramids.

I went. Fucking amazing time.

But then I travel solo and with my son who is biracial African so it's something else.

HoneyPotts · 04/09/2023 19:48

Blackpool.

SummerIsBack · 04/09/2023 19:49

I thought the pyramids were amazing, looking at the Spinx, listening to the prayer music in the background with the sand blowing around is one of my top 10 memories.

Comedycook · 04/09/2023 19:50

South of France.... horrible place unless you're very rich.

LyndaLaHughes · 04/09/2023 19:52

I'm glad to see it's not just me who can't stand Paris- most of it is dirty and disgusting.

I quite liked Rome, but I felt like this about Florence. When you've seen one painting you've seen them all.

I hated Florence as well.

Pisa though was great.

Stressed2023 · 04/09/2023 19:54

Morocco - specifically Rabat and Fez.

FettleOfKish · 04/09/2023 19:54

Rome, but largely because we went in July (invited to a wedding, not our choice of date) and it was hotter than the sun. I'm sure it's lovely when you can breathe, and step outdoors without being fully drenched in sweat.

LA. Only there a couple of days but saw nothing much to like about it.

Don't shoot me those who live there, but Manchester. Visited for the first time last year, have heard tons of brilliant things, but encountered several very angry shouty people (starting with our taxi driver from the station) and just felt a bit on edge all the time.

Sad about all these mentions of Bali, we're going there and to Singapore next month for the first time Sad

Tapasita · 04/09/2023 19:55

Paris also. It’s so overrated, expensive & full of thieves. Not romantic or enchanting & the Parisians make an art form out of being rude

RhymesWithTangerine · 04/09/2023 19:55

New York - I was so disappointed. The people are awful. The place is mean.

The Algarve - I had low expectations and it was worse.
