Whether it’s personal or well known, which unsolved case makes your brain sound like dial up?

Also the coachway is a really odd place to leave someone in the small hours, there's very little activity at that time of night and it's further away from the police station than the main train station which has more transport availability late night taxis etc.

I'm from MK too - wtf, the Coachway? What a weird place to drop him?

It's the discovery of a foot in a shoe that sends shivers down my spine!

This one, hands down.

There was a BBC Scotland documentary about this recently, was interesting. She did seem to make up stories to her friends & family back home, about dating a famous rugby player for example who it was then shown had been in NZ for years before. Very mysterious, worth a watch.

@idontwanttoplayanymore I thought the police had gathered it was the Dad in the end? He was a convicted peadophile and alcoholic, he was found dead.

His dad was a convicted paedophile but wasn’t under suspicion of being involved in his disappearance. It’s still an open unsolved case, the local police were appealing for witnesses earlier in the year around the 20th anniversary, 3rd May. The same day Madeleine McCann disappeared four years later, it makes me sad that not many people have even heard of this little boys name.

Hi all! I reached out to HQ, and was advised that if enough people wanted this to become a topic on the site, to post so on The Site Stuff thread so it goes for review. I’ve created a thread for the creation of this new topic, so if you’re interested, pop on and say so!

New Topic Idea: Unsolved Mysteries | Mumsnet

Hello! I’ve been advised to post this here, but given the popularity of my unsolved mysteries thread, I figured it might be a good Topic to add to Mum...

Was that the one when they found a bike? I didn’t realise he’d never been found. We were on holiday in that area at that time.

Yes that’s it, his bike was found leaning up against the river wall. It was 20 years ago this year.

The river is definitely a good possibility, but those Midwestern farms are so vast (and much of the private land in the area was never searched), his remains probably wouldn't have been found.

I think a lot of missing people who vanished in rural or deeply forested areas in America probably got lost, died of natural causes, and their bodies are still undiscovered. Kyron Horman's school was located in the middle of a big, really dense forest which wasn't searched until that evening.

There are so many cases of bodies lying undiscovered for months or even years, even after being searched, and the US is just so massive and has such dense areas of wilderness, even farmlands (which of course isn't wilderness) are just so huge.

I found out something creepy the other day - in certain states in the US there's a law known as the purple paint law, where if you daub your fenceposts with a splotch of paint in a particular shade of purple, that means you do not tolerate trespassers, it's a legal declaration of your right to privacy and your right to enforce your right to privacy at all costs, and it's more or less a declaration that if you continue, you'll get shot and it'll be on you because you ignored the warning.

I think there's a huge US-UK cultural divide, in that we live on this tiny very crowded island with lots of green spaces but not vast amount of dense forest or wilderness (Scotland has the most wilderness but also has Right to Roam) so the way we conceptualise privacy is very different from the US which has so much space. And we have so many public footpaths, Right to Roam, etc. Go to any MN thread about farming or just rural life and posters will be complaining about tourists or random people walking on their land or entering fields, trying to stroke horses, etc. In Britain and lots of mainland Europe it's just the culture to sort of regard all rural land as being almost semi-public, regardless of the law. Whereas in rural parts of the US, you just grow up knowing never to step foot on someone else's land or unknown land without permission because a lot of people are insanely protective of their privacy and regard anyone stepping foot onto their property (even just to try to ring their doorbell) as a hostile act.

Large swathes of forested land where Maura Murray went missing have never been searched because the landowners wouldn't give permission, not necessarily because they have something to hide (they can't all have something to hide), but because rural New Hampshire where she vanished is just really infamous for being full of people who are intensely protective of their privacy and very strongly against any form of government interference, and wouldn't ever let police onto their property without a warrant as a point of principle.

That’s such an interesting insight into a major cultural difference between the UK/Europe and the USA.

Izzabellasasperella · 03/09/2023 20:00

Kris Kremers and Lisa Froon.

One thing that always puzzled me about this case is that neither girl wrote or sent a text to anyone. Sometimes my phone will not dial out but will send a text. In their situation it was worth a try.
Probably means nothing but it seems odd.

Andthereyougo · 03/09/2023 20:04

Ben Needham’s remains , and a shoe if I recall correctly, were found 30+ years after he went missing. A digger driver had knocked him over and killed him ( accidentally) The man buried Ben on the site he was preparing for house building and told someone ( friend is relative) on his deathbed nearly 30 years later. The friend waited quite awhile before going to the police.
His poor parents spent most of their lives searching for answers when they could have known on the day he wandered into the lane outside his gran’s house.

The absolutely horrific Clydach Murders - not an unsolved mystery as such as David George Morris was convicted of the murders not once but twice - however there is so much about the case that doesn't add up and there are a huge amount of people especially Swansea locals who do not believe he was guilty.

If it was a book or film or tv series you'd honestly think it was far-fetched.... also to be taken into account is that South Wales Police are the most corrupt force in the UK.

Oh my goodness this is absolutely horrific. I don't know how this crime escaped me. Have just gone down a rabbit hole and David Morris unfortunately died in prison fairly recently. Looks like he had nothing to do with it!

The Joshua Maddux case is bewildering.

Jerome Thomas went missing aged 15 on New Years Day 2001. He went for a walk and never came back. A weird detail is that the clothes he’d last been seen by his mum were found in the wash basket the next day. The case featured on Lorraine Kelly’s missing kids programme. The only place the clothes are mentioned is on the programme, it’s not in any other reports.

There were sightings of him hitchhiking and one in Portugal. It’s also been said he tried to contact his aunt in Crawley.

Kevin Hicks is another one. Went missing after going to the shop to buy eggs for a school cookery lesson. It wasn’t far from where Lee Boxell went missing. I believe there’s been evidence of grooming as he had a set of expensive stereo speakers that his parents hadn’t bought.

Gerry Largay - the lady walking the Appalachian Trail... She went into a bush to have a wee and ended up getting lost and was found years later. Never understood how on earth this tragic situation happened.

That was a tragedy but where's the mystery? The poor woman left the trail, got lost and died of starvation. She even left a diary explaining what had happened.

@LylaLee there is a ridiculous conspiracy theory that they don't have any kids and the kids you see in photos are hired actors... 😜

And the people who believe this are apparently adults and eligible to vote, now that is scary!

Quite a few women have gone missing in the east of Ireland over several decades. In some there are strong suspects but incompetence from the Gardai meant no convictions.

In others, it’s a total mystery:

  • Deirdre Jacob went to a village bank in Co Kildare to pay for her nursing accommodation in London and was never seen again; presume murdered
  • Jojo Dullard: hitchhiking to Wicklow and went missing on the final leg
  • Annie McCarrick: an American living in Dublin who went hiking and wnt missing, now presumed murdered.

I guess women go missing all the time and are murdered but Ireland is a small country where people tend to know everyone around. How these things happen and no-one knows anything is a mystery.

The Guards messed up on some of these cases.

For example, it was never proved that Annie McCarrick went on a bus to go hiking in the Wicklow Mountains. A witness said they thought they saw her and this moved the direction of the investigation in a particular direction. There was talk of Johnnie Foxes pub, etc.

But she had been in a difficult relationship - she had contacted friends in America to say she was unhappy and that he had been abusive towards her... These friends contacted the Guards after she went missing but their statements were never considered important.

She had been grocery shopping that morning - the shopping wasn't put away. It was a wet, drizzly day - not ideal for hiking? There are things about the case that are odd.

According to reports a small piece of a sandal and the toy digger he was playing with were found on a subsequent search of the site behind the house where he vanished from. U.K. police investigating believe he was killed and buried there as the informer despite not finding remains. Obviously unproven. But seems most likely

The case of Elisa Lam who was found dead in a water tank on a ship always freaked me out as well, especially the footage of her in the lift running from something 😳 so scary
This is the first thing l thought of, when l saw this thread. That's beyond weird.

saffy2 · 03/09/2023 20:25

I live in the town where Marion was last seen/heard from so periodically her daughter posts in local Fb groups and its heartwrenching.

She had bipolar disorder and had stopped taking her medication. She was having an episode, hence the erratic behaviour seen in the lift and which, sadly, led to her getting into the tank.

MartyMcFlysPurpleUnderwear · 03/09/2023 20:27

This has been mentioned several times in this thread but I am always baffled when Elisa Lam is brought up in threads like these. It’s clear to me when watching the alleged ‘creepy’ video of her in the elevator that she is manic. Which makes sense considering she had stopped taking her meds.

Isn’t the most logical explanation that she simply had a mental health episode and jumped in the tank herself?

This is a horrible case which began with the murder of Marian Bates who was shot while at work in the family jewellery shop, It involved a fair few of the criminals in Nottingham and triggered more violence . Somebody must know the fate and the whereabouts of James Brodie, the rumour was that after he was killed he was fed to pigs.

Police rule out human remains are those of James Brodie

Brodie has been missing since his alleged part in a fatal robbery in 2003

Is there a specific sub/topic on Mumsnet where people who like to discuss real life cases/mysteries/unsolved incidents can discuss them? Or does it just come under the Crime sub or The Unexplained?

If not then would it be worth/possible in future to have a topic specifically aimed at those who have a keen interest in these types of cases? Just a thought.

To OP! Yes I would absolutely like to see this become a topic. I’ve reposted my quote from my original post back on page 14 suggesting it.

That is my understanding of what happened to her, I've worked in mental health for years and have seen a fair few people in states of utter terror brought about by being extremely unwell.
