And I think southerners are generally more snobby about northern accents than the other way round (quite unjustifiably in my view, as some southern accents are awful and yes I know I am an accent snob too).

Not my experience at all. I'm a southerner living in the north and never heard southerners mention northern accents growing up, whereas northerners (particularly Yorkshire folk) never miss an opportunity to tell you that their way is right and everyone else is wrong.

It's not just southerners in Britain who use the long a in latte. I'm Australian, we tend to have fairly flat vowels, and I've never heard, or said, latte as anything other than lartte.

Pronounce latte however you like. Sure, it's an Italian word originally, but it's been adopted into English so pronounce it however works best for you and your accent.

If I go to the capital of France, I don't tell everyone I'm off to "Paree" with a gutteral "R".

If we're going to be pedantic about 'latte' then it means 'milk' in Italian and should never be used to order a coffee.

A lot of people don't like camping though. We have a converted campervan and I'm usually knackered when we get back as it's usually to a festival/meet up. I definitely don't think I've had a holiday when I get home.

Gin and Tonic has been my drink of choice for about 35 years, and I'll have none of this fancy schmancy mucked about with Gin thank you very much.

I like Friends a lot. It's hilarious but my unpopular opinion about it is that Ross was a great character and the Ross-Is-Like-SOOOO-Problematic-Revisionism needs to stop. It's a sitcom, not a moral lesson.
